Jewel is messing with us

Warning here, peeps! Jewel has dropped the Healthy Choice Fresh Mixers from some/most of the preferred cards.  I just checked and I’ve lost a $2 and a $1 discount – only a $1 left on a single card.  And who knows how long that one will remain.  Considering I have 100 coupons ordered, yes, I’m majorly pissed about this.

If a store offers a discount through a certain date, it isn’t fair or honorable to yank it without notice.  Want our continued loyalty, Supervalu?  Show us some first, or it’s guerilla warfare time…

reJeweled

First of all a sidetrip to Hallmark (my first), where I have only one thing to say:  Keep the hell away from the Butter Almond Toffee.  you have now been warned but boy it’s goooood

Made it over to Jewel for the $2 HC card run.  Pictured is 7 HC mixers, 3 Eagle milk for the buy 10 deal, then 3 dozen eggs and a 2 lb bag of organic basmati brown rice to use up the overage.  I’m stocking up on the staples for the next week; basmati rice is great but pricey, so this is a great time to stock up those items you love, but hate to spend cash on!

Jewel – trip 1

I need to hit Jewel at 5 ’cause that’s 24 hrs after my last visit with this card! This one has the magic $2 off HC Mixers on it and we certainly don’t want to do anything to screw it up.  So stopped earlier and picked up two duplicate orders:  7 HC mixers and 3 Eagle condensed milks.  Total was high because I still have not received my coupons so only had the six .55 Eagle coupons.  With them I would have had an OOP of $3.07 all for the condensed milk, so that’s not bad. I’m pissed about the mail because they keep screwing with the route.  We’ve gone from one mailman every 7 or 8 years to increasing the size of the route, then having three mailmen in six months, then throwing substitutes into the mix.   Is it any wonder that the new mailmen confuse our street with ones with completely different names and locations? So yes, I’m pissed about it and I want my coupons!

Jewel

Still no sign of my coupons mailed early Wednesday (substitute mailman with 3 pieces of mail – grrrrr, dammit!  gimme my coupons!)

Basically, I just ran the deal with 7 HC mixers, one Eagle milk and two Marie Callender’s Steamers.  Since I will return with $7 in HC coupons, I needed something to use up the overage, so decided to pick up some meat tortellini for my son.  No coupons, no sales.  I tell you, my hands were shaking.   Total OOP was $9.27.  Subtract the $7 in HC coupons and we’re paying $2.27.  and i’m ok with that…

Jewel tripping (and a side trip to Wags)

Literally ran in and out of Wags (decided at last minute to pick up PITA at school and left with 5 minutes to spare) – got 12 more Snickers for .29 tax.  damned high tax!

Even though my 100 HC coupons haven’t yet arrived (mailed out Wed am), decided to pick up 7 for stockpile (remember – one less than limit), 3 Eagle milk (with .55/1 qs – to make up 10 items), two Ziplocs (with BOGO q) ’cause we’re out and these zoo plates for which we have no earthly use, but they’re purty.  Plus a small yogurt to use as starter for my homemade stuff.  Total OOP was $8.60 which was way high for me!  No clearance roasts (remember the use the BOGO store coupons this week).

Yee doggies! update

The Jewel ad starting the 9th is showing The Return of the Buy 10 get $5 off Instantly.  I have an aversion to this type of “discount” (see prior posts for my philosophy), but this one’s a killer.  In almost a exact repeat of the last dealio, the HC fresh mixers are once again going to be $1.99 after discount.  Here’s the killer part:  Check your Avenue cards (read prior posts about “other” cards), people; it’s showing up there as a limit 8, in varying amounts off ($1, 1.25, and my personal fav, $2).  So what does this mean, grasshopper?  Lots and lots of overage towards other stuff you might actually be forced to pay for otherwise.  i know, i know, it gets to me, too. Personally, I’d check out the clearance meat section – they’ve certainly been giving Dominick’s a run for their money (pssst, the Stockman & Dakota bottom roasts are BOGO).  If you used up all your $1 insert coupons from 10/24 S, Coupons by Dede (right sidebar) had about 1500 left with an .08 “handling charge” for each.   I’m looking to buy at least 50 from her, since I’ve got the mixers through the 13th on a couple of cards with a few more cards resetting at midnight.  Since these are products are shelf-stable, I won’t even have to play freezer tetris.  And most important?  The PITA loves them.  IF YOU HAVEN’T YET ORDERED YOUR COUPONS, DON’T WORRY.  BUY THE ITEMS AND RETURN WITHIN THE NEXT 60 DAYS WITH YOUR COUPONS TO GET YOUR CASH.  JEWEL ROCKS! Aahhh!  Almost forgot:  Do not use up the maximum limit showing on your Avenue card, usually 6 or 8.  If you do, it disappears forever.  Scary, huh?  Instead, buy one less and then wait 24 hours before buying more.  Example:  HC Fresh Mixers are $2.00, limit 8; buy 7 at one time and get the hell out of Dodge (with that card, anyway) for the next 24 hours.  Next day, you’ve got all 8 still showing.  it’s a miracle!

Another thing to note is that Pillsbury brownie mixes, cookie mixes and frostings tie in with the 11/7 rp for either .40 off frosting/brownie or .50 on cookie mixes.  So either .09 for brownies or .49 or .59 for the cookies and frosting.  For those of you with the Dominick’s Thanksgiving booklets, there are coupons for:  $1/1 Pam spray; $1/1 Hefty one zips or foam plates and probably other stuff, but I just can’t look any more.

If you see some match ups, please comment and let us know… In unity there is strength!

Jewel and Wags

Ran to Jewel with a friend (she wanted moral support ’cause she was bringing in receipts with coupons worth about $70!  So don’t think you can’t go back and save).  Nothing really special for me, but I did pick up some clearance skirt steak for about two bucks each.  The trick, obviously, is to get the smallest package with the largest dollar amount off.

Now…Wags.  Figured I get a few more of the Quaker Oats while it was still on sale.  Or rather, on sale, with a coupon and the Breathe Right MM!  Ran this deal three times:  two oatmeal and two Breathe Right.  Hand over the two $1 Quaker mfr coupons and the $1.50 Breathe Right mfr coupon.  Then hand over the Wags coupon reducing the Breathe Right from .99 to .49.  The way the Wags registers work is that you use one coupon less than the number you are purchasing, otherwise the damned thing beeps and game over.  By buying the 2, you are “paying” .99 each (or 1.98) and the $1.50 mfr coupon goes in like Flynn.

Using my method means you only get .52 overage, but it goes through smoothly – worth it to me.  Each order came to $2.64 with $2 back in RRs.

Save a little, spend a lot

Tonight’s lecture is on the folly of chasing deals.  I am holding Meijer rain checks for 24 Smart Balance milks at $1.99/each; I currently have six coupons.  My question is:  Do I drive to Bolingbrook and see if they’re in stock and if so, do they even have 6?  Let’s assume (not a good idea with Meijer) that the milk is in stock and I can get all six using my $2 coupons – so free milk!  But is it?  Toll charges are $1 and the trip will require a minimum of one hour driving and shopping.  Now I can drive a mile to Jewel, where the SB milk is $2.49 and pay (gasp!) .49 for each of the six milks and be back home in a matter of minutes, or save the $3 and hit Meijer… guess what I did (hint:  got more stamps).

You may counter that there are other deals to be had this week at Meijer, but frankly, free pet treats doesn’t justify the trip.  Maybe next week…

Jewel today $2.35

Just got back from a scouting trip to Jewel, searching for the best way to use that $20 store cat (from gc deal).  Here’s what I found:  cheap meat (woo hoo)!  Took the $4 off ones, then spotted the $5/25 coupon on Stockman & Dakota meat in the “Holiday Joy Made Easy” booklets by the front door, so off to grab more.  You’re looking at:  7 packages of steaks, mostly Delmonicos; 2 18-ct cartons of large eggs; 2 cans of Hills Bros. cappuccino mix ($3.99 mark down).   Subtotal was $78+ then the fun started…2 $4 wts on coffee; each steak was marked with a $4 or $3 clearance sticker; $5/25 Stockman & Dakota coupon; $20 store cat; finally $15 in RRs, which left me paying $2.35 OOP.  Since I only “paid” about $6.50 for that $15 in RRs, the correct way to account for this would be an OOP of slightly less than $8.  I like my $2.35 figure more…

Jewel OOP .02

Stopped by Jewel to see if they had any clearance meat anything I could use with that $20 store cat (from the gift card deal) – not much.  Actually, I was amazed at the long dates on the meat:  12/06/10?  Just how old is this stuff?  I  found a few store cats, so the $3.99 cookies were free ($4 off on bakery cookies), the cabbage and bananas ($2 off on produce) came to slightly over $2 and I used a $2 rr from the Quaker Oats deal.  Have a bunch of polish sausage in the freezer, lots of potatoes and onions and  cabbage now completes tomorrow night’s dinner.  meal-planning is so exhausting…
