Jewel – giving away the store day!

Saw a post on CW yesterday that the large bags of Kibbles ‘n Bits were ringing up at $3!  Finally dragged my fat can over there a short while ago, certain I was doomed to disappointment, but yes, in fact they scanned at $3 so I took the last 12 bags on the shelf.  Wanted to put in a special order for 100 bags, but that wasn’t gonna happen…  I’ll return with the $1.50 coupons from the 8/28 and 9/25 rp.

In the same transaction was 12 Bounty single rolls marked .50 on the clearance rack.  I’ll return with the .25 coupon from the 10/16 P&G to bring the cost down to a quarter each.  I included one of the Buy 10 get $5 off transactions:  8 Pillsbury Sweet Moments and 2 Simply chocolate chip cookies.  Note that the chubs don’t contain real chocolate chips (the words Hershey’s cocoa are prominently displayed to throw us off).  Paid with a $4/40; .75/2 for the cookies; 8 $1 on the Sweet Moments, the $5/25 Jewel email coupon, a $5 when you buy 10 GM/Pillsbury products at SuperValu coupon and the instant $5 savings that came off.  Total OOP was $42.39.  I’ll return with my coupons and get back $3 for the Bounty and $18 for the dog food, which will bring my OOP down to $21.39, of which $3.24 is tax.

Second transaction was for 8 Pillsbury sweet rolls and two Simply chocolate cookies (for the instant $5) and a 2L of Dr. Pepper Ten because I was .65 under the $25 threshold for the other coupons.  I used all applicable coupons, so my total is final.  Eight .30 coupons for the sweet rolls and one .75/2 on the cookies, plus the free Dr. Pepper coupon.  A $5/25 Jewel email coupon, the $5 when you buy 10 participating products at Supervalu coupon and the instant $5 off resulted in an OOP of $6.39.  Tax was only .19.

All the News that fits…

How about the weirdest laws on the globe, courtesy of International Business Times:

1.  In Samoa, it’s considered a crime to forget your wife’s birthday. well, i see nothing weird about that…

2.  In Paraguay, pistol dueling is legal as long as both parties are registered blood donors.

3.  In Australia, only licensed electricians may change a light bulb — failing to do so can result in a $10 fine.  So all you Chicago union-bashers can just stfu!

4.  In the United Kingdom, a pregnant woman can legally relieve herself anywhere she wants – even, if she so requests, in a policeman’s helmet. Yet it is illegal for a lady to eat chocolates in public transportation.  and they know this how?

5.  In France, it is against the law to sell dolls that do not have human faces. ???

6.  In Singapore, walking around your home nude can result in a $2,000 fine if caught or three months in prison. And it’s illegal to chew gum.  the gum part i already knew, but  what if you chew gum at home in the nude?

7.  In Italy, anyone considered “obese” is forbidden from wearing polyester. While in Capri, a ban on “noisy footwear” means you can get arrested for wearing flip flops.  i really can’t argue with the first part…although i’d also tack on corduroy

8.  In Switzerland, clothes may not be hung to dry and you cannot wash your car on a Sunday. It is also considered an offense to mow your lawn on a Sunday, because it causes too much noise.  sounds like they have a pretty stiff homeowners association

All the news that fits…would you like fries with that?

Christina shops Wags for gum & eye candy

I’ve posted before some of the trials and tribulations of Christina – remember she of the no water?  Here’s her latest…

So, I had to share my gum experience and such… When I went on Friday, I had previewed my Wags ad and didn’t see much for this week, so I decided to burn some of the RR. I ‘needed’ a few things and some gum, of course. And, of course, you know this story is always going to be longer, because, well… it’s me!

I assume you guys got some weather on Thursday night, as I think we run a little similar in weather patterns. We had lots of places without power. Wags had a outage problem and they spent 2 hours reprogramming the computers. Then, I came in. I got my goodies and watched the register tick down. I had given 15 year old money for coffee, since school had a delay as well, and so I just grabbed my debit card for my $1.52 purchase. When I swiped it, I took the system back down.   Mind you, it has taken awhile to run ALL those coupons.  I know you know what I mean. She looks at me and I look at her and we burst out laughing.  There is no way I am going to make her rerun all this manually to pay with cash.  We decide I will come back later and grab my stuff.   It turns out the sale did ring all the way thru and I only needed to hand over my coupons. Bonus, as Hubs and I were both there and he may have just fallen over if he had to stand there and watch a ringing up of that magnitude. He is male and while patient, he is male.

Needless to say they are all getting to know me there.  The one manager (assistant???) that is a supreme asshole is gone, I believe. He has issues and has no business in management or perhaps even working with the general public. (Especially in the snooty area I live in. They eat you alive out here!) I won’t even deal with him, because he is so condescending. I have witnessed him arguing with so many customers.  On the flip side, the other managers are all awesome! I’ve never cleared a shelf (Minus the ‘Fruity Pepples’ for camping, back in the spring, and I spread the wealth around and covered all of them! And they didn’t ‘know’ me yet either.) So, that great news is that the manager that’s helped me the most lately, is so HOT!  Seriously!  It is making Wags my favorite store all over again! I happened upon another 32 of the coupons for gum and went last evening. He rang it thru and I gotta tell ya… HE made getting FREE gum sheer joy! He has figured out I am not paying for much or he is paying ME to take stuff off his hands.  He is the first one that seems to get it, yet he sees the value in his sales too. And did I mention that he is hot?! Skippity do dah!

Now that I have this huge patch of grass that’s currently dirt, I plan on building a friendly little graveyard on the side of the house. The neighbors aleady know we are batshit crazy and ran a bout with waterlessness, so they shouldn’t even bat an eye at this.  It IS Halloween soon, so this is good clean family fun!  (At least for our family…) The heads are currently being stipped of paint.  Giggle, giggle… I am sure some photos of the progress shall abound!

and we look forward to those photos….

Organic Girl produce

I could have sworn I posted about the Organic Girl $2 pdf coupon for use on their triple-washed line of lettuce blends.  The only place I knew that sold it was those new Walgreens.  However, I just had lunch at Zest Cafe in The Lemon Tree Grocer in Downers Grove and found they are having a 25% off produce sale (will probably continue to at least early next week, but call first).  Well, there they were, all varieties of the Organic Girl clamshell lettuce, marked $3.49 on the shelf, but after the 25% discount and a $2 coupon (I had two in my bag), I was able to score these for about .62 each.  Yes, that’s right, 5 oz. packages of organic lettuce blends for that insane price.

Between the organic juice and now the lettuce, I’m starting to eat really healthy – good thing my case of Crunch ‘N Munch from Amazon came today…

Waitress scams bad tippers

By Marcie Geffner · Bankrate.com

Three people have been arrested as part of an investigation into allegations of credit card skimming at a local restaurant in New Port Richey, Fla.

According to a press statement, the Pasco County sheriff’s office has charged a waitress at a Mugs ‘N Jugs with criminal use of personal identification information, and charged several of the waitress’ known associates with scheming to defraud, possession of a card scanning device and fraudulent use of credit cards.

The waitress allegedly used a hand-sized electronic skimming device to scan customers’ credit cards without their knowledge or consent. She then, according to the allegations, gave the information to an associate, who allegedly obtained additional personal financial information and account numbers and manufactured fake credit cards. Other associates then allegedly used the fake cards to make purchases at local retailers. The goods were later sold for cash, according to local news reports.

The alleged scam appears to have been relatively prosaic and petty, at least in the colloquial sense, as so far only nine people have reported losses totaling just $5,753. That’s not to suggest that hundred- or thousand-dollar losses are insignificant to the victims, but rather that major financial crimes can involve millions of dollars or more.

Still, the small scam is noteworthy for one peculiar aspect:  According to news reports, the waitress allegedly targeted customers who made her work too hard at the restaurant or who, in her opinion, didn’t tip generously enough. [emphasis mine] That’s a cautionary tale for restaurant diners and a good reminder to practice safe credit card habits:

Cops: Woman, son went out for pizza after letting relative die

Associated Press10:15 a.m. CDT, September 7, 2011

A woman and her son are accused of refusing to help their 70-year-old relative after she fell on the floor, and police say the pair went out for pizza when she died two days later instead of calling authorities.

Mary Coleman died in May of 2009, but charges were not filed in the case until Tuesday. Coleman’s 71-year-old sister, Veronica King of Madison, Wis. and her 45-year-old nephew, Steven King, are charged with first-degree reckless homicide and hiding a corpse.

The Wisconsin State Journal reports that Steven and Veronica King told police Coleman fell in a bedroom on May 7, then lay there, talking now and then, until her death.

“I told her quite frankly to shut up because that old woman in the backyard” would call the police, Steven King told police, according to a criminal complaint.

After Coleman died, King and her son didn’t call to have her body removed “because we had other things to do that day,” the complaint states. [emphasis mine]

The two kept the death a secret, hiding her body in the basement and then the garage until Madison police found her mummified remains more than three months later, according to the complaint.

In the meantime, Veronica King withdrew cash and wrote checks from Coleman’s bank account, where Coleman’s pension and Social Security payments were automatically deposited, authorities said.

Jewel and Free $$$ – update – dead

You’ll be pleased to know that the Lisle Jewel not only went through every VISA card in stock (under $100s are still hanging there – pah), they pulled out a box of variable amount ones, then realized that these had never been intended for sale at Jewel at all!  See?  If you guys hadn’t helped clean out stock for them, more stuff would just be sitting around taking up space.  Seriously, though, people drove in from miles around – seriously far distances, but as I told one person, this is a job and you are commuting to this job. The fact that you are getting paid $500 an hour for a job you do standing up and fully dressed is a bonus!
While the deal is still “officially” running, check Lisle off the list of participating stores.  They have now printed out and posted the Jewel policy on gift card purchases and decided that the debit cards we were buying are considered gift cards.  In point of fact, this is really a non-issue, because the only cards they have left are the variable Amex ones and $25 and $50 VISA.  And while you could use the Amex ones, you’d have to wait a few hours after activation before the funds were actually available…which would make for a very slow and painful deal scenario.
