No jokes about the name…but it still kills me.  Anyway, I just noticed these new freebies on my cards:  Chi Chi or La Victoria salsa AND a packet of Old El Paso Tortilla Stuffers.  Probably will hit them up tomorrow for the Sara Lee deli at $3.99, which I’ll bring down with the $1 Sara Lee coupons from 10/2 S it’s Red Plum (note to self:  ignore Rachel’s bad info) – which Rachel reminded me about.  Hey, the stuff is good and it’s only a buck for each half pound they slice.  Got lots?  Dehydrate it!

Hawaii Couple’s Daughter Taken Away for 18 Hours After Alleged Sandwich Theft

A Hawaii couple’s 3-year-old daughter was taken away from them for 18 hours after they were arrested for forgetting to a pay for two $5 sandwiches.

“This is unreal this could happen to a family like ours,” Nicole Leszczynski told Hawaii’s KHON.

The outing-turned-nightmare happened Wednesday while the family was shopping at a local Safeway.

“We walked a long way to the grocery store and I was feeling faint, dizzy, like I needed to eat something so we decided to pick up some sandwiches and eat them while we were shopping,” Leszczynski told the news station.

Leszczynski, who is 30-weeks pregnant, her husband, Marcin, and daughter Zophia bought $50 worth of groceries — but forgot about their two chicken salad sandwiches.

“It was a complete distraction, distracted parent moment,” Leszczynski told KHON.

As the family left, they were stopped by store security, who asked for their receipt.

“I offered to pay, we had the cash. We just bought the groceries,” Leszczynski told the station.

Instead, the expectant mother told KHON that the Safeway manager called police. They were taken to the main Honolulu police station where they were booked for fourth degree theft. Then Zophia was taken into custody by Child Protective Services.

“When they notified us that they would have to take her because we both would be arrested, I just couldn’t believe it, couldn’t believe this was happening, because I forgot to pay for the sandwich and that she’s never been away from us this long,” Leszczynski told KHON.

CPS told Hawaii News Now the department takes a child when both parents are arrested.

Zophia’s mom said she spent a sleepless night worrying about her daughter and shared the ordeal on the parenting website www.babycenter.com. Her post grabbed the attention of hundreds of outraged moms and dads.

“We didn’t know where our daughter was, didn’t know what the situation was, she didn’t have any clothes they just took her right from the grocery store,” Leszczynski told KOHN.

Zophia was returned to her parents 18-hours later.

Safeway Management issued this statement: “Safeway is aware of the incident and is working closely with the appropriate law enforcement authorities. The incident is under review but until the investigation is finalized it would be premature to comment.”

A day later, Safeway issued an additional statement, saying that there may have been a mistake.

“It appears we may not have handled this matter in the best possible way and we are taking the situation seriously,” the store said.

The couple says the never intended to steal the sandwich, and that they plan to argue against the charges when they appear in court in November.

“I hope no one else has to go through this,” Leszczynski said.

Update Note:  Just watched the interview with the mother who says that only one $5 sandwich was involved, not two.  So instead of them serving customers, Safeway prefers the customers serve (time).

Since they’re pissing me off right now with the peanut butter switcheroo, how’s about some Dominicks coupons?  The spinach is on sale 10/$10 so two bags per coupon.  The coupons should scan without beeping (depending on your printer setting, of course).

Wanted to pick up a few 1/2 gallons of Lucerne milk along with the free grinders and .99 eggs.  Naturally, the grinders did not come off.  When they asked if I had added them to the card…well, let’s just say I wonder about the mental agility of the average Dominicks shopper.  So each two-pack of milk had to be rung up separately because it’s unlimited transactions, but only two per transaction.  Used two cards to get two free grinders (oh, like you guys don’t have more than one card).  Total for the 10 half-gallons, two 18-ct eggs and two grinders was slightly over $12.  Life is good.

I happen to love these things – my ass can attest to that.  Domincks has that $5/$15 coupon on frozen foods, they are on sale for $3.99 each and there is a store coupon in last Thursday’s ad making them $2.99 each.  So running the math:  $3.99 x 4 = $15.96 minus $5, minus $4 (in-ad coupon), minus $6 ($1.50/1 8/21 S) and you’re left with .96 plus low tax. The two diet Cokes were free on my J4U.

And now you’re saved enough money to afford another freezer to house your collection of Hot Pockets, Totino pizza rolls and Taquitos.

I had a rain check for the .99 dish soap, a rain check for the $5.99 powder detergent and another rain check giving me $3 off of every three Gain products purchased (that instant $3 from the sale).  Since they still had not received any of the Gain powder, the manager suggested I substitute, so I took the three HE liquids pictured here.  Total OOP (after coupons and HIGH tax) was $8.43.  This was at the Woodridge Dominicks, which is a very nicely-run store – for me, anyway, so don’t start in with your bitchin’ and whining.
