Jewel II – $1.01 gasp!

Sometimes you just have to spend some $$$.  Or in this case $.  Wanted to check out another Jewel’s cheap meat section (and no, they haven’t installed a wine bar), but nothing cheap enough for me. Ended up getting one more pork chop and these two vitamin B-6.  I found both the Red Box cat and a $3.50 cat on any Equaline vitamins or mineral supplements and noticed that these were BOGO at $4.49.

Keep your eyes peeled for the BOGO Mentos coupon (I found mine on a tearpad by the register), since they go BOGO frequently and the exp. date is 12/31/2011 (!).

Jewel, carnivore special $.73

Read about this on CW, so thought I’d check it out.  The boneless pork chops are on sale for $.99 each (or $2.49/lb).  Right on the butcher counter there are Go Hog Wild! booklets that contain $1 on fresh pork.  Hmmmmm!  So I tested it out a couple of ways:  each pork chop individually wrapped for .99 and 2 pork chops at $1.98/package.  Then I saw that there was a BOGO coupon for Stockman & Dakota beef products, which seemed to line up nicely with the beef in the new clearance meat section.

To recap: 12 boneless pork chops and 4 eye of round steaks, plus the rolls for the Papa Charlie’s Italian beef (which we’ve been devouring like flesh-eating ghouls), worked out to be less than a buck.

and I got my pot stamp…

Save those receipts!

A reminder to always save your grocery receipts  – especially when you’ve got a bunch of them from cat deals.  Since Jewel takes coupons after the fact, you never know when there will be a new coupon out there or a friend will give you an insert.

There is another Con Agra rebate form out there for purchases made between 10/12 and 1/02/11, which happens to include the last Jewel Con Agra cat deal!  Click here to print out the rebate form.  I’ve used these in the past, where they say receipts from a supercenter (Wal Mart), but have gotten the booklets using Jewel receipts.  In this case, a $5 Wal Mart gc will come in handy for paying high tax on all your free stuff!   credit to OP on CW (which linked from another site…)

Papa Charlie’s beef – update

NOTE:  Don’t forget that the $12.99 sale price at Jewel ends Sunday, 10/24.  If they don’t have any in stock, make sure you get a rain check for however many you can cram in your freezer.  The printables expire 10/31.

As I mentioned in an earlier post, registering with the fine folks (open for pay-offs here, peeps) at Papa Charlie’s would get you a pdf coupon for $5 off the 5 lb tub of Italian beef.  People who registered earlier also got a BOGO pdf coupon and there were rumors that the manufacturer would be sending out another one.  Nothing new has turned up, so, as promised, here is my gift to you:  Papa Charlies BOGO coupon.  Make certain that you register before you use this coupon since Papa Charlie’s has said that if considerably more coupons are redeemed than actual people registered, they will yank them all (and, obviously, make changes to future coupons).  Hurry to Jewel where the 5 lb tubs are on sale through 10/24 for $12.99, which gives you 10 lbs for $7.99 ($12.99 x 2 less BOGO q less $5).

This is seriously good Italian beef, folks.  While not as good as my homemade (clap, clap, clap), you can add a little bit of olive oil and a dash of hot sauce (free Franks) and it’s now become your own!

Side note:  Jewel coupon policy allows redemption of printables up to and including $5; a BOGO printable is allowed, even if it’s for more, since you are required to purchase one item to get the second (it’s not “FREE”).  now to play freezer tetris with the GG…

Jewel GM update

Ran over to check out the new prices – forget the multigrain Cheerios; they’ve gone crazy-price!  The best deals I can see are still the BC baking stuff.  I decided to “splurge” and pick up a few more….ok, maybe more than a few…ok, it’s 7 and 4, so get off my back!

Picked up 7 of the regular brownie mixes and 4 of the frosting tubs.  Total was $13.23 so I paid with $13 in cats from a prior transaction (two $5 and one $3).  Paid .23 in tax and got back my $13.  Last night there was NO brownie mix to be found – today there’s tons.  So run and get your holiday baking stuff for free.  Oh,  and ps, they had the Pompeian olive oil on sale for $5.99! hahahahahahahah

On an odd note, while I was standing next to the BC frosting, a Jewel brand fell off the top shelf and clopped me in the head and yes the can got dented, smartass.  If this is Jewel’s new way to attract people to their house brands, it ain’t gonna work, peeps. Oh, and another weird thing:  I got a cat for a product for mouth sores, which just must be a commentary on buying so much crap!

GM cat still working at Jewel!

CW reports that the GM catalina is still printing as of this morning – based on past experience, if it works in the am, it’ll last all day (Con Agra deal was the same).  Unfortunately, many of the prices have changed (Progresso is now $1.50 preferred), so double-check the shelf tags before you start ringing.

One thing still at the old price is the $1 brownie mix.  I know most stores sold out of this, so if your store restocked overnight, hit ’em hard and fast.  This is the regular box, not the deluxe.  Buy 11, pay a buck.  If you want frosting with this mix, pick up 4 frosting and 7 mixes, pay $13 get back $13 (a double dip here).  If you want the deluxe mixes, take 6 and add  4 frosting to get back the $13.  (Note that this one will be $5 OOP, still a great deal).

Jewel last call

OK, we’ve had Con Agra and GM, but where, oh, where has my Unilever gone?

Decided to hit Jewel just one more time…since I cleared out the Papa Charlie’s beef over the week-end (and hey!  it is really good.  just added a little bit of oil for “mouth feel” and nothing else) I can fit in more GG.  just maybe not 39 boxes more…  Also picked up another few boxes of brownie mix (11 constitutes a few, doesn’t it?).  Actually, the bananas cost me more than anything else!  .79/lb.  Total OOP for GM stuff was $3.68; add another couple of bucks for the dumb ole bananas.

No multigrain Cheerios, so didn’t run cereal.  Using the coupons I had, the CTC would have run me about .40 cents a box, which, as we all know, is highway robbery!  I mean, I’m not rich…

New coupon scrutiny

If any of you are thinking that cashiers at Jewel have started paying more attention to what coupons you are using and on which products, you are right.  There has been a lot of discussion on the boards about this and here is a response from Jewel on this issue (grateful thanks to Barb at CW):

[are these printables we’re talking about?]  Not necessarily—there are some pretty crafty individuals out there that have manufactured their own hard copy coupons—not printables. That is why it has become so cumbersome for our poor cashiers. There are so many more steps involved in the transaction process now because we have been burned sooooo many times.

You can share with your readers that although it may seem as though the checkout process is taking longer than expected, please be patient with the cashiers, as they are simply doing their job to protect the company from those few people that have tried to cheat the business by presenting fraudulent coupons. Due to advancements in technology, we have learned that these new fake coupons do not beep, and therefore our checkers require a little intervention prior to scanning every coupon without question. In order to continue to pass along deals, savings and promos to our shoppers, we need to have the means to achieve that—which means more careful checkout procedures. We have not changed anything in our coupon policy, but need to ensure that the coupons that we are accepting are fitting those criteria in our stated policy to a T.

Of course, I prefer this Trib article.  Note the last paragraphs and imagine bin Laden sitting in a cave clipping coupons.  And how the hell could they even get home delivery? And what paper has the high value coupons?  so many questions…

Jewel/Osco parent posts loss – again!

I meant to post this yesterday (when the info came out) but internet kept fluctuating.  AT&T can’t figure it out and they’ve been replacing everything like crazy (great, great, great service – try getting that from Comcrap).  Anywho, here’s the wire on the story, clipped from the Trib:

Jewel-Osco parent Supervalu says it had a steep loss of $1.47 billion in the fiscal second quarter due to charges tied to a labor dispute at its Shaw’s chain and employee-related costs. Adjusted to exclude the charges, earnings totaled $59 million, or 28 cents per share. That is a penny shy of the 29 cents a share analysts expected.

Revenue fell 9 percent to $8.66 billion. Analysts predicted $8.74 billion.

Supervalu Inc., based in Eden Prairie, Minn., also lowered its full-year earnings expectations. It now expects adjusted fiscal 2011 earnings of $1.40 to $1.60 per share, from prior guidance of $1.75 to $1.95. Analysts expect $1.69 per share.

The company’s shares fell 4 percent in premarket trading.

Supervalu, one of the weaker grocers going into the recession, has struggled with intense competition and finding the balance between customers’ need for low prices and fluctuating food costs.

My Note:  This 2nd quarter loss comes after the 40% fiasco otherwise known as the 1st quarter.  Just how much money do they have to throw at that Wal-Mart ex-CEO before he gets the boot?  Jewel is turning into the Cubs of the grocery world!  Any thoughts or comments on things they could be doing differently?  I mean besides dumping the new guy and getting rid of that crappy “value” line.  fake cheese….

Jewel

OK, this is freaky.  I posted this Jewel entry just after the Wags one.  Went to Dominicks and when I return it’s vanished!  So I have to remember all this stuff now.  clear out my brainbox of all the vampires and werewolves and fill it back up with dealios.  concentrate, concentrate, concentrate…I ran three transactions, but one was the GG vegetables, so no picture ’cause it’s boring.  First transaction was for 6 BC brownie mixes and 4 frosting cans.  Total was $18.32; paid with 3 $5 GM cats and change – got back $13 in cats (there’s a double dip working).  Second transaction was for 8 BC muffin mixes, assorted flavors.  Used 8 .50 coupons from the latest GM insert and $10 in GM cats; got back $10, so OOP was $2.28.

I know I’m spending lots of money here, but brownies are great comfort food and the muffins will be made into coffee cakes throughout the winter (so will probably pick up a few more boxes before Thursday).
