Walgreens rolls out the new rewards card

R I P

I’ve held up this post for two reasons:  1) Didn’t want to post and have corporate come down on any of the usual suspects (it’s becoming a very stressful place to work) and 2) I kept hoping the powers that be would get their heads out of their…well, you know the rest.

Coupons, Deals and More did a post a few days ago, which explains in more detail about how the rewards card doesn’t, but here’s my take on it.

If you go into a Walgreens store after the program has been running a few weeks and you don’t have a card you will be asked if you want a card.  Say no and cashier will call the manager to help you.  While the manager has the ability to mark down the price to reflect the cardholder price, in reality no manager wants to be written up for adjusting prices too often – red flag time!  So a customer either drinks the Kool-aid or gets a card or gets out of Dodge – no other options.

I’ve stopped in quite a few Walgreens over this week and seen lots of Scope on the shelves  – employees weren’t even aware that there was a promotion paired with a BOG1 50% sale with coupons!  A far cry from even six months ago.

My suggestion?   A name change to Walgreens Bait & Tackle Shoppe, ’cause pretty soon the aisles will just be full of crickets.

Wags and Jewel (with RRs!!!)

I was in no hurry to pick up more mouthwash, even free or almost-free, but a reader ran this deal yesterday with no problems – today it didn’t work.  So the question was:  Is this deal still working and she just experienced a hiccup or did they somehow kill the deal?

Buy two Scope mouthwashes and get a $3 RR.  The pictured bottles are also part of a monthly B1G50% deal (tags are under the RR shelf tags).  Use two 75¢ coupons from  the 7/29 P&G and, depending on what registers you have, you will either pay zero or 24¢ (50% off the lower-priced bottle) and high tax.   Ran the deal 6 times and got 12 bottles of mouthwash and six $3 RRs.  the things i do for my readers…

The great part:  These RRs do not state “redeemable only at Walgreens.”  My guess is Wags lost the pissing match with P&G.  I headed over to Jewel and bought some frozen EE ravioli for $3.29, used a $3 RR and paid .35 in cash.  If you are unsure of your Jewel’s acceptance, please print out the Jewel-Osco Coupon Policy Summer 2012 and carry it with you.  They’ll probably be happy for clarification.

BIC pens for FREE

I’ve checked a couple of Walgreens with no Bic pen stock and from what I’ve been hearing, it’s the same thing with you guys, too – pens on sale at Walgreens which would be free with the Bic mfr coupon, but no stock.

clean floor, no dogs = reader's house

One reader did what I always advise you to do:  price match at Walmart.  Trying to stock up on Rose Art crayons or markers for donations and are stymied by Target’s 4-like coupon policy or just plain can’t find a Walgreens with stock, head on over.

IPs expiring – print now!

Don’t forget that many, many of the IPs either disappear or reset the first of every month.  If you haven’t yet printed the $1 coupon on any Carmex 4 oz or larger for the 8/5 Wags deal, print as many coupons as you have computers!  It’s under the personal care tab.  If it resets, you get doubles!!!

Click here to print out the $1/3 RoseArtI coupons for free school supplies at Target.  This is on red plum (under drug stores).  Again, if this resets, you’ll get six more free items!

$1

Walgreens 8/5 – update w/ $1 IP – print now!!!

Coupons.com has a new $1 coupon on any Carmex 4 oz or larger.  Print as many coupons as you have computers!  It’s under the personal care tab.

They actually have a few FARR deals this week!  No coupons for any of them, but sometimes the coupons only screw up the roll, kwim?

First FARR is for the 20oz bottles of Lipton Naturals iced tea with lemon:  99¢ and get back a 99¢ RR.  Although the other flavors are all showing for 99¢, the lemon is the only one pictured for the RR (so we’ll see, but doesn’t change our patterns any).
W Perfection 8 ct tampon:  $1.50 with a $1.50 RR.

Now it gets interesting…

The Renew Life 3 Day Diet Cleanse (2 oz) 6 count is $10 with a $10 RR.
The 3.5 Lanacane spray with aloe is $6 with a $6 RR.
Carmex skin care 5.5 oz healing lotion or 4 oz cream is $4.99 with a $4 RR

Right now I’m really tired (stupid authors write too well – must sue), but I could see buying the Lipton with the Cleanse for $10.99, then getting back $10.99, which you use to pick up the Lanacane and Carmex for $10.99.  You’d only get back $10 RR on that second transaction.

RIght now it’s just a simple roll back between those two transactions:  You will pay out .99 every other transaction (plus tax), but you will get the Lipton tea (which is very good) plus all the products you can stuff in your trunk.

CVS for freebies

The Magic Coupon Machine today started spitting out $1/2 Mars candy bars, which ties in nicely with the 2/$1 sale on Snickers (my favorite)!  Every card is getting this sweet deal, folks!

In today’s Smart Source there is a $2 off any Stayfree product.  While I know the Chicago Tribune insert got the coupon, some of the smaller papers did not.  It might be worth buying a few coupons for stock up purposes.

Wags has these on sale for $1.99, CVS has an assortment of them for $2 and RiteAid has a $3 deal where you get a $1+ Up back.  Don’t forget that you can always price match at Walmart, too, if your store(s) don’t have sufficient stock.

Today’s Smart Source (all papers) has a $2 off any Organix body wash or hair product – check your drug stores for clearance products because I’ve been seeing lots of Organix at 50% off.  CVS has a Spend $10 and get $5 ecbs, but unfortunately Organix is higher than $5 and less than $10.  Cheapest deal would be two of the $6.99 shampoos or conditioners, use the two $2 coupons to pay, after ecbs, about the same as the 50% off clearance prices!  It’s your call, but this is a really good shampoo/conditioner line – the smell from the coconut one makes me hungry for Mounds bars.

FYI on RRs

Heads up that not all RRs are printing with the dreaded “Redeemable ONLY” wording.  The Crest Vivid 3D toothbrush $4 RR (BOGO 50% off) did not have the language, which means you can use it at Jewel!  Happy times!  You really shouldn’t have any trouble using it because all the signs at the registers say that it’s the ONLY worded coupons that will no longer be accepted.  Let’s hope we see more of these RRs in the few months before Wags implodes.

Walgreens rewards card info – can you hear the crickets?

I’ve gotten more information on the Walgreens rewards card that will be rolling out the end of August/beginning of September, even though everyone agreed that the test program had been a huge cluster****.  Corporate claims to have it fine-tuned (translation: made it worse).  Here’s a brief recap from a “reliable source” who obviously doesn’t want to be identified.

Don’t know if you’ve heard already, but with the new balance rewards cards, points are not roll-able:  If you buy something with points you will not be able to use those point towards anything else with points and still earn more points.  Basically you can only use the points on stuff that is not on sale or has a sale price, because you cannot accrue  points for redeeming points.

This is how the program will be structured at the beginning, but corporate “suggests” that changes will be made to modify it.

So what they’re saying is that the way we structure deals now – back to back transactions rolling the RRs from one deal into the next – will not be allowed under the new program, nor will we be able to earn points on items purchased using points.   Makes you want to kick corporate in their Nice Nuts.

Walgreens 8/19-25 – Iheartwags takes down ad!

I don’t know exactly what is going on here, but Erica of iheartwags took down the 8/19 ad and now says it was a fake.  Something is off here.  She must get this information from the same person(s) week after week, so what happened?  I have my suspicions and we’ll see how this all plays out.  My advice is to make up your own mind as to whether or not you buy coupons and/or place orders.

There will be a huge moneymaker at Walgreens during the 8/18-25 week, so get all your ducks (coupons) in a row now.  Here’s how it works:

Zantac 24 ct 150 mg will be on sale for $7 with a $7 Register Reward.  There is a $5 coupon in 7/8 s.  But wait!

The Trojan Pleasure Pack 12 ct is also on sale for $7 with a $7 Register Reward.  There is a $1 coupon in 6/24 s, but it’s for the Vibrations line, so don’t bother.

SaD anti-diarrheal medicine in either 6 oz or 12 ct softgels is $4 with a $4 RR.  No coupon available.

Transaction 1:  Buy the Zantac for $7 and use the $5 coupon – get back $7 RR.
Transaction 2: Buy the Trojan for $7 and use the $7 RR from Zantac. Get $7 RR.
Transaction 3: Buy the Zantac for $7 and the SaD for $4. Pay with the $7 Trojan RR and the $5 coupon. You will need a $1 filler to absorb the overage. wouldn’t it be a kick if the $1 Suave came back?

Subsequent transactions roll between 2 and 3, spitting out an extra $4 RR from the SaD each time. Roll as many times as you have coupons and inventory. This looks to be the last hurrah before Walgreens moves over to the last phase of their “Kiss of Death” company plan.

Note:  The Trojan and Zantac are basic items that can be ordered regularly – the SaD looks to be a special item which will only be brought in and available a week or two before the sale date.  boo – hiss
