At least I’m honest! Decided to pay upfront for my special order of 40 cans of Old El Paso refried beans (using rain check), plus 28 bags of Kibble & Bits (they’re BOGO at $5.99 with a $1.50/1 from the 7/24 RP – other regions got better coupons… oh well), some tortillas, cilantro and expensive milk. Total pre-coupon was over $125, so that’s pretty much all I need for the last Miller beer rebate. (You are only seeing a couple bags of the dog food and two cans of OEP beans). Used a $7/$70 store cat, 28 of the Kibble coupons and $13 in OEP. After coupons I was at $54.53, which is incredibly high for me, but you have to remember I bought 112 pounds of Crack Cocaine (that’s dog speak for the Kibble), so I should be good on that end for at least a couple of days… and I’m getting back $25 from the Miller rebate.

Jewel and Free $$$ – update – dead
You’ll be pleased to know that the Lisle Jewel not only went through every VISA card in stock (under $100s are still hanging there – pah), they pulled out a box of variable amount ones, then realized that these had never been intended for sale at Jewel at all! See? If you guys hadn’t helped clean out stock for them, more stuff would just be sitting around taking up space. Seriously, though, people drove in from miles around – seriously far distances, but as I told one person, this is a job and you are commuting to this job. The fact that you are getting paid $500 an hour for a job you do standing up and fully dressed is a bonus!
While the deal is still “officially” running, check Lisle off the list of participating stores. They have now printed out and posted the Jewel policy on gift card purchases and decided that the debit cards we were buying are considered gift cards. In point of fact, this is really a non-issue, because the only cards they have left are the variable Amex ones and $25 and $50 VISA. And while you could use the Amex ones, you’d have to wait a few hours after activation before the funds were actually available…which would make for a very slow and painful deal scenario.
Jewel – Free MONEY
Got your attention now? This deal will be blown out of the water very soon, so jump on it now. Jewel is running a Buy $100 worth of gift cards and receive a $10 catalina towards a Jewel Gift Card Purchase. Pay a $5.95 activation fee for the gift card (not Jewel).
Here’s where it gets sweet: Buy a VISA gift card for $500 (I ran the first one using my DIscover Card) with a $5.95 activation fee charged. Five of the Jewel gift card cats spit out. Take a Jewel card from the card mall and have the five cats added to the card.
Second and all subsequent transactions: Buy a VISA card with the previously purchased card. Pay the $5.95 activation charge with the cash put on your Jewel card. Rinse and repeat.
WARNING: You must use a cashier for this, not self-scan. Do not use Customer Service Desk because they do not have a catalina printer. Do not use American Express because they put a 4 hour hold on the card after activation. Do not use MC because I don’t believe it’s working on this deal AND they don’t have a variable amount card going up to $400. Other gift cards have different purchase policies, i.e., cash only for purchase, 24-hour hold after activation… Stick with the various VISA gift cards.
What’s nice is that you can then use the VISA gift card to pay other bills, so you’re really not putting out cash. For example, pay your cell bill at a store with it.
Jewel Instant $5 promo coupon match-ups
If you’re running the Buy 10 get $5 off instantly promotion this week at Jewel, you’ll want to print out the Nature Valley granola bars coupons and Chex Mix ones and Pillsbury rolls and Yoplait …well, better just check them all. They do reach print limits and once they’re gone…
Found more coupons on the BettyCrocker.com site. You do have to register first (or log in), but then click the top tab at coupons.
Jewel and the Old El Paso deal
Remember my post about the Old El Paso refried beans being part of the Buy 10 promo? Then my post about them not being part of the promo? This is the post where I tell you that yes they are marked on the shelf as being part of the promotion and they generate the bonus box tops for school cats, but they do not trigger the $5 instant value discount. Customer service even checked the computer files to see if there was any mention of difficulties in getting the instant discount – nothing. Surprisingly enough, though, they had been warned that there might be problems with the bonus box tops for schools.
Since it shows on the shelf tags, your options are to wait until the problem is fixed or buy it and have customer service either manually take off the $5 at the register or after you’ve paid. Even without coupons, you’re looking at .50 cans for refried beans when the normal (hahaha) shelf price is $1.79. This is definitely a stock-up price for us. And frankly, I wouldn’t wait, ’cause corporate might just decide that it’s easier to remove the products altogether! nah, they would never do that!
Jewel upcoming promotion
Lately, Jewel is just not showing me the total love package: I get a teaser on one or two items, but frankly there’s more thrills in shopping my basement. and sadly this will continue…
Next week’s Buy 10 get $5 off instantly was supposed to have had a few very nice price points, but between the time I first learned about it and today (when I saw the ad) the products changed. Currently there are only three Old El Paso products whose price points make sense after the discount: .99 seasoning packets (down to .49), 1.49 can of chilés (down to .99), hard shell tacos or rice pouches. After all the Hamburger Helper rice blends that were almost free, I just can’t see spending cash on a tiny pouch of rice. And pay a buck for hard shell tacos? hahahahaha. Best bet for me is the chilés, since the instant .50 discount off ten will bring them down to .99 and the .50 IP coupons from coupons.com will reduce them to .49. (Told you to print them – while you’re there, print out the $1 Simply Juice coupons [two of each] for free juice) This is a great price for canned chilés.
The rest of the items? If I don’t believe a $2.50 box of cereal is a deal, you are certainly not gonna get me to drool over ones at $2.88 (after *instant discount*). Do we need more Nature Valley bars? How about Fiber One? So except for the chilés, I’m sitting this dance out.
all bets are off, however, if an unadvertised cat promotion suddenly appears…
Jewel tripping & hello Wags
Picked up another eight bottles of the OJ, three boxes of the Essentials pasta (from the Fall Fun book plus a BOGO cat PITA “found”), box ‘o beer with sausage, buns, 2L Squirt (penny promo)….plus two DiGiorno pizzas (buy beer get $5 off two DiGiorno)…Saga blue cheese (sale, no coupon). Total was about $26 after coupons for cheese (4.99), pizza ($7) and beer (12.99). Since it’s going into the rebate envelope, I’m not too worried about spending so much on groceries.
Then I paid a visit to one of the Walgreens participating in the National Library Card promotion. As I told you earlier, you should take your Estroven RRs and roll them into the blood glucose meters that are on sale for $10 with a $10 RR. Normally it would be a low-tax wash, but since I’m saving 15%, I have to be creative. In this case I found four of the Wags brand glucose tablets on clearance, which, since they were Wags brand gave me 20% discount AND there is a BOGO 50% off so each meter and two bottles ended up .70 OOP. Third and fourth transactions were meters and two giant candy bars (in-ad coupon 2/$2) which gave me OOP of .47.
And no, the irony of buying blood glucose meters and giant candy bars has not escaped me.
Jewel
My special order of Ken’s salad dressing came in, so headed on over with my rain check for 100, lots of store cats and various mfr coupons. You see here the 100 bottles of dressing, 18 ct eggs, two fancy-schmancy loaves of bread, bag of Shoppers Value chips, two bags of baby carrots, Natural Bliss coffee creamer, Friskies Crispies treats, 1/2 gallon Nature’s Farm milk and one bottle Equaline super B vitamins.
Subtotal before Preferred Card was $133.38 (pretending I was on EC, don’t you know), then let the coupons roll. First was an $8/$80, then a $5 off any Equaline product (mailer), then various free bread and carrots and chips cats that we find and a $1 mfr coupon for the milk…then the Ken’s coupons…Bottom line? $5.51.
Before you think I’ve taken complete leave of my senses, you should know that 50 of these dressings are already spoken for. The remainder are mostly various combination of Ranch (which we use for dipping chicken tenders, fish sticks, etc.) and ones that I plan to use for marinades (Asian sesame with ginger & soy, sun-dried tomato vinaigrette, raspberry pecan, raspberry walnut vinaigrette). Dates are mostly a year off.
coupons.com
Once again over on coupons.com…there’s a buck coupon for Simply Orange and Simply Lemonade (two separate coupons – yeah!). It’s currently on a 10/$10 at Jewel and also the same price at Walgreens and Dominicks. Think it’s .99 at Meijer and Walmart, but not sure. Print ’em both twice and enjoy the low tax freebies.
Ken’s Salad Dressing
I’m sitting here clipping a few (groups of ten) Ken’s salad dressing coupons from the front page of the 8/14 S – they are part of a B2G1 free sale at Dominicks through tomorrow, 8/31, where the salad dressing is $1. It’s free any way you look at it. Didn’t post before ’cause salad dressing is something we really don’t need right now, but a friend desperately needs it, so clip, clip, clip.
For those of you looking for an excuse to visit Jewel, they are also running a 10/$10 on the Ken’s and I’ve read that they have a larger selection(?). Check it out. Both deals run through Wednesday the 31st.
