Rewarding a good store

I find myself harping on this with regularity, because some don’t get it:  it makes no sense to shop at your local stores if they do not have treat you and your coupons with respect.  Case in point:  reader tells me she hit three “local” Jewels yesterday trying to score some free Pretzel Crisps.  Store one said the coupon was a copy (forgery) and wouldn’t let her use it, even after she explained that it was a print-out from the company’s FB page.  Second Jewel said that the coupon limits you to one per transaction and they would only allow one transaction.  Store three said that she could not use a BOGO on a BOGO sale, because then the item would be free (I did think for a minute that she had wandered into a Dominicks by mistake); she had to buy one and then three would be free.  She finally drove all the way to a store she knew to be über-coupon friendly and had no trouble getting her eight bags.  When I asked why she had gone to the first three stores (where she had had trouble in the past) she replied that they were close to where she lives.  So how much time and gas did she save by this decision?  Raise your hands, class…

My first rule is to shop at stores where they respect you as a customer and willingly accept your coupons, even if I’m not buying something with coupons.  Why not give a good store the extra business?  By only patronizing stores where we are treated well, those stores will eventually jump to the top of the food chain in sales.  Initially, the suits will claim it’s because of new store/layout/promotions, but month-after-month results will prove that we demand respect and will shop only those stores where we receive it.

end of rant.

Jewel tripping

Decided to stop over and pick up a few more of the Pretzel Crisps (3 bags already gone, not by me).  Saw a bunch of clearance “stuff” and grabbed:  9 Purex for $1.75 each (I’ll go back with the $1 coupons) and 2 True lemon for .60 each.  Lots of organic produce and Irish soda bread that Wags was kind enough to buy for me.  So how much did I actually spend?  I put $12.79 on a gift card, but the $9 from Purex and one more $3.49 Pretzel Crisp coupon I get back will mean I spent thirty cents.  So that’s OK.

Why we coupon

Another of the reminder posts of why we do all these “crazy” deals.

DH calls and asks me to pick him up some orange spice tea.  Every now and then I actually do something he asks; it lulls him into a false sense of complacency.  See all these little boxes of tea?  Each lousy box was almost four bucks, non-sale, non-coupon.  Total came to over $17, but I used those free $3 Post RRs from last week’s Fruity Pebbles giveaway and ended up OOP .36.  The deals allow us to buy non-deal items without selling major organs.

This now concludes our lecture/post.

the original list was stolen from couponers wanted…shhh!

Four stops in one post

Went to pick up the free Panda Express at their Ogden Avenue, DG store.  Since I was only across the parking lot from Dominicks, figured I’d run in and pick up some more of the Quaker Oats Square.  they had four… So I threw in the free 2L of Coke Zero on my Just 4U account and 18 packs of Trident, since I had nine BOGO coupons and it was a BOGO sale.  Cashier rings up everything fine until she gets to maybe the last couple of gum coupons…register beeps (probably because the sheer volume of coupons) and she looks closely at the coupons.  “Oh, they’re BOGO.”  this is a surprise?  “They’re on sale BOGO.”  cue twilight zone music.  “I can’t sell you them.  You’d have to buy one and then get 3 free.”  no, that’s not how BOGO coupons and BOGO sales work.  Brings over cs (not coupon nazi Mary), who says she’ll call the manager.  Store manager comes over and says he can let me do two transactions since I have two different types of gum and the coupon says only one coupon per purchase… Try to explain how the wording prevents someone from using ten coupons on one item, but realize that I should save my breath to cool my porridge.  Just take off all the gum and hand me back my coupons ’cause you people are majorly screwed up.  Send PITA to cs to get rain check for six cereal which I’ll use at Western Springs or Woodridge (have total of 16).   My cereal and pop purchase, less cereal coupons and $1.25 CPK OYNO came to .81.  and all the management shakeups in the world won’t help Dominicks ’cause you cain’t fix stupid…

Crossed to Panda Express and got our two free shrimp entrees.  It’s fairly spicy and very tasty.  Second set was from Butterfield/Naper location.

Driving down Ogden, decided to visit the Saratoga Jewel (Main Street) to check out their clearance section.  Couldn’t find it, but did find a whole shitload of chicken quarters (mostly frozen) reduced to .50/lb.  Also saw a sirloin steak with a $4 off coupon, which paired nicely with the BOGO on sirloin steak (so two for $6+).  Asked someone about the clearance section and they told us where it was hidden – yes hidden.  Spices that I paid .25 yesterday at the Lisle Jewel were marked .99!  Nutzoid.  They did have a rather large amount of Trident Superpack gum (spearmint and wintergreen, 18 pieces each) for .10.  Yes, you read that right, 10 cents!  So I was able to use up my nine Trident BOGO coupons after all.  It actually worked out much better because the Dominicks purchase would have been over a buck in high tax, whereas this was about .50 total.  Ended up with 66 packs which I will enjoy tremendously.  You can never have too much gum.  I paid with ten Motrin RRs, the nine Trident coupons and $1.68 in cash.

Jewel

Well, got shut out at the Pappadeaux Mardi Gras celebration.  Crazy inside; a full hour wait for bar seating.  Next year we’re there at 3 – take a big table and rent chair space.  always a plan.

Since PITA and I are starving, decided to drop by the old Jewel and check out the makings for a salad.  Got that and a whole lot more:  the back clearance rack was full (note the operative word “was”).  We picked up four cans of Emerald cashews for a $1 each ($1.50/2 1/30R2 or .25/each); two packs Sunsweet dried blueberries for $1 each (.75/1 12/5S or .25/each); Wonka Exceptionals ($1/1 3/6S or FREE).  We also grabbed two boxes of Nutrasweet for .50/each and four jars of pumpkin pie spice (they had other types, too) for .25 each (exp 10/13).  I like to add the pp spice to coffee before it’s brewed.  Smells and tastes fantastic.  Produce, no coupons – sniff – but I did use RRs to bring down the total.  I’ll return with the clipped coupons ($7.50) so my actual OOP will be $.70.   And why are people always crying about how expensive it is to feed a family of four?!  buncha whiners…

Target and Jewel and the Moosies

Took two Moosies to Puppy Parlor for their first grooming.  Here is Soul Patch (gray shades) and Runtie (brindle).  Although they all have brown eyes, PITA ‘s hair is blond.

Checked out the Gortons 50% off frozen deal at Jewel.  Though it pains me to say it, the deal at Dominicks is much better.  Buy four of the $3.99 Gortons and after coupons and $5 instant savings, you’re left paying $2.24/bag, whereas the Jewel deal is $2.99/bag.  Now, if you’re looking to burn those Motrin RRs, well then go for it, but I’m going to use up some more expired wts, so might as well give them the business.  And let’s be honest:  would it really be hard to use up the RRs on groceries?  I’ll probably get more clearance meat for the freezers.

Then off to Target for a few more pairs of pants.  Naturally by now their only selection is among puny PITA and Ringling Bros sizes.

Jewel Freezer Update

I hope all of you were able to get a freezer.  They’re great for people in apartments or smaller homes.  Don’t have room in your kitchen?  No basement?  Think creatively!  Put one in the dining room or living room against the wall and cover it with a linen tablecloth.  Looks elegant and stylish.  Since you should only be opening this a couple of times a week (at most), this arrangement works out really well for those with limited storage.

This year’s promotion, honestly?, there was no promotion, imo.  Prior years they mailed out cards/flyers – this year?  nada.  little tiny ad in the weekly ad.

Having said that, the Lisle Jewel still has plenty of freezers.  This week has the first of the 2fers (Dean’s Churn is BOGO, so get two);  if you don’t get your freezer by Wednesday, you’re SOL.  I’ll update the coupon list with BOGO info and dates as I get them.

Jewel Update

Ran another trip to Jewel to pick up more pop (actually, it was a friend who wanted me to accompany her – thought they might limit her on the soda).  I only picked up 5 (she got 10) but grabbed those insanely expensive tortilla chips for PITA Daddy ($4.99!) and a few more of the clearance steaks and a “this store only” $1.99/lb deal on pork loin.  Between this trip and the one earlier today I’m out about $48…so I’ll save the receipts and return tomorrow with 16 $3 RRs from Wags.   thank you all

My Jewel  blew through about 1200 of the 2L soda today – when we left they had maybe 30 remaining.  Told you my store director and her co-directors rock…  Don’t forget that the Igloo freezer deal starts tomorrow morning.  If you’re buying one and using a significant amount of the free coupons, make sure to leave plenty of time to check out.  The price for every free coupon has to be manually entered…

Jewel

Almost forgot about my free pop!  I only picked up 5 of the Sun Drop 2L, then threw in the Eggbeaters (free coupon in the mail), 20 of the Fisher nuts and 3 packages of clearance steak.  Here’s the skinny on the Sun Drop:  It’s supposed to be like Mountain Dew – it ain’t folks.  It’s a citrus-based soda that tastes like a cross between 7-Up and Squirt.  We all like it, so I’ll probably head on back to my Jewel later, after my mani-pedi (what, you thought I was going to say do the laundry?).  I ran up a huge subtotal here, but after my few remaining Fisher coupons, the free soda, free egg beaters, the three remaining Con Agra cats and the $2 and $3 coupons for the meat (which then cost me about $1.50 each), I was down to $26+, which receipt I will then take in together with eight of tomorrow’s $3 MotrinPM RRs (so I don’t have to pay for ANYTHING!)   mwahahahahahaha. *cough*cough*cough*

Oh, except for the full-price tortilla chips that I picked up after a phone call.  But I obviously picked up the wrong chips and now he has to go to the store because I never listen to him when he tells me what chips go with salsa and I got him the chips that are for baking ’cause see they’re too thick and he wants the thin ones.  and i still say it would be justifiable homicide  the end
