Jewel – Lisle

photo.jpg I’m posting this from MUM’s House of Plague. I stopped at Jewel on the way to pick up a few bags of Doritos, then realized I had to hit $80 before I could use one of my $8/$80 cats….decisions, decisions…So, here you see the following, brought to you through the combined magic of wine tags and register catalinas that suddenly appear in my bag – quel surprise!

You are looking at: 2 bottles of Jewel brand 100% grape juice (be careful, their grape juice that says “100% fruit juice is actually apple with grape flavoring – rat bastards); 3 bags of Doritos (price jumped up to $3!); 10 packages of pub burgers – 2 each; tray of sliced cantaloupe with strawberries; 2 quarts strawberries; 3 pints blueberries; ~ 3 lbs bananas; 2 1/2 lbs nectarines; 2 cantaloupes; 1 dz extra-large eggs; 1 quart 18% cream and finally…Bordens sliced American cheese.

Original total was about $87, after all cats and wine tags I was still at $16, so threw in the rest of my Sobe RRs and $7 in other cats. Ended up forking over $1.57. Damn, I hate spending my change like this!

Jewel – Lisle

I’m trying desperately to pick up as many pub burgers as I can before 6/23 – I might even have to set up a dedicated freezer for them!  The paper-wrapped packages each contain one pork chops; I ran it this way to use the $1 off pork products coupons that expire today.  Figured I’d also get five more of the OM deli meats, since FirstBorn has started summer school and has long breaks between classes.  Pretty much everything in this picture has a relationship going on with wine tags…except for the clearance jams and capers in the front.

On that note, be sure to check your clearance racks on a regular basis.  My Lisle Jewel had tons of the Senseo and K cups on clearance for $1.50 and $2 each.  Senseo has $1/2 coupons out there, so a buck for a box of 17 pods.  Don’t forget that you can buy something and return with your receipt and coupons within 60 days to get your cash back.

So, how much did I end up spending? My original total was about $97, which was good because I had a $8/$80 cat that PITA “found” for me.  I used 8 of the $1 pork coupons, 8 of the $2.50 pub burger wine tags, 4 of the Jewel BOGO coupons,  $5 off meat wine tag (used this on the OM meat); $2 off Doritos wine tag and 2 $2 fresh berries wine tags.  Used 3 of the $4 OM cats from prior purchase and about $24 in RRs.  Actual US currency was $1.50…but then I got another $4 cat from the OM lunch meat.  Not too shabby, considering all the meat I bought.

Update – I forgot about a huge sirloin steak I picked up on clearance.  It was originally $12.37, less the $4 store coupon and a $5 meat wine tag.

Wags and Jewel – both Lisle

Wanted to pick up a few of the Air Wicks ’cause these things are so powerful it makes visiting the basement a pleasure trip!  Hello, fields of lavender and chamomile…

I first ran 72 of the Seattle’s Best coffees in one run, just to get them out of the way.  Then I broke down the Air Wicks and milk into ten transactions, just to use up my $10 and $5 RRs:  got back $3 RR on each.

Jewel has that OM deal I posted about, so ran two transactions because, even though they stack (each 5 takes off $5), the catalina only goes up to $4, no higher.  If they ain’t gonna pay me I ain’t gonna take it!  So my total for Jewel (also had 6 packages of pub burgers, Doritos and two dozen tortillas) was $25.98.  Used up a buttload of those stupid .99 Sobe RRs, ’cause the fat wad looked like it belonged to a drunken sailor.  Paid out $1.23 and got back two $4 cats.  Don’t forget to use as many of these meat wts as you can before 6/23.  I also had a $5/50 SOMEWHERE that I couldn’t find.  I’ll use it in another day or two when I pick up more OM and pub burgers.

Wags RR wording change

I’ve been reading and hearing lots of gnashing of teeth and pulling of hair over additional wording showing up on the latest Register Rewards:  Redeemable Only At Walgreens.  At first glance I admit that I lost it, too.  First we lose the price spread on catalina promotions, then wine tags…now RRs couldn’t be used at Jewel!  Pay retail!  Not on this Goddess’ watch.

I believe that this is purely a sneaky marketing tool.  How many of you were unaware that you could use these little bits of paper as cash at Jewel due to the marvelous “manufacturer coupon” wording on the top?  Everyone, right?  Most people are unaware of this, so they’re trying to fool the newbies who’ve started watching Extreme Couponing and want to get all their groceries for free!  They’ve heard and read that they can use Register Rewards at Jewel (and previously at Dominicks).  Newbies just don’t bother reading official coupon policies.  In fact, Jewel’s corporate policy states (in part):

The following coupon types are accepted by Jewel-Osco:

1. Any coupons that do not scan or do not have barcodes should be checked for validity of expiration date and purchase requirements MANUFACTURER COUPONS:
Manufacturer Coupons are coupons issued by the manufacturer containing:
“Terms of agreement” (legal paragraph ‘To The Retailer’)
Face value
Expiration date
Verbiage “Manufacturer Coupon.”
Have a barcode. We do not accept expired Manufacturer Coupons or coupons that have had the expiration date cut off. If in doubt, call your manager.

NOTE: Jewel-Osco and other retailers issue coupons such as printed ad media coupons that are manufacturer coupons and contain the words “redeemable only at their retailer (e.g. Dominick’s, Walgreens) this type of coupon is redeemable at Jewel-Osco as long as the coupons states “Manufacturer Coupon”.

So there you have it, folks.  According to Jewel, these new RRs are exactly the same as the old ones:  they won’t beep or cause any problems whatsoever – I’ve used them this past week.  I would recommend that you print out this policy and take it with you if you are shopping at an unfriendly to couponers store…although why you’d want to give them your money in the first place doesn’t make sense to me…

Jewel – OM deal

I was holding off on posting this deal until I ran it Monday, but Rachel’s already got it showing this am (she never sleeps):  The Save $5 when you buy 5 OM deal (back page of Thursday ad) has a bunch of lunch meat deals, which tie in with a catalina starting the 13th.  So, you buy five (I’m picking the fancy-pants shaved or carving board ones) for $3.99 each (19.95).  The instant $5 leaves you at $14.95, then use the $1/2 coupons from the pictured coupons (very thin sheet), which turned up near the deli a few days ago, so then you’re at $12.95 – not good enough for me.   I plan on using a $5 off meat wts to bring the total down to $7.95, or $1.59 for each.   This deal will only work Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, unless the Instant $5 is part of next week’s sales.

Sadly, when I first worked out the numbers, I was thinking that was too high a price to pay for lunchmeat…

Jewel – Lisle

A quick run to Jewel ’cause 1) it’s so damned hot in this house that my Fannie May chocolates have fused and 2) I had some expiring wine tags.  So…you see here lots of things from the reduced to clear rack in the back.  I’ll return with the appropriate coupons another time:  the two Weber seasonings were marked $3 ($1 in 5/22 S); La Victoria salsa $1.25 ($1/2 5/15 S); five Fisher sliced & toasted almonds for a buck each ($1/2 in 6/5 S); two Kikkoman products $1.75 total (.55 off eggs when you buy Kikkoman 1/23 R); four packages Pub burgers ($2.50 wine tags); two Supreme(?) boneless pork roasts ($5 wine tag); $3.99  coffee cream (full price – it’s an addiction, ok?); four Oxi-clean ($1.50 rain checks and $3/2 in 4/17S; one 1/2 pound of American cheese (no coupon!) and one Margarita mix $5.99 ($4 wine tag).  The total was high, so I used about $40 in RRs, but I’ll go back with the above coupons ($13.10).  I left it at $16.15 just for wiggle room.

Monday’s All the News that Fits…

SMICKSBURG, Pa. — An Amish woman died as the result of an accident while doing laundry at home, the Indiana County Coroner’s Office said. The victim was identified as Ella D. Miller, 32, of Smicksburg, West Mahoning Township. She died Wednesday morning after suffering severe thermal burns on Monday morning, Coroner Michael Baker said.Miller had been heating some water in a large metal kettle with a wood fire underneath it. Her husband said she tried to increase the intensity of the fire by putting kerosene from a plastic container onto the flames, but it caused an explosion that caught her clothes on fire, according to the coroner.Miller was burned over almost her entire body and eventually died after family members and neighbors used “home remedies” to care for her, Baker said. State police from the Punxsutawney station are investigating, but Baker said there is no evidence of foul play.

MILWAUKEE, WI — Police say a woman was driving drunk when she rolled her SUV on I-94 with eleven children inside the vehicle.

The crash happened on Saturday after the 32-year-old woman crashed into a guard rail and rolled the vehicle on to its roof. She had eleven kids inside the vehicle at the time, ranging from ages 2 to 17 – eleven.

The woman, mother of seven of the kids, was arrested on the scene after admitting to drinking alcohol prior to the crash and failing a field sobriety test. It was reported her blood alcohol level was nearly twice the legal limit.

No one died in the rollover, although the majority of the kids couldn’t have been secured; five of the children were taken to the hospital. The six remaining kids were turned over to relatives.

In addition to the OWI charges for causing injury with a child under 16, police also want to charge the woman with felony recklessly endangering safety. “This is a good example of why I never believe that I’ve seen everything. This is crazy,” said Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke.

And on the local front…

A 25-year-old Downers Grove man was charged with battery and felony retail theft after he was accused of loading up a shopping cart and trying to leave an area grocery store without paying for more than $200 worth of Red Bull energy drink, Downers Grove police said on Monday.

William J. Wehrman, of the 5600 block of Woodward Avenue, was shirtless when he was arrested in the backyard of a residence in the 1000 block of 61st Street after 3 p.m. on June 4 – a short while after the man fled the store where a security guard tried to detain him, police said.

The security guard for the grocery store, located in the 6200 block of Main Street, observed the man loading a shopping cart up with multiple 12-packs of the energy drink, a report states. As the security guard followed, he noticed the man was not headed to the check-out area, but rather navigated his cart toward a store exit, police said.

As the man crossed the store’s threshold with the cart, the security guard identified himself and tried to detain the man, police said.

The man eventually broke free after a struggle, abandoning the cart and the $213 worth of Red Bull in the store’s parking lot, a report states.

Police were notified and dispatched to the scene.   During a scan of the area police observed Wehrman walking near the intersection of 61st Street and Lane Place, a report states. When officers tried to stop him for questioning he again fled and was arrested in the backyard of the residence, police said.

Note:  This has to be the Jewel at 6215 Main Street in Downers Grove.

========================================================

Jacksonville, FL — In November of last year, the Department of Children and Families received an anonymous tip that a Jacksonville family was allowing a registered sex offender to live in their home – a home that included three young children. DCF launched an investigation and made contact with the family, who reportedly told them Robert Goeing Young was sleeping on their couch, and there was no kiddy diddlin’ going on in the home.

Fully aware of Young’s conviction, the child’s parents apparently took no issue with allowing him to stay in the home. “The parents said that he was a friend of the family,” DCF spokesperson John Harrell said.  “We continued our investigation.  We spoke with the children individually.  They said that nothing inappropriate had taken place in the home.”

DCF then came up with a brilliant safety plan – Young was to have no unsupervised contact with any of the children at any time – a plan that both the parents and Young agreed to and signed. You know where this is going, right?

In February, DCF received another phone call regarding the family. Believe it or not, there was some diddlin’ going on. Shocking, no? The oldest of the three children, a 9-year-old girl, told a DCF investigator that Young had given her a ring. That apparently set off a few red flags and Young was ordered out of the home.

Subsequent interviews with the child revealed that she had been repeatedly molested by Young. What’s more, it appears as if her mother and grandmother knew of the sexual abuse and did jack shit to put a stop to it. The family actually allowed the bastard to sleep in the child’s bed. It gets worse….

The girl’s mother told investigators she once saw Young groping the kid in her bed. The girl asked her mother for help, but mom ignored her pleas. Why? Because momma was banging Young and feared he would reveal the affair to her husband if she reported the alleged molestation. And just when you think it couldn’t possibly get any worse….

Police say grandma’s 39-year-old boyfriend was getting some action, too! He was arrested after authorities learned he had forced the child to fondle him.  He was the first to be arrested in the case, and has been charged with lewd and lascivious molestation of a child younger than 12.

59-year-old Young was booked on charges of sexual battery, lewd and lascivious molestation and display of obscene material to minors. He remains behind bars without bail.

Though the names and mugshots of the victim’s family are available elsewhere, I’d rather not identify them at this time. The girl’s 27-year-old mother is being held on charges of child abuse and neglect, as is mom’s 40-year-old husband. Grandma, 61, has also been charged with child abuse/neglect. She has already been released on bail.

All three children have been placed in foster care.

Many of the above stories were lifted from The Dreamin’ Demon, and, believe it or not, I cleaned up some language.

Jewel, Lisle, this evening

OK, been planting “stuff” in the yard and getting a mani/pedi – ha! you thought I would deprive myself of my girly treats?  In the interests of full disclosure, I didn’t actually do the planting today (I did tons, though, yesterday): First Born dug all holes.

So DH decides he will die without cottage cheese and First Born chimes with the same refrain only substituting American cheese slices.  Which means I must drive over to Jewel and spend money!  Yes, you are looking at a large haul of non-free items, namely:  14 Beggin’ Strips (BOGO/BOGO); bananas; two Cape Cod chips (2 $2.50 wts); six Oxi Clean ($1.50 rain checks and four $1 coupons); Borden cheese singles; Wild Harvest butter; Playtex Living Gloves; Pillsbury biscuits four-pack; one quart cream; one English Muffins and three 2-pk pub burgers and one singleton (4 $2.50 wts ).  I used an $8/$80 cat and $20 in Register Rewards (the $4 REACH ones – so no OOP).  Ended up putting $2.92 on my Discover for the whopping June 5% bonus cash back – it’s almost a joke.

Of the $2.92,  $2.46 was tax.

Jewel – Lisle

They were still (again) out of the Beggin’ Strips, but since the BOGO sale runs through 6/12 and I have a rain check for 30, I’m covered.  I picked up the stuff here mostly to run up enough to use the $/$$ cats that PITA picks up.  In this case I was slightly over $60 before coupons – ended up at $7, but couldn’t go lower because two of the steaks can use the Stockman $2 coupons from the previous Jewel booklet (Save $24 one).  What really killed me were the four half-gallons of Nature’s Farm milk and a quart of cream.  Those dairy items alone were almost twenty bucks.  yikes!  So, let’s see what we got:  Two nice steaks and one London broil; two small packages of pub burgers, using two $2.50 wts, together with couponless buns; Jay’s chips with $2 wt; six mangoes (mgr special 3/$1); three Oxi clean ($1.50 rain check less $4 in coupons); Cliff bar (“found” cat); onions (no coupon!);  large whole watermelon (vodka wt conveniently placed next to the display).

Paid with the above coupons and $32 in RRs from the REACH toothbrushes…so free!  Will return with the $4 in steak coupons and use another RR.

Wags and Jewel

Just a short post ’cause PITA and I have to rush out to Wheaton Drama for 1776, the last (sob) show of the season.

OK, don’t hate me, but I picked up “a few Crackerfuls” and Right Guards, then turned the Crackerfuls $2 RRs into the Illy coffee deal.  By the way, the coffee rings up as low tax, so between the mfr and wags coupons and RRs, I ended up spending .58 for both items…multiplied out…

Then raced over to Jewel for most of the stuff in the picture; not pictured were the watermelon and Dr. Pepper.  (Got 2 Porterhouse steaks, 15 SBR sauce, 15 Hidden Valley, 2 Gonnella bun, OM hot dogs, 5 Cape Cod chips…and I forget what else.)  They were out of the Beggin’ Strips, so got a rain check for 30.  Total before coupons (hahaha) was $86+; after coupons, wts, a $8/80 cat and a few RRs, I was able to walk out spending $2.02.  Rats, I hate spending money…
