All the news that fits…

In yesterday’s Trib was this heartening story:

Dominick’s president resigns

Dominick’s, the Chicago-based grocer, is looking for a new leader. The chain’s parent company, Pleasanton, Calif.-based Safeway, announced the resignation of Dominick’s President Don Keprta Thursday. Dominick’s CFO Brian Baer will serve as acting president.

Safeway did not immediately respond to requests for additional information.

“Don has contributed significantly to the Dominick’s stores,” Safeway Chairman and Chief Executive Steve Burd said in a statement. “His commitment and innovation helped the stores evolve to best serve the Chicagoland customers. We are fortunate that he has produced a team that is prepared to continue to build on our current momentum.”

Safeway has struggled along with the rest of the traditional grocery business in an increasingly competitive environment, as prices have risen on soaring commodity costs. In the first quarter, however, Safeway reported its first same-stores sales increased 3.5 percent, leading Janney analyst Jonathan Feeney to describe the company as “better equipped than most of its traditional competition to weather a tough consumer environment.”

Local-area rival Jewel-Osco, owned by Minneapolis-based SuperValu, has been closing stores in 2011.

Serving as president since 2005, Keprta is credited with expanding the chain, remodeling stores and revamping operating standards and metrics.

Baer joined Safeway in 2001 as vice president of finance in the company’s Phoenix division. He was named group vice president of finance planning & analysis for company’s corporate office in 2004, and became CFO for Dominick’s in 2008.

Before joining Safeway, Baer worked with the Marriott Corp. for more than 12 years in financial management, operations, corporate finance and real estate development.

ONE DOWN, ONE TO GO (hey, you listening, Craig?  Yeah, I’m talking to you)

Jewel – SnackWell’s

Heads up on the double-dip deal:  Those of you who don’t have or won’t be ordering coupons, take heart!  I was going through my coupon booklets, finally tossing the expireds, when I saw this dog:  The Kraft Food & Family coupon booklets (with the Neely’s on the cover) that were displayed months ago at Jewel.  Well, surprise, surprise! they contain a .75/1 mfr coupon good on Nabisco crackers and cookies 9.6 oz. or larger.  The breakfast bars are less weight, so ymmv.  I’ve read that these coupons beep just like the $1/2 ones do.

Jewel Suave deal .14/3 – UPDATE

The deal works beautifully!  The blinkie was full of the $1.50/3 mfr coupons and the stack of ads was just sitting there.  Picked up 24 and paid $2.51 in total...damned high tax!

Sitting here at the library, waiting for PITA to finish a yoga class…read about a deal running ONLY THROUGH TODAY on the Suave shampoos and conditioners.  They are .88 each through today.  Use the $1/3 store coupon in this week’s ad with the $1.50 off 3 mfr coupon in the blinkie machines that are supposed to be at every Jewel in either the shampoo, deodorant or hair care products section.  You will end up paying .14 for all three (.88 x 3 = 2.64 – 1.50 = 1.14 = 1 = .14/3 or about .06 each.

I use the shampoo in our liquid soap dispensers; clean-smelling and does the trick.  Not as cheap a deal as Your Bucks (insert genuflection here), but deals change and we change with them or become typical consumers.

If you don’t find the blinkie coupons tonight, you can still buy the shampoo, using the sale and the ad coupon. Wait a bit and the blinkie coupons should appear.  You still have 60 days to go back with your receipts and coupons to get your money back, you know.

I’ll hit up the Jewel quickly after PITA gets out (if I go without her, she’ll have a meltdown) and add to this post.

and many, many thanks to the OP on CW

HOT DD Jewel catalina

Just got back from Jewel, where I was testing out a double dip cat that just started at Jewel:  Buy two SnackWell’s breakfast bars and get a $1 cat OYNO and a $3 OYNO!  woot!  Works beautifully.  For each transaction of two ($5) I used a $1/2 from the 6/19 S and the two OYNOs from the prior transaction – the first transaction I used the one $1.50 cat coupon I got during the NV cat, so I wasn’t out the entire $4.  Yes, I am that cheap.  Subsequent transactions ended up OOP .09.

I gave a heads up to the Lisle Jewel, so they’re going to be getting in as many of these as they can, since the cat runs through 8/7, giving you lots of time to get those coupons in your hot little hands.  I checked on CouponDede and she’s selling the $1/2 coupons for .15 each, with no limits.  There was a .75/1 coupon, but it was regional (not Chicago region) and pretty much sold out everywhere.

Jewel

Before I forget, there was a Trib sales rep just closing up shop.  He’s usually based at the Woodridge Jewel on 75th Street, but was just filling in at Lisle.  If you are looking for more Trib delivery deals, his name is Kevin Bastian and his cell is 630/805-2418.   It isn’t necessary to visit the stores in person; you can just call and order over the phone.  Check previous posts for the names and numbers of the two other reps I spoke with.  Kevin said this evening that the Trib is no longer offering multiple Sunday deliveries per person.  so lie…like a rug…’cause companies in bankruptcy always know the best way to handle their finances…

As I said earlier, my NV milk cats were expiring today, which necessitated a quick Jewel run.  I had a couple of those frozen vegetable store cats expiring tomorrow and a buttload (actual scientific term) of the $2 store bread coupons expiring the 16th.  What’s nice is that the milk cats ring at $4.50, so the overage went towards the bread and mangoes.  Total OOP after all the coupons and a $2 Scott cat was $3.99.  CS said my Preferred Card should make the all lights flash if I actually have to hand over cash – I agree.

Jewel tripping – Lisle

Stopped in to pick up some of the Tyson Fun Nuggets, the ones that were $6.99 on sale for $4.99 a couple of weeks past.  I had taken a rain check for 30 – – which I didn’t need  because they’ve reduced the price to $4.99.  It’s better this way, ’cause I can buy as many or as few as I want at a time.  Use the $3 coupon and get buck a pound nuggets and strips.  Quite tasty, folks.  Also picked up a couple of Irish Soda Breads using those $2 store coupons in the Jewel drinks booklet (usually found in the liquor department).  Probably use the bread for French toast tomorrow since I’ve been picking up so many eggs with those free cats that are printing.

Jewel – Lisle

I am totally wiped out – whew!  Left everything pretty much in the box and just shot the picture.

I ran 58 transactions of the Scott’s wipes and tp:  Each was .59 OOP.  Then picked up 10 more OM hotdogs, for slightly over $5.  Last transaction was the 24 pk of Jewel water using a free cat that PITA found.  She also found two more of the free frozen vegetables cats, but I’ll hold off on using valuable freezer space for another week or so.

I use these wipes on my floors, so it’s a good deal for me.  Obviously, most people have no need for such a large quantity of wipes…not unless they’re big assholes.

Jewel tripping – whew! OOP $1.68

Figured I’d just pop in and grab a few boxes of the Pillsbury brownie mix.  I really don’t like paying for baking mixes, but at .09 for the larger, family-sized ones, I’ll bite.  Actually, I’ll probably do more than bite these babies.  num num num.

So you see here 30 boxes of the Pillsbury brownie mix (.40 6/12 rp).  Since instant deals usually stack, there was no need to split the transactions, which worked really well when PITA found a FREE bakery cookies when you spend $30.  Picked up two gallons of Dean’s milk using those FREE milk cats from last week.  Also used up the last of my rain check BOGO for eight Beggin’ Strips.  They had inadvertently split up and sold my special order of Scott’s wipes, so I’ll pick up about 60 tomorrow, along with maybe 20 of the Oscar Meyer hot dogs.  When I asked FIRSTBORN if he wanted me to buy hot dogs, he answered why would I even ask.  The thick plastic allows them to freeze perfectly, so maybe I’ll pick up 30!  Using the $1/2 coupon in the 6/19 SS means .49 hot dogs.  These are decent hot dogs, so I don’t mind stocking up at this price.

The milk cats were giving me $4.50 credit, so between that overage and a couple of $1 Beggin’ Strip coupons and an expiring $2 Scott cat PITA found in the parking lot, I was in overage trouble, so threw in three of the clearance pepper plants at .50 each.

More yogurt coupons available!

I seem to have at least 180 more Dannon coupons, so if anyone wants/needs more, please email me as soon as possible.  I will not be mailing them out, so you have to either come by the Lisle Jewel and get them or buy them at your local Jewel and pick them up at Lisle afterward.

Jewel – Lisle

Decided to run in and clear a few shelves.   No need to unpack that paper bag – you know what’s inside.  Needed to pick up some bread, which explains the two loaves.  The Advil was with a free cat PITA found, together with the artesian bread (another cat find).  Actually, she found a $2 NV cat in the parking lot – rode hard and put away wet, but the bar code’s OK.  Also threw in a few packs of Dannon…I don’t know why.

Since I ended up with eight FREE milk cats, I must have picked up 32 boxes of granola bars…Let’s see 8 x .18 (tax) = $1.44.  So $1.44 for 8 friggin’ gallons of milk!  I love you, Jewel! as she wipes a tear from her eye…
