Jewel tripping – whew! OOP $1.68

Figured I’d just pop in and grab a few boxes of the Pillsbury brownie mix.  I really don’t like paying for baking mixes, but at .09 for the larger, family-sized ones, I’ll bite.  Actually, I’ll probably do more than bite these babies.  num num num.

So you see here 30 boxes of the Pillsbury brownie mix (.40 6/12 rp).  Since instant deals usually stack, there was no need to split the transactions, which worked really well when PITA found a FREE bakery cookies when you spend $30.  Picked up two gallons of Dean’s milk using those FREE milk cats from last week.  Also used up the last of my rain check BOGO for eight Beggin’ Strips.  They had inadvertently split up and sold my special order of Scott’s wipes, so I’ll pick up about 60 tomorrow, along with maybe 20 of the Oscar Meyer hot dogs.  When I asked FIRSTBORN if he wanted me to buy hot dogs, he answered why would I even ask.  The thick plastic allows them to freeze perfectly, so maybe I’ll pick up 30!  Using the $1/2 coupon in the 6/19 SS means .49 hot dogs.  These are decent hot dogs, so I don’t mind stocking up at this price.

The milk cats were giving me $4.50 credit, so between that overage and a couple of $1 Beggin’ Strip coupons and an expiring $2 Scott cat PITA found in the parking lot, I was in overage trouble, so threw in three of the clearance pepper plants at .50 each.

  1. I have 20 coupons for the hot dogs I wanted to go use tonight at Jewel (I’m thinking that deal ends today?) and was just wondering if you special order when you pick up that many, or are there usually enough in the fridge section?

    • I can’t answer for all Jewel stores, but the Lisle one was just refilling the supply when I was there a few minutes ago. Rather depends on when you own store gets their truck in. IMO, 20 is not big enough to special order something that a store would go through quickly any way.

  2. If there’s ever a deal on the only hot dog that’s worthy of being called a hot dog, Vienna Beef, make sure to post it! Those things are like $6 for an 8 pack not on sale, and the cheapest I’ve seen them for is $4 on sale. And they’re skinnier than other hot dogs to boot.

Funny story about Vienna Beef: I play online games, and one time the conversation of hot dogs came up, and somebody said hot dogs are gross. I said that I agreed that grocery store hot dogs, like OM, are not very good. They said a hot dog is a hot dog, what do you mean, what other kind is there? I said Vienna Beef obviously. They asked what that was. Then after talking, found out that nobody outside of Chicago knows what a real hot dog tastes like. They may have nice toppings elsewhere, but the hot dog itself fails most of the time compared to VB.

    • Actually, this is why Portillo’s ships hot dogs around the country – the rest of the world sucks at making and serving hot dogs. However, there are a couple of other brands that rock, too, and go on sale even less frequently than Vienna. Hebrew National (is one that) makes 100% beef dinner franks the size of a submarine and just as expensive. You can bet that any deals that come on those two will be posted in giant letters.
