Leaving the Big Apple Behind

So today’s the day we pack up the car and hit the home-bound road – hoping this time it doesn’t include breakdowns and/or black bears!  Once home I’ll sort out photos and do a “brief” recap of the awesomeness that was BloggerBash 2016.

Last night PITA and I walked around Times Square (actually just wanted a Panera scone), taking in the same old, same old:  The Naked Cowboy wasn’t in sight (white guy in white briefs), but Titus the Black Cowboy was (black briefs); the topless ladies were back in bikini underwear, heels and body paint.  FirstBorn thinks he’s getting one for Christmas – my bad.  Tremendous uniformed police presence all around the city and especially in Times Square – we’re talking hundreds compared to only the plainclothes ones of prior years. Well, I guess they had plainclothes ones, but obviously couldn’t point them out 🙂  Lots and lots of construction – whole buildings taken down for who knows what’s coming?

Back online – – here’s what happened

06d1522a-0768-476e-a5db-b64355d796a9Yesterday I spent waaaay too much time trying to load or download or even just get online at my hotel.  When I finally gave up in disgust (well, it was either that or toss the laptops out the window into the pool (yes, our room overlooks the hotel pool) and went out with PITA, the desk clerk informed me that the entire hotel was down and the technicians were working on it.  phooey for modern technology!  Remember, though, that I continued to tweet all day.

So we headed downtown to The Strand, one of the largest bookstores in the world I believe and honestly?  A little too large for me to browse (and you know I loves me my books).  The selection of new and used books gets overwhelming after a bit, so I took a few shots of books to check out of my library, bought two (I’m getting low on my vacay reading) and some neat refrigerator magnets.

382915c0-3cc9-4575-95e4-a4b82a5e3375Then off to the East Village Cheese shop where all my cheese dreams and fantasies come true.  It’s my yearly pilgrimage and one I adore.  Luckily my hotel room has a refrigerator so no cheesy worries.  Picked up a baguette and enjoyed late lunch in the park.  Grabbed the subway back updown since the temperatures have all been in the muggy 90’s this week.

d3ffda09-0f03-4ed1-b5de-4834bc4a87cbThis holistic pet shop was across the street from the cheese shop – several stores wide.  There are lots and lots of people out walking their pets, so obviously this is a lucrative business.  Well, in New York City, at least!

168d607d-b235-48c2-849c-2927d6386c51Later PITA treated us to a mani/pedi, since there wasn’t anything we wanted to grab on Broadway (well, through the discount site, that is!)  Stopped for ice cream from a truck – I ate mine, but PITA’s ended up eating her!  Told her you have to eat really fast in the heat.

Walked around a bit longer, but after BloggerBash’s last day Rock the Vote cruise and all the dancing and jumping (well, don’t you always jump when I will Survive comes on?), our legs and feet were not doing the happy dance, so we grabbed some pizza for a buck a slice – beat that Costco!549468b8-e35a-42be-bc72-dbb83580a986

Back from BloggerBash – Day One

Well, hard to believe, but PITA ate like it was last call on the Titanic…stopped at CVS on the way back to the hotel and she tells me that she feels a little funny.  So tonight will be a quiet one – no gadding about at all.  Well, maybe we’ll talk a short walk

Lots more tweets will be sent during tomorrow’s BloggerBash, including the cruise around the harbor when it closes.  Course the boat was moving plenty enough this evening!

leaving on a jet plane…i wish

The wi-fi here in the mountains basically sucks donkey balls – almost dial up. Seven minutes to open a few tabs and post ONE item. So, will call for my newly engine-sealed car and head off into the sunrise within the hour. Which is probably how long it would take for a few more posts…

NYC is just a few hours away, so will post and tweet much more as things get more lucid and the caffeine kicks in.

One interesting thing is that Wyndham Rewards (loyalty program) has this motel plastered with posters and full-size cardboard cut-outs of this bearded and mustached guy in a suit waving a wand. No idea who he was and frankly, he looked a little creepy – – imagine the Burger King guy on Atkins. Reading outside yesterday afternoon when two guys get out of their car, one carrying the same cut-out about 12 inches tall. Little too old to be playing with paper dolls, but not my business. Turns out they work for Wyndham and Beard Guy is a (the?) wizard on Game of Thrones. Since I have no interest in this show, have never watched it and only see pictures of the women on every friggin’ magazine cover, I was surprised. So having a spokesperson from a show with themes of incest, murder, rape, blood, gore and veins in the teeth is considered a good fit for a family motel. If you are the Manson family.

And don’t say Wizard Out to someone who has never seen the show – – you just sound insane. Not that there’s anything wrong with that.

Live from New York – – not

So our one-night stay in Pennsylvania has turned into two…Last night, while driving through the mountains of Pennsylvania (where I live, anything requiring you to shift bike gears is a hill) – AT NIGHT – the temperature gauge shot up to high and I became really alarmed.  Got off one exit early (still less than 10 miles from motel) to find a gas station.  Well, I apparently took the God’s Armpit exit ’cause there were no houses, store or even streets for miles, while I grew increasingly more nervous about destroying my car’s engine.  Pull off to the shoulder, leaving on headlights and four-ways ’cause there were so many trucks zipping past I wanted major visibility!  No internet and spotty cell phone coverage.  Call 911 (a couple of times) and the call reroutes to non-emergency, so they can’t locate me.  All I can tell them is there are a LOT OF TREES HERE.  Turns out it’s a state park.  And there are lots of black bears…which won’t bother me, but hey, you know what?  I’ll just sit in the car with the doors locked and windows up and unless the bear is wearing a Subaru maintenance uniform, he ain’t getting in.  Long story short, we added fluid (a part ranger and state police helped), but the radiator wasn’t empty.  Started back down tree lane with the state police car behind me; gauge went nuts after a couple of blocks.  Took a long time, but they were able to locate a tow truck a couple of towns over and we ended up – finally – at our motel after midnight.

So apparently the only local Subaru mechanic is related to a motel owner, so that’s who picked up my car for the replacement of the head gaskets.  Yes, basically a full engine repair and tune-up tossed in as well, just for grins, and I sit here until tonight or early tomorrow.  Sadly, my car was just checked last week before the trip.  But isn’t that the way it always is?

Since I’m not required to sign in by a particular time for tomorrow’s blogging convention, I should still be fine.  PITA was ready to choke me when I said maybe we should just forget about the Broadway tickets we already bought and just go on home.

Better than Goodwill Shopping!

02f68e34-d23a-4a83-a9c9-12179d26bda3Saw the garage sale sign on the way to the library and told DH we needed to stop there on the way to lunch “because I had a good feeling about it.”  Whoa!  Tons of new stuff (all new, actually) and impossibly small size shoes – 5½ and 6, which just happens to be the size PITA wears!  The fifteen pairs of shoes and boots, plus Isotoner gloves, Talbots sundress (nwt @ $128), a cotton dog/cat washable bed, some hats and, of course, the 100% cotton comforter it’s all resting on.  PITA is set for years now.  Oh, and the OOP was $27 (the price tag on the Isotoners alone!).

Sam’s Club Shopping

8c08ae98-c420-4e2f-b432-ebfdf56802cdSince Costco stopped carrying my favorite coffee, the Sam’s Club Offer to Costco members couldn’t be more fortuitous!  Decided to pick up a few 2 lb packages, since the whole beans last a long time.  Not that it’s likely to hit expiration dates in my house!  Walk in and show my Costco card – old guy looks at it and says you know you’re at Sam’s Club, right?  I give him The Look, his brain fart passes and I walked on.  Couldn’t have been easier to check out since I didn’t have to do anything but pay with a Visa card.  easy-peasy shopping.

Cooking with the Cheapo – hot & humid dining

I started with a nice mix of olive oil, a touch of balsamic vinegar, fresh ground pepper, powdered garlic and some Parmigiano Reggiano grated cheese.  Obviously adjust to your personal taste, since we’re big garlic fans over here and you may not be.  Slice a rustic baguette about ¾” on a slight diagonal and paint the mixture on each slice.  Enough to soak into the bread, but not make it too soggy.

I’m using a mild Provolone here, but choose another cheese if you have it on hand or there’s a great sale 🙂

Add thinly-cut Prosciutto to each slice, again to your personal preference. When you’re finished…stand back and watch ’em disappear.  This is our second baguette!

Don’t Rain on My Parade – The Growing Place Gardener’s Art Festival

fc872fca-ebdd-4a22-a86c-a619359c92f7Spent a few hours at The Growing Place in Naperville today for their Gardener’s Art Festival – clever art, fun music and food trucks!  PITA got this really cool watering chicken with beads and crystals, one of the tote bags shown below (DH is the photographer… which is why his all look in focus!), plus a tie-dye tee.  We all enjoyed toasted cheese sandwiches and rosemary french fries. This painted window somehow appealed to me…

Today’s choice is the cobble hill toddy in several colors.  Normally $378, it’s $149 with promo code PINKLIGHT.  Free shipping and return.  I bought the Cedar Street Hayden bag during Sunday’s sale; it came within a couple of days – incredibly well-packaged!  I’m still trying to erase the visuals from the flood aftermath. And yes, those were Fendi, Coach and Fossil bags.8734770867_959feb08c5_n
