Another year, another precipitous drop in the number of coupons that are available to use. New figures show that coupon distribution over the past year has once again fallen to levels not seen in decades.

Inmar traditionally has the most thorough and detailed analysis of coupon trends, but this year, Kantar is first out of the gate with figures for 2019. And for fans of coupons, the figures aren’t promising.

Have you done your coronavirus panic buying yet?

Shoppers across the country – and, indeed, around the world – have been reporting packed stores and empty shelves, as people apparently spent the weekend stocking up for what they fear could be a coronavirus emergency. “I have never in my life seen Seattle Costco lines like this – 40 carts deep with over one-hour wait times,” one Twitter user wrote on Saturday (while sharing the above photo). “Water, toilet paper, rice, meat – all are disappearing fast,” another tweeted. “I just bought an additional year’s worth of food last night,” a third Twitter user announced.  Here’s the Coupons in the News article.

Museum Day is an annual celebration of boundless curiosity hosted by Smithsonian magazine. Participating museums and cultural institutions across the country provide free entry to anyone presenting a Museum Day ticket. Like many of us, two Pennsylvania women would sit down with the Sunday newspaper each week and clip coupons to use at the grocery store. Unlike many of us, these two women would then exchange their coupons for cash, and deliver the money in sealed envelopes to their boss. Week after week after week.

Now, their boss has pleaded guilty to theft, for submitting nearly $300,000 worth of coupons to manufacturers for reimbursement that his customers never used. 60-year-old Michael Mihelic, who owns four Shop ‘n Save stores in the Pittsburgh area, reached a plea deal with prosecutors this week, just over a year after his arrest.  Here’s the Coupons in the News article.
