Funniest stuff still on grocery shelves

Here’s a funny article from HuffPost about what’s being passed over during panic shopping (and it ain’t just kale!).  One person points out that all the pasta in gone from the regular grocery section, but the Italian pasta in the International section is fully stocked.

Stroll the aisles of your local grocery store right now and you’re bound to get frustrated by all the things that aren’t in stock: Eggs? Good luck. Bread? Eh, maybe, though even then, it might only be something like Hawaiian sweet rolls. Pre-packaged romaine lettuce? You better grab the last one before it goes, my friend.

only 13 new printables this month!

For many shoppers, the first day of a new month can be both anxiety-inducing, and reassuring. First, the monthly rent or mortgage payment is due. But the first of the month is also when many SNAP and WIC recipients get their benefits replenished. And it’s traditionally the day when your favorite printable coupon site unveils dozens or even hundreds of new offers for you.

Unfortunately for cash-strapped couponers navigating their way through the current coronavirus crisis, one of those monthly events didn’t occur yesterday.  Here’s the entire Coupons in the News article which points out that the majority were for Air Wick products 🙂

Stolen SUV with 192 rolls of TP

An SUV with the trunk open and stuff spilling out

Beverly Hills police pulled over a stolen sports utility vehicle and found 192 rolls of toilet paper inside. Police arrested the driver but said it was unclear whether the toilet paper was stolen or where it came from.   Here’s the LA Times article.  PITA saw it and said, hey looks like something you’d have, which made me pull up the August, 2010 post of my Cottonelle tax-only purchase from Walgreens.

more loaves from the oven

Baking bread is seriously a no-brainer, I don’t care how many times you’ve tried and failed.  Don’t go The Great British Bake Off approach – just realize that people (read: women) have been making this stuff almost every day for a thousand years or more without fancy cookbooks with exact measurements and certain salts (yogurts and butter).  Here’s the link to a prior post and a photo of tonight’s bread.

SmartSource & Checkout 51 – – Sold!

Will SmartSource start offering more printable and digital coupons – and fewer, if any, printed coupon inserts or in-store coupon machines? Will Checkout 51 ever go receiptless, or expand into new categories?

We may find out soon, as the owner of those two brands, and others, is about to come under new management.

Nine months after announcing that it was exploring a potential sale of its News America Marketing division, News Corp has announced that it will indeed be selling the business, to private equity firm Charlesbank Capital Partners. Here’s the full Coupons in the News article.

a new loaf

First batch of the season – well, technically it’s the only thing I got going around here since I already did a load of laundry.  woot!  Haven’t taken it out of the pan to cool on the rack yet.  one thrill at a time…

No more paper coupons for BJ’s

It’s hard enough to save money when you’re trying to stock up to survive a pandemic, when stores are suspending their sales circulars and many people don’t know where their next paycheck is coming from. Now, in a cautious move that has the unfortunate effect of adding to all the economic uncertainty, one major grocery chain is taking aim at coupons.

BJ’s Wholesale Club, the East Coast retailer notable for being the only club store that accepts manufacturer’s coupons, has announced that it will no longer accept paper coupons of any kind – indefinitely.  Here’s the entire Coupons in the News article, but frankly, I don’t buy this explanation.

Colleges refunding tuition or not

Lots of colleges across the nation are refunding partially or in full those who paid for Spring classes (including COD) since the difference between online and actual classes and teacher/student interaction just isn’t the same, obviously.  Here’s a video response sent by NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts Dean.  Note that undergraduates at Tisch pay $29,276 in tuition and fees — not including books or housing. Full-time graduate students pay $31,721. And those numbers are just for Spring 2020.  In an email to the student body this week, Allyson Green, dean of the school, seemed to address some concerns students had about tuition reimbursement. Students would not be refunded, she said, and explained why, then attached this video.  This is from an article on CNN.  wow, just wow…
