more social distancing grocery options?

Over the past couple of weeks, many grocery stores jumped into action to protect their customers and employees from the coronavirus. One grocer proposed special shopping hours for seniors, now nearly everyone offers them. One installed plexiglass cashier shields, now many of them have.

Over the weekend, thousands of members of the Arizona National Guard began working to transport goods to store stockrooms, in order to help employees at dozens of grocery stores throughout the state to keep the shelves stocked.  Here’s the entire article from Coupons in the News.

18 Underrated Pantry Items to Have

Here’s an article from HuffPost about those items which professional chefs (not us plebe cooks) keep and I was shocked at how many of them I already have on my own basement shelves!  Tossing in salsa – duh!  Well, now that I know what kippers actually are (and considering they’re served in every story set in England I read), it’s something I’ll have to try.   Here’s the interesting HuffPost article.

more coffee = better health!

Coffee doesn’t have the best reputation as a healthy beverage, despite several studies that suggest the contrary. The caffeinated drink is more than just a mood-stabilizer and morning savior. Among its many health benefits, researchers have linked it a lowered risk of Alzheimer’s disease and suggest it’s a worthy defender against cirrhosis of the liver.  Here’s an article that explains why more is better 🙂

Shop-Rite ends double coupons

ShopRite

On the one hand, many people seem unconcerned with clipping coupons at a time like this – they’re simply grabbing the essentials when they can, no matter the price. On the other hand, it’s a time of great economic uncertainty, and for people who don’t know when they’re going to get another paycheck, saving every penny is essential.

So it may not have been the best of times for ShopRite stores to decide to stop doubling coupons.  Here’s the Coupons in the News article; we don’t have any of these stores around me, but this might impact you.

Sometimes you’ll find your paper has divided them differently and not all papers will carry the same coupons or even have the same values. We get lots of pretty Tide pictures here in the Midwest 🙂

are grocery stores the tipping point?

An interesting article in The Atlantic about how our essential stores might just be the tipping point for COVID-19, given that many people escape to them ’cause there’s nothing else open and they’re really not equipped to handle sick shoppers.  Remember, The Atlantic is currently offering all coronavirus articles free of charge.  Frankly, it’s the very last sentence in the article that scares me the most.

Activating Discover Bonus Points

Starting April, the quarter’s 5% bonus reward on Discover will be Uber, Lyft, gas stations and wholesale clubs.  Since most people grab car services when they’ve had a few too many or need a fast pick up from the train station, that’s not gonna be a big one and with no driving, we’re saving a ton on gas costs already…leaving Costco and Sam’s Club.  Starting July it’s restaurants and PayPal.  Man, bonus points are really gonna suck this year 🙁

What exactly is COVID-19?

In case you’re not sure exactly what COVID-19 is and does, here’s an interesting article from The Atlantic explaining it.  Spoiler – I don’t understand all of the article either, but it does explain the hand washing stuff, the difference between it and regular flu and why warmer weather might not be the savior we anticipate.  The Atlantic is offering free reads on all the Coronavirus articles.

Covid-19 from your newspapers?

From the “no such thing as a dumb question” department – could your Sunday newspaper, and the coupon inserts contained within it, give you the coronavirus?

The short answer – most likely not. But it’s a question that newspaper publishers, already struggling in a difficult economic environment, find themselves grappling with.  Here’s the Coupons in the News article.

will you still look for deals after the virus?

Your grocery store is out of hand sanitizer. The toilet paper supply is hit or miss, and there are strict purchase limits on everything from personal care items to paper plates.

If you’re running low on any of these items – are you really going to wait until there’s a coupon and a sale before stocking up? And are you going to opt for the best deal, or what’s best for your family?  Here’s the Coupons in the News article, but it’s what we’ve been seeing all over … people on the floor grabbing cans of private label anythings (except pumpkin pie filling) so they can get full cartloads.
