Feel good bank commercial – obviously not mine

I told you all about my whopping 13¢ check received from Chase for interest accrued on the flood insurance proceeds, right?  Here’s a bank that shames their United States brethren (although that would only work if Chase felt shame).

Dreamfields Class Action Lawsuits

There is a $5 million settlement to be shared by anyone who purchased Dreamfields Pasta with a label that referred to “glycemic index” or “digestible carbs,” in the United States between February 2004 and July 1, 2014.  You can submit for up to 15 boxes without a receipt for B&M purchases or unlimited if you purchased directly from Dreamfields.  We bought an awful lot of Dreamfields from Dominicks and Jewel during those ten years – definitely more than 15 boxes!  Here’s a link to the page with the info and claim form.  Print it out and mail it before September 1, 2014 and receive $1.99 for each box.  Note that the $1.99 figure can be changed depending on how many valid claims are received – could be more or less.

Tuesday

downloadMonday’s storms were really something – and as always, the Flood of April, 2013 lurked in the back of my mind.  Basement was fine when I went to bed, but at some point during the night the new injector pump stopped and I found a soggy basement, although, admittedly only a couple of inches and only in a few sections, when I went down to run laundry.  The drainage tiles outside that direct water into the sump pump well work very well and the water kept coming in but was not getting pumped back out.

Immediately texted DH at work:  basement flooded.  pump not working.  Amazed that the phone range within seconds and he said he’d be up in about an hour (long commute).  He put on a pair of Crocs boots and went into the basement.  How discombobulated was I?  I had already soaked through two pairs of slippers and never even thought to put on my own matching Crocs!  Or maybe use the wet vac instead of brooms and towels!  Yeah, I’ll admit it:  He was way ahead of the Goddess on this one!

So no stockpiles were harmed, but lots of wet boxes of stuff we’re storing for a friend have to go out today.  DH poked at the pump a bit and it came back on.  This new one is so quiet that you can’t hear if it’s working or not, only by the water coming out the hose and decreased water in the well.  So spent the morning and afternoon mopping and washing towels.  ugh.  DH says we’ll keep an eye on the pump ’cause maybe it’s just something that caught the float.  Sent FirstBorn down to check before going to bed and everything was fine then and fine now.

The rest of the day we were at my mom’s visiting my brother and niece who’d just flown in...fun’s over, now back to work, you lazy Goddess!

Celebrate National Donut Day!

Since today is National Donut Day, here’s some places to score one (or more…)

Krispy Kreme is giving away free donuts at their US and Canadian retail stores, no purchase necessary.  Puerto Rico and Connecticut are excluded.

Dunkin’ Donuts is giving away a free donut with a beverage purchase.

Tim Horton US locations.  Note that the closest location to Chicago is in Michigan; kinda far for free donuts.

Cumberland FarmsDoughnut Plant in New York City, and Winn Dixie are also participating.

New York City will have an Entenmann’s truck and tent in Madison Square Park, where you can get a free doughnut and coffee and enter win free doughnuts for a year.

All the news that fits: Pink Slime Returns

UntitledYou only thought you’d seen the end of it!  Since there’s been such a drought, beef production is down, which means processors will be shaving every fraction of an inch that they can…so enter The Return of Pink Slime.  Click here to watch the Wall Street Journal Live video.

Dumpster diving: LA-style

IMG_20140524_170607Reader says it looked like a laser printer, but since she’d already picked one up from the same dumpster at an earlier date, she wasn’t interested.  Probably needed a new cartridge…

Reminds me of the person who picked up a brand-new (nubs still on tires) bike for his daughter from the curb – and yes, he asked if it was really trash or just dumped there by the kid.  It was garbage because one of the tires was flat.

Arby’s to debut 13-hour commercial!

From the New York Times:

TELEVISION commercials have grown shorter over the decades, with 60-second spots the norm at the dawn of the medium, 30-second spots growing popular in the 1970s, and 15-second spots catching on in the 1980s. The number of 15-second ads grew more than 80 percent between 2008 and 2012, according to Nielsen, which notes the popularity of mobile devices, where commercials must impress quickly as users toggle among apps.

Arby’s, however, is about to air a commercial long enough to tax the battery life of even the heartiest of mobile devices — 13 hours.

When it appears once on a single television station in Duluth, Minn., beginning Saturday afternoon, it is expected to enter the Guinness Book of World Records, shattering the record for the longest television commercial of 60 minutes, held by the Nivea brand for a spot that ran in Switzerland in 2011.

I can just hear some kid whining that he’ll take out the garbage (or she’ll clean her room) after the commercial…

NRA update: I ache

I ache in places I didn’t think had muscles to ache!  My neck and shoulders are killing me from all those heavy totes of free food (yeah, whine about it, why dontcha), my feet hurt from the miles of walking.

But free food (and the quarts of moonshine) is good food, so I’ll struggle to carry on, because, as Scarlett said:  “After all, tomorrow is another day.”

home again, home again, jiggity jig

This picture and the next are only a part of today’s haul, which includes more organic produce from Sysco, over five pounds of sharp cheddar cheese spread, an 8 lb bag of Parmesan shreds, TWO quarts of moonshine that DH will fall over for (he’s been buying this at Binny’s!), loaves of Turano Asiago bread, goat cheese, bags of croissants and pan au chocolat (among many, many other items).  The Sysco people basically said go to it – – and I did, grabbing lots of Romaine hearts and loose leaf to go with all the other things.  I think I’ll make a very light supper of the Turano baguettes with the muffalata (Italian-style muffaletta) and a sprinkling of cheese.  Brought home a few gyros for FirstBorn.  Cuban coffee was very tasty; strong but no bitter aftertaste.

This product is another out of Florida, so if you see it, grab a bag. The pancakes were super fluffy. I have a bag, so we’ll see just how much is the mix and how much is the electric griddle!

photo 3.JPG This product is Del Campo Dulce de Leche, but from Argentina, Dulce’s original home (so they claim). It’s much smoother than the Mexican variety, tasting like melted caramel with a great aftertaste. They got into Florida Walmarts as a test less than six months ago and say they’re doing really well, so look for them – eventually – up in the Midwest. If you’re in the Florida area, you are definitely in luck. They make about four varieties, including a chocolate one and a hazelnut spread. FirstBorn said the chocolate tasted like liquid fudge…which would certainly work for me!

photo 2.JPGThis is the Stu’s Doctor’s Bag pack that you can use to make your own bloody mary prepared just as you like it (has its own handles and everything)!  It has pickles, etc. and really was very, very tasty, even without the booze!

photo.JPG Coke used holographic glasses at their display – no paper cups for them!  Different ones for the first three days, but today’s was the same as yesterday… we found their distributor on another level and got some super, super cool ones that Coke hadn’t offered (more than pictured)! They’re dishwasher-safe, too!

photo.JPG New company, think they’re now at Whole Foods.  Sad to say, but they beat the pants off Wholly Guac (which has gone downhill over the past year, wouldn’t you agree?): I love how you can get the poblano, jalapeno or classic varieties which makes it even easier to be a lazy, fat butt.
