Dollar Tree to buy Family Dollar!

Good news for me ’cause the closest FD store near me creeps me out while I love everything DT (staff, selection, everything) – maybe FD will get a reboot!. Here’s the story from The New York Times:

Updated, 7:06 a.m. | Dollar Tree agreed on Monday to buy Family Dollar Stores for about $8.5 billion in cash and stock, uniting two of North America’s biggest deep-discount retailers.

The deal comes amid pressure on Family Dollar by the activist investor Carl C. Icahn, who urged the company last month to explore a sale of itself. But Family Dollar said in a statement that it had been exploring strategic options since the winter.

Under the terms of Monday’s deal, Dollar Tree will pay $74.50 for each share of Family Dollar. The bid is made up of $59.60 a share in cash and Dollar Tree stock worth about $14.90. Including debt, the deal values the target company at about $9.2 billion.

The bid represents a premium of nearly 23 percent to Family Dollar’s closing price on Friday.  Read the entire article here.

Wacky inserts!!!

Instead of the Smart Source with the Healthy Essentials on the cover, I got double the Crabfest ones in every single Tribune delivered today! Yup, some papers even had doubles! And with my luck, Crabfest will be the dud insert of the week…

my cherries are filled with pits…

photo.JPGI can just imagine someone calling Ultra corporate to complain that their cherries only contained pits, not the advertised filling.  Were I in customer service, I’d say that the pits were the antioxidant filling!  which is why i’m not on that side of the counter…

this is from the new ad, by the way, in case you’re looking for cheap cherries…

Greetings from The Big Toy Book!

photo 3.JPG Yeah, no wonder I’m tired – I rode all the way from Chicago on this puny scooter!  And this was not the way I wanted to appear here – I actually brought my big girl clothes with, but there was a mix-up and I was unable to get my badge until later, leaving me no time to go back and change.  T-shirt is truly evil…
photo 2.JPG Picked up this Hello Kitty gardener set for PITA. Boy, that Hello Kitty sure says a lot for a cat without a piehole! How about this short video of Kitty? Remember those Garfield stick-ons? Well, this Hello Kitty not only clings to your car windows, she also dances!  Talk about an accident waiting to happen…

For fans of The Walking Dead, these are incredibly life-like figures – some even have dirt marks!

photo 1.JPGMore photos tomorrow morning before I head on out.  It’s a full day tomorrow with an entirely new set of vendors.  Remember, many of these toys and games and action figures are not available in stores yet, so don’t go a’lookin’ for ’em.  I’ll be getting a nice big box of swag in the next week or two, so maybe a giveaway or two??????

Lunch: East Side-style

photo.JPG Another place I’ve known and loved is what used to be the Eldridge Street Dumpling House, obviously on Eldridge Street! btw, when you get all the way down to the really old parts of Manhattan, the streets go back to names…or should I say they never were numbered, like the rest of Manhattan. This is old country, folks. Well, turns out there’s a Vanessa’s Dumpling House on 14th street, so I stopped there on the way back from getting cheese and grabbed the two pancakes (sesame seed and chives) and boiled dumplings for lunch and an early dinner (or snack). Dumplings were $3.99 and the total was $7.16. Ate the 8 dumplings and will munch on the sandwiches while I walk around.

Cheese, glorious cheese!

A trip to NYC is not complete without a visit to the East Village Cheese shop. You can see how cheap this stuff is, so even after packing it into the Priority Mail box, it’s a steal. And yes, it gets there fine, in two days time. Hey, I’m a poet and don’t even know it!  Here’s the box, already packed.  Also have two baked fig balls, some bread and a couple of rather large pieces of halvah, none of which need to be refrigerated, so will take back with me on the plane…after taste-testing, of course!

New York has nekkid peoples!

photo.JPGAnd I thought the Singing Cowboy who wore boots and tighty whiteys was weird. There were a whole group of these nekkid babes (well, with body paint) around Times Square. FirstBorn says, assuming they’re not men, did you get their numbers? sigh… Sent the picture to DH who was out with a male friend – betcha you were here getting jiggy!

photo.JPGphoto.JPG And for more photos, look at these CVS and Walgreens ads.  Obviously you can tell the Chicago ones…Look at the price of the sale Nestle – 99¢ each! On the plus side, you would hit the $25 threshold really fast!

Naturally I stay only at the finest hotels – my room comes with a cat!

I’m leaving on a jet plane…..

Catchy phrase, huh?  I’m leaving in a few for the Big Apple, where I will be attending Blogger Bash NYC, from the same folks who held last year’s Big Toy Book’s Sweet Suite which was the bestest and most awesome part of BlogHer13.  Even better than those free cases of Trojan lube (and you all know how much I enjoy things with the word Free in them).  This one promises to be much larger in scope and it’s held over a day and a half instead of a few hours).

I’ll be posting pictures on the Flickr feed and post updates throughout the day.  Definitely gonna pick me up some great cheap cheese from the East Village Cheese Shop!!

2nd Stockpile Swap tomorrow, July 12th

stockpileswap2The first Mashup Mom and deranged.me Stockpile Swap Meet in April was so successful that we’re holding another one!  No registration required – show up with stuff to swap or to just say hi!

Join us at the Lisle Public Library on Saturday, July 12th in Meeting Room A from 1-3.  Running low on peanut butter and hoping to swap for your extra jelly? Stop by and see what you can find. If you are looking to swap a lot of something or looking for something special, feel free to comment.

♥   Bring one/take one – this ain’t a shopping trip
♥   Everyone should be able to leave with something new
♥   If you have lots of items, leave most in your car and bring in a few samples or            pictures – bring in the rest as needed
♥   This is a caveat emptor meet: You check for expiration, condition, etc.

No selling is allowed at this event per Library rules.  No money can change hands; bring items with the understanding that you’re giving them to others.

Remaining stockpile items will be donated to the Lisle Township Food Pantry, which serves residents of Lisle and unincorporated parts of Lisle, Naperville and Woodridge. I’ve donated here for years and can vouch that they’re a very dedicated group of mostly volunteers who serve a large number of households.
