Should we be taxed on instant savings?

Just when you think you’ve figured out how you’re going to be taxed on an item you purchased with a coupon or rebate, along comes a legal dispute that calls into question one state’s interpretation of its own tax laws, and a retailer’s effort to provide savings for its customers – and itself.  Here’s the article from Coupons in the News.  My take on this is that this is not going to only apply to one store – taxing bodies will use it to show they have a right to tax our savings.

Jet Blue Winter Sale Returns – $44+

The Jet Blue Winter Sale returns, with tickets starting at $44 for trips through March 31st (purchase by 1/15).  They also have package deals (like Las Vegas ones).  Oooh, Chicago to Ft. Lauderdale – sunny skies and warm beaches would sure be nice in March…or next week.

no more redplum or RMN printables

Don’t go looking for printable or digital coupons on RedPlum or RetailMeNot anymore.

It’s been nearly two years since the owner of RedPlum said it was retiring the name, changing it to RetailMeNot Everyday. That change took effect immediately on the Sunday coupon inserts, but moving all of RedPlum’s online content to the RetailMeNot website took a bit longer.

Two years later, that transition is finally complete – but not everything made the move to its new home. Print-at-home and digital load-to-card coupons that were once available on both sites, are now available on neither.

Valassis, the owner of RedPlum and RetailMeNot, has drastically scaled back its printable and digital coupon offerings. As of a few weeks ago, the RetailMeNot.com/Everyday page once dedicated to grocery coupons now contains only coupon codes for online grocery orders and links to external sites. The RedPlum.com website has been mothballed. And affiliate sites that still provide RedPlum printable coupons via direct links and dedicated coupon galleries – like the one here on Coupons in the News and other coupon sites – will no longer have any to offer, effective at the end of this month.

Here’s the entire article from Coupons in the News, but honestly, getting those coupons to print was always a crapshoot for me.

Cat 1, Humans 0

Remember when I posted about the cat eating all the greens (except arugula) from the AeroGarden and I was planning to move it to the top of the refrigerator?  Apparently he overheard that conversation and decided to show who was boss. FirstBorn saw him sitting up there last night.

No Pants Subway This Weekend

The No Pants Subway Event started in 2002 in NYC – natch – and spread from there.  Each year a group of riders get on the train sans-culottes and act like everyone else, which tends to freak out other people riding!  This year’s ride takes place on January 12th beginning at noon at the Loyala Station on the Red Line, traveling into the Loop.  Here’s the details.

more hospital follow ups

I’ve gotten a couple of calls now from Blue Cross/Blue Shield about care management – one message I just ignored, but took this last one.  Apparently they want to offer me recuperation services and if I need to go into rehab – – seriously?  I’m at home getting ready to return to COD and the world of tap and yoga.  What do they think is wrong with me?  And before you answer, I did ask if these services included housekeeping, but the answer was no.

Nurse also said that it was good I had kids so they could help if I needed any.  I said my kids would step over my body to get to the refrigerator and then complain we were out of milk.  Isn’t that what most kids are like?

Jet Blue Winter Sale – last day to buy

Last day to buy Jet Blue tickets starting at $44 for trips through March 31st.  They also have package deals (like the Las Vegas one shown).  Oooh, Chicago to Ft. Lauderdale is only $64!  Gosh, sunny skies and warm beaches would sure be nice in March.

Feed me, Uncle Sam!

How’s this for economic stimulus – free coupons, courtesy of the U.S. government!

No, Uncle Sam isn’t planning to start dropping off bundles of Sunday coupon inserts on your doorstep, though that might be kind of nice. Instead, if one Ivy League academic’s idea becomes reality, you could get government-funded coupons for free meals at your favorite restaurants the next time the economy goes sour.  Here’s the entertaining, if goofy-sounding, idea from Coupons in the News.

I switched banks and made money!

As I vented in an earlier post, both PITA and my debit cards were hacked within a couple of weeks – in her case (these were both Uber charges, btw) using a debit card that had supposedly been deactivated by First American Bank six months ago.  I’ve never ridden Uber and she hasn’t in over two years; doesn’t even have the APP on her phone.  Although it pained me to even think about moving after twenty years, I started looking around for a bank that offered everything we use, like mobile and online banking, BillPay, remote deposits, etc. PLUS was willing to pay me to open an account!  You’ve probably all heard radio commercials for Wintrust Bank, but I only heard wealth management and it sounded like a place where they wouldn’t even let me in the door.  Open a checking account with $100 and have direct deposit totaling $500 a month and you’ll get a $300 bonus after a few months.  I walked out with a new debit card, some temporary checks and everything already set up online and on the APP.

If you want another bonus (this one only $200), open a savings account with $15,000 or more and after the three months you get your bonus.  I need to stop back for that one since I don’t normally carry more than $10,000 🙂  PITA is doing the checking account as well – vacation money for Spring Break!

Check out any of the Wintrust branch locations – I used Community Bank of Downers Grove and it was actually faster than driving to First American down the street, which shocked us.  Our wonderful personal banker was Tiffany, who has probably already submitted her resignation 🙂
