O’Hare bumped up from fifth place last year into to a tie for second place with Detroit’s airport, according to the 13th annual study by the nonprofit Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine. Denver International Airport ranked first, and Atlanta’s main airport, the busiest in America, ranked last.

Ranks are based on airport eateries serving at least one plant-based, high-fiber, cholesterol-free entrée as an option. At O’Hare, 85 percent of eateries made the cut.  (bold emphasis mine)

Richard Blais’ Earth & Turf Burger, served at the Flip Burger Boutique in Atlanta, is 50 percent beef, 50 percent mushroom.

A research study led by Amy Myrdal Miller, director of programs and culinary nutrition for the CIA, found that mushrooms can make a nutritious substitute for beef without compromising on taste. Miller had 147 adults sample burgers made with varying combinations of beef and mushrooms and found that a 50-50 blend was ideal. “Mushrooms seem to generate a natural umami (Goddess says umami is a category of taste in food) reaction that makes everything in a dish taste even better than they do on their own,” said Bob Okura, executive corporate chef and head of culinary development at The Cheesecake Factory. National Public Radio/The Salt blog (11/5).

All the news that fits: Marriage isn’t for you

Very nice article from Huffington Post entitled Marriage Isn’t For You.

Having been married only a year and a half, I’ve recently come to the conclusion that marriage isn’t for me.

Now before you start making assumptions, keep reading.

I met my wife in high school when we were 15 years old. We were friends for 10 years until… until we decided no longer wanted to be just friends. I strongly recommend that best friends fall in love. Good times will be had by all.

Nevertheless, falling in love with my best friend did not prevent me from having certain fears and anxieties about getting married. The nearer Kim and I approached the decision to marry, the more I was filled with a paralyzing fear. Was I ready? Was I making the right choice? Was Kim the right person to marry? Would she make me happy?

Then, one fateful night, I shared these thoughts and concerns with my dad.

Perhaps each of us have moments in our lives when it feels like time slows down or the air becomes still and everything around us seems to draw in, marking that moment as one we will never forget.

All the news that fits: Utah woman gives birth to 14-lb baby

UntitledA Utah mom has been shopping for larger diapers after giving birth to a 14-pound baby boy.

Sara Brandon gave birth to her son, Joel Brandon Jr., or “J.J.,” by cesarean section last May and was shocked by his size, especially since her last ultrasound estimated his weight as closer to 11 pounds.

“When they stuck him on the scale he was 14 pounds even,” Brandon told ABCNews.com. “The doctor said it was the biggest baby he had ever delivered.”

The delivery was a bit different from Brandon’s previous birth experience with twin girls. Each girl weighed 4 pounds, and together they still weighed 6 pounds less than J.J.

How to Tell If You’re a Feminist – with flowchart!

Following was lifted from Rebecca Searles, The Social Commentary Editor of The Huffington Post:

I get tired of hearing teen role-models like Kelly Clarkson and Katy Perry misuse and reject the term “feminist.” It perpetuates the myth that feminists are a bunch of bra-burning man-haters, and that’s just not true. Misusing the label and sounding like an idiot isn’t good for anyone. So, I made a simple flowchart to make it easy on you.

cool article about Linda Rondstant’s covering of Mike Nesmith’s (The Monkees) Different Drum

Hey, I didn’t know he wrote this song, either!  Great article with You Tube videos of Nesmith, The Greenbriar Boys original recording and two of Linda Rondstant’s huge hit.

When the red light went on at Hollywood’s Capitol Studios in 1967, singer Linda Ronstadt was scared. There to record “Different Drum”—her first lead-vocal single as a member of the Stone Poneys—Ms. Ronstadt was expecting to sing an acoustic ballad version of the song accompanied by her two bandmates.

Linda Ronstadt (shown in 1968) was caught off guard in the studio when confronted with new musicians and a faster arrangement. Henry Diltz/Corbis

Instead, a new faster arrangement had been written, a rhythm section and string players were brought in to replace the other two Stone Poneys, and Ms. Ronstadt had just seconds to figure out how she was going to phrase the lyrics and make the song work.  Read the entire article with videos here.

Happy All Hallow’s Eve – footage from the Empire State Building

The Empire State Building celebrates Halloween with a light show.As promised, here is the YouTube video of the Empire State Building light and shadows show from earlier this evening – the colors are fantastic, as is the music (songs I actually knew!).

Lighting designer Marc Brickman stated the following immediately following the show:

“My inspiration begins with the music. For the first-ever Halloween light show I approached this project by treating the Empire State Building as the ultimate canvas. Architectural lighting as theatre on the most iconic building in the world.

It’s as if I am painting with light and shadows for the entire world to see and enjoy.”

Empire State Building Realty Trust CEO Tony Malkin stated:

“Empire State Building and Clear Channel’s first-ever Halloween light show comes on the heels of our premier light show to two songs by Alicia Keys and our performance in the Macy’s July 4th fireworks display finale.  For this show, we have a new surprise several months in the making which will bring even more excitement to New York City’s skyline,” said Anthony E. Malkin, Chairman, President and CEO of ESRT.  “ESRT and Clear Channel are thrilled to gift our latest light show performance to our global audience to enjoy and share.”
