All the news that fits: Nuclear waste truck stolen in Mexico – check flea markets

please don't sue me!

Here’s a little bit of Holiday cheer, courtesy of Huff Post World.

A truck carrying nuclear waste was stolen in Mexico earlier this week, Agence France-Presse reported.  The truck was transporting the radioactive isotope cobalt-60 from a hospital in Tijuana to a radioactive waste storage facility when it was taken on Monday, NBC noted.  According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, Mexican authorities are currently conducting a search for the missing truck, and have issued a press release to alert the public.

Cobalt-60, which is primarily used in medical treatments, cannot be utilized in a conventional nuclear weapon; however, it could be added to a “dirty bomb.” Such a device could potentially spread the radioactive material over a wide area.

In a statement, the IAEA cautioned anyone against trying to access the material inside the truck.

“At the time the truck was stolen, the source was properly shielded. However, the source could be extremely dangerous to a person if removed from the shielding, or if it was damaged,” it said.  Exposure to large sources of cobalt-60 can cause skin burns, acute radiation sickness or death, the CDC reports.

The vehicle was stolen from a gas station near Mexico City and is described by local media as a 2.5-ton Volkswagen Worker truck. At the time of this writing, no description of the thieves had been released.

11 Dominicks to become Marianos

Here’s the list of Dominicks stores that will be purchased by Roudy’s (parent company of Mariano’s) sometime within the next few weeks; they will reopen as Mariano’s after a month or two of renovations.

The locations being purchased are:

•    Park Ridge: 1900 S. Cumberland Ave.
•    Western Springs: No. 14 Garden Market Street
•    Chicago: 3145 S. Ashland Ave.
•    Chicago: 2021 W. Chicago Ave.
•    Northfield: 1822 Willow Rd.
•    Westchester: 3020 S. Wolf Rd.
•    Buffalo Grove: 450 Half Day Rd.
•    Chicago: 5201 N. Sheridan Rd.
•    Gurnee: 6655 Grand Ave.
•    Aurora: 3025 E. New York St.
•    Shorewood: 950 Brook Forest Ave.

The Aurora location is actually not too far from me – naturally it’s my least-favorite Dominicks.  Well, no, it’s tied with Danada Square because Danada is coupon Naziland, but the Aurora store always looks at you like your coupons are something entirely new to them...just shoot me now

All the news that fits: Bootstrap restaurant start ups

526981e8e4b0ed5884951144This article appeared in Forbes under Entrepreneurs.  It’s about a chef in Birmingham, Alabama who has now opened his second bootstrap restaurant – says people pay for food, not the $600,000 kitchen. This point can be made on most projects, from clothes to home purchases and remodeling:  If your budget is $XXX, do you really need to spend that much if $XX works?

Birmingham, Ala., chef Chris Dupont opened his first restaurant with $7,000 in the 1990s and last month debuted Tau Poco with an opening budget of just under $13,000. He shares tips for opening an eatery on a tiny budget, starting with tuning out advice about all the things you must have to open and applying affordable upgrades to existing low-cost spaces. “Ultimately, you’ll be graded on the food. Diners do not come back because you put in a $600,000 kitchen — they’re coming to eat the food,” he said.  Here’s the article.

All the news that fits: Homeland Security Food Protection and Defense

Untitled 2The FBI is taking a bigger interest in U.S. food safety, focusing specifically on intentional contamination and spending more resources on tracking incidents, FBI Supervisory Special Agent Thomas Rosato said during a briefing held by the University of Minnesota’s National Center for Food Protection and Defense.

While the FDA and other agencies focus on incidents of foodborne illnesses from produce or other products,  the FBI steps in when when a person or organization tampers with the food supply, for reasons ranging from terrorism to economic motives.

“It starts with an understanding that we are in a fight,” Rosato said. “There are people who would try to harm and terrorize through the food system.”

I wasn’t even aware that we had a Homeland Security Food Protection and Defense Department!  Read the rest of the article here.

All the news that fits: Clothing trends guys hate

o-CLOTHING-GUYS-HATE-570This article appeared in HuffPost Style a few days ago. Love some of the comments…

Peplums, wedge sneakers, maxi skirts — we fashion-forward women love us a good trend. But we often get the creeping feeling men don’t understand our devotion to harem pants and tie-dye rompers quite as much as we’d hope. That is, after all, the founding principle of The Man Repeller.

So we decided to chat with some men in our lives about some of the latest fashion trends that women love. It seems that they don’t appreciate things in exactly the same way we do. Below is a rundown of what they had to say.  Read the complete article – with more pictures! – here.

All the news that fits: wait, Ken is gay????

This first one is a few scenes where a completely delusional Barbie finds out Ken is gay.

slide_297684_2454155_freeWith his perfect blond hair and chiseled features, Ken always seemed to care more about his appearance than about his counterpart, Barbie. The Huffington Post chatted with photographer Dina Goldstein about her latest photo series, “In the Dollhouse,” which shows what really happens behind the plastic walls of Barbie’s dream palace.
