comp tickets to Assistance (soon to be TV series)

assistance-012014Rumored to be inspired by her time spent working as an assistant for Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, Assistance is Leslye Headland’s office comedy for the 21st century. When Nora, an awkward young woman, takes a job as one of Daniel Weisinger’s assistants, the mind-numbing tasks and her boss’s domineering and illogical nature soon threaten her sanity. Best known for her play Bachelorette, which she adapted into a hit Sundance film, Headland wields a take-no-prisoners style of comedy that pushes the limits of how female characters are allowed to act. Comedy star Will Ferrell is set to executive produce a TV series adaptation of Assistance starring Krysten Ritter.  Get comp tickets to Assistance for all performances through mid-March ($4.75 service fee).

February comp tickets to Saint Joan by ShawChicago Theater

saint-joan-temp-2Saint Joan is Shaw at his finest, a masterfully original telling of the Joan of Arc story that mixes comedy and history with the legendary playwright’s uniquely pointed commentary on religion, society and politics. Considered by many to be Shaw’s greatest play, Saint Joan played a major role in the playwright’s 1925 Nobel Prize win. In this concert reading from ShawChicago Theater Company, we meet the Joan of Arc that Shaw believed in: not a saint, witch or madwoman, but a simple farm girl who becomes the catalyst for a united France. Propelled by saintly voices only she can hear, she leads the French forces to defeat the invading English army, only to be accused of heresy and witchcraft in the aftermath of victory.  Get comp tickets to ShawChicago’s February performances at the Ruth Page Center for the Arts.

Comp & discount tickets to The Tennessee Williams Project

unnamed (3)Tennessee Williams is famous for The Glass MenagerieA Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, but he also wrote many lesser-known one-act scripts. These rarely-produced plays will be performed in an evening that focuses on themes like love, connection, isolation and rejection. You’ll get a chance to experience a side of this legendary playwright you’ve likely never seen before while getting a glimpse at both his early work and the bizarre style of his later plays.

Comp tickets to Pygmalian presented by ShawChicago Theater Co.

pygmalian-100113Coinciding with its 20th anniversary, ShawChicago Theater Company presents a staged reading of George Bernard Shaw’s most beloved play, Pygmalion.  This comedy of manners, one of the last century’s most successful plays in any language, tells the story of bedraggled Cockney flower peddler Eliza Doolittle and temperamental linguistics professor Henry Higgins’ efforts to pass her off as a member of the upper class at a garden party. Higgins declares that he can transform Eliza in three months, and pass her off as a duchess, simply by teaching her to speak properly. His success in this hilarious endeavor leads to unexpected complications for both Higgins and Doolittle. Shaw’s comedy is as sharp and insightful today as it was in 1913, asking the question, what makes a lady a lady — the way she behaves, or the way she’s treated?  Get comp tickets for eight performances ($8 service fee on $30 tickets) in October and early November.
