Goldstar’s Skip the Flowers promotions

Rather than trying to drop a hint about a necklace you want or getting something boring and predictable, why not suggest that you and your SO buy tickets.  Tickets to theater, music, sports, dance, spa treatments …. You won’t end up disappointed and you’ll both have fun – possibly even together!  Goldstar has lots of great ideas and most are 50% off.

Actually, they have a lot of family ideas, too, not just for couples.  I’d like to see Barnum because the Broadway cast album they play on Sirius is so enjoyable.

Goldstar: An American Story (Lincoln’s last day)

Chicago favorite Hershey Felder (George Gershwin Alone, Maestro: Leonard Bernstein) returns with his newest theatrical creation, An American Story, performed with a live orchestra. With an original book and score by Felder based on the music of Stephen Foster, An American Story follows Dr. Charles Augustus Leale, the 23-year-old Union Army medic who was the first person to reach the Presidential box at Ford’s Theatre on the night Abraham Lincoln was assassinated, only to be put in charge of the President by Mrs. Lincoln herself. Set in New York City in 1932, the 90-year-old Dr. Leale looks back on the day that changed his life and American history forever in this stunning and culturally significant new work.

Sounds interesting.  Others must agree because four March performances are already sold out.

75% off tickets to Madame Butterfly (set in Mombasa & performed in English)

American Chamber Opera presents their original staging of Puccini’s Madame Butterfly, performed in English and set in Mombasa, Kenya.  This event is in collaboration with Aid for Africa and Opera Moda, with some of the proceeds benefiting the education of women and children in Kenya. This version of the opera follows Pinkerton, an American naval officer leasing a house in Kenya with Butterfly, the African woman he loves.  Faced with the condemnation of his family, colleagues and the clergy — who disapprove of his union with a native — Pinkerton grows weak and abandons his new bride to return to a conventional life. Butterfly is left in poverty, facing life as a single mother. In the end, Pinkerton receives one last chance at redemption to close out this tragic tale of doomed love.  Tickets are for next weekend’s three performances and start at $7.50.

Ideal for kids age 8 or older, Bud, Not Buddy is the story of a young African-American orphan in search of his father. Clues kept in a suitcase lead him to adventures in Depression-era Michigan, where he finds community among a group of jazz musicians and, ultimately, an unexpected sense of home.

50% off Other Desert Cities at The Goodman Theatre

Get half-price tickets to Other Desert Cities, recently one of the hottest tickets on Broadway and a 2012 Tony nominee for Best Play, which comes to Chicago to The Goodman Theatre. This latest play from Pulitzer Prize finalist Jon Robin Baitz is a smart drama filled with serious laughter and repartee that both dazzles and decimates. Christmas is always somewhat surreal in Palm Springs. It’s made even more so this year when Brooke returns home after a long absence to present her conservative parents with a tell-all confessional novel that exposes a pivotal event in the family’s history.  Goldstar has ticket availability through February 9th.

First there was post-modern cyberpunk, then came 19th-century-inspired steampunk, and now the Accidental Shakespeare Company’s first-ever production introduces the world to Alchemy Punk, through the magical world of The Tempest.  As conceived by director Angeli Primlani, Shakespeare’s lyrical play moves to the early 17th century, where scholars and alchemists studied the natural world of wind and water, as well as supernatural creatures like fairies and elves. The story follows Prospero, a duke in exile and master of an enchanted isle where fantastical creatures, mystery, music and romance abound. A shipwreck delivers Prospero’s enemies to the island, and the plot thickens when his beloved daughter falls for the enemy’s son and the scientific, spiritual and political worlds of the time begin to collide.  Tickets are available through March.  This show sounds interesting; wish it was closer than Rogers Park.

Conceived and directed by Artist Director Anthony Moseley, the show is based on interviews and articles with the intention of raising critical questions about segregation, poverty, the media, popular culture and our increasing numbness to it all.
