PSA – Rock the Vote today

The best thing about Election Day?  Tomorrow there’ll be no more robo calls or the current 178 political commercials per hour on the radio – each and every one denigrating the other candidate as being one of Satan’s home boys…

So here’s a couple of things to make you laugh (I seem to have deleted some – sorry), no matter what your political beliefs are, including a short video from Chris Rock on why you should vote for the white candidate (boy, i miss him).

dinner – they had me at bacon

Since it’s cold and crummy today here in Chicagoland, figured I’d make something that not only would use the oven, but be available on other people’s schedules – not an easy assignment.  Decided on mac and cheese…

3 boxes Dreamfields elbow macaroni @ 49¢ each from March deal at Dominicks.
2 packs of the Kraft shredded sharp cheddar twin packs with the Fresh Take bacon bits @ 23¢ each from this week’s Ultra deal.

First I cooked all the pasta and drained it. Into a cast iron enameled pot I tossed two packs of shredded cheese, some smoked sweet paprika, about a half cup of powdered milk and as much water. Slowly let it melt (while stirring occasionally) on indirect heat. When finished I poured the mac in and folded over and over to make certain all the pasta was covered. Then I opened two packs of the Fresh Take and poured it over the top. You can never have too much bacon (says the woman who bought ten packs of OM last night at Ultra!).

Since it’s already cooked, there’s no reason to bake, other than making the top cheese melt and the bacon and crumb topping get nice and toasty – say, covered at about 30 minutes at 325 degrees or so?

more difference between men & women

Another comment involving the inability of men to find anything.  Which explains why they’re always grabbing their crotch:  The paralyzing fear it’s gonna disappear like everything else they can’t find!

“Last evening we did a bonfire and I could see my hubs was cold. He has one of those flapping ear things on one hat, but claims he couldn’t find it. I asked if he looked, which is akin to asking for world peace I know. He claims he did. Later we are hanging chatting and I can still see he’s cold and I ask again, if he actually ‘looked.’ He claims he did, I am thinking this went on a few times. I suddenly had this mental image of the guy standing in front of the refrigerator asking if there’s butter, when the entire thing is lined with butter. So, seeing as I love this man and realize at this moment even if he has looked FOR HIS OWN HAT mind you, that it’s prolly sitting right there. I get up, walk inside and turn on a light by the hallway coat closet and low and behold, it’s like the only fucking thing on the shelf! It sometimes scares me that things are that simple, yet a man simply doesn’t have the skills to find it. Oh and men run this country.  Scary shit there!”

So there you have it – chime in with your own war stories.

Turns out I agree with 89% of the Green Party!!? Take the ISideWith quiz; it’s completely unslanted/unbiased and covers various areas of government, Foreign Policy, Energy, Social Policies, etc. There is also the click option for even more detailed answers, if you’re not comfortable with any of the primary ones.  It’s very quick and makes you think.

This and that pictures

Picked up these nifty hanging holders at IKEA on Saturday. They’re in the kid’s department and sell for $3.99 in your choice of green/blue or red/orange. Saw these in Rachel’s house months ago and lusted for them ever since. I have three sets attached to the back of the basement door, which, as far as I know, has never been closed, so they’re out of sight.  Since they’re mesh pockets it’s very easy to see what spices, herbs and mixes are available (it’s a pain to slog through all the cabinets and end up grabbing salt/pepper).  The top pockets hold speciality salts, one of them applewood-smoked, so now every time I head downstairs I smell bacon…

And this is that awesome Target Beauty Bag that came in today’s mail. I posted about this on October 2nd, so not that long a wait (checked and the link just goes back to the main page now).  It contained my favorite hair care line in the world: Fekkai. i have returned from the dead to continue my haunting

Didja ever have one of those days where you were so completely exhausted that you did what you could, finally turned off the computer, showered, went to bed and turned out the light at 10:43 – then woke up when the alarm turned OFF after delivering bad news for over an hour?  nah, neither have i…

Seriously, I awoke to the dogs doing their pissed-off “Let us outside.  why are we still in here? dammit, mom, get down here!” chorus.  Rather disorienting, I can tell you.  I lay there, trying to figure out just how early it was, since the alarm radio wasn’t on:  after 8, that’s how early it was!  I won’t say I flew out of bed, mainly because I think the Sandman gave me a 2-fer, but I did manage to struggle into the bathroom, opening up PITA’s door to announce it was after 8, she’d missed her bus and to get dressed.  Just another form of “Good morning, sunshine.”

Thank god I’d set the coffee last night, but couldn’t get the IV going, so had to drink it old school (from a cup).  Drove PITA to school, while she ate cereal from a box (hey, I’m a great mom ’cause she always has breakfast before school…and we don’t pass any McDonald’s).  Receptionist took one look at me and announced she’d already signed in PITA for me.

so now i’m back and wondering why this extra-strong coffee isn’t…

why my family makes me nuts – behind door number 2

FirstBorn is, as you may have guessed, my first child.  I knew he would be a boy.  In fact, had the midwife told me I had had a girl, I would have checked for balls anyway…no wait, that’s my mother…

Anyway, they placed him in my arms, we looked at each other and it was one of those magical moments when I could almost read his mind:  “What the heck am I doing with you?” (biological factoid:  babies don’t have their swear gene switched on at birth)

But I digress.  I couldn’t wait until he started talking – then I truly understood the phrase “be careful what you wish for” because it was 24/7:  what he did in preschool, what commercials he saw on tv, what was going on outside.  The original Gladys Kravitz.  I grew more and more frantic as I realized chatty baby did not come with an off switch.  About age 18 he turned into the Original Clam Boy.  I swear, one teensy weensy little comment about getting cancer and burning in hell and they hold it against you forever!  I tried reasoning with him:  You have no life insurance because you don’t insure liabilities (duh!), but that worked as well as 47% of the nation.  In other words, it didn’t.

But FirstBorn is brilliant.  He’s going for a double major in Organic Chemistry and Math and gets great grades with good earning potential (that way he’ll be able to afford a nice nursing home for his mother, not the one where you can smell pee from the parking lot).  He also volunteers as a tutor for underprivileged kids in the hood.  well, that last sentence was slightly embellished.  He tutors underperforming kids in Naperville and they pay him.  What, you thought he was Father Theresa?

For years I figured he was a changeling or maybe adopted and that his real parents would appear one day to claim him, but those dreams have since died.  and yet he lives…

why my family makes me nuts…

I can give examples from all of them, but let’s just start with DH and save FirstBorn and PITA for another time and place (except that PITA, as a teenage diva, has taken to multiple showers/baths each day.  I don’t see that much movement from her, so what’s up with that?)

DH, now…sticks his head in the kitchen door to tell me that we’re almost out of toilet paper.  Seriously, dude?  I have the original Cottonelle stash – – probably from when it was actually made with cotton – and have only added Scott to the mixture.  NO COTTONELLE?!!  “No Cottonelle at all, maybe 10 rolls of Scott and some paper towels, that’s all”  At which point my head kinda flew off my shoulders and I started feverishly searching for deals…you might have noticed my recent Amazon posts.

So yesterday I went into his little Man Cave to assess the situation.  DH claims that my stuff is all over his area – my stuff being toilet paper, paper towels, tissue, wipes…you know, girly things, not manly man stuff.  Started in rearranging the 24-packs of water and the Nestle flavored waters and lo and behold…wait, you’re not gonna believe this…but I found TWO full cases of Cottonelle, ONE full case of Scott toilet paper, ONE full case of Scott paper towels and one half-full case of assorted tp, pt and tissue (more were in the house already).  I immediately called during his guy lunch to share the good news:  Don’t worry, honey, I went in and rearranged all your stuff and found toilet paper and paper towels.  Oh, and I moved all the water so it’s taking up less space.  Want me to start with the beer?  “Uhhhh, thanks, no.  gotta go.  good-bye.”

there is more than one way to skin a cat.  although who’d want a cat skin anyway…

gathering seeds for the DuPage prairie

Spent all morning, into early afternoon, which kind of segued into Mickey D’s (where we got four Club chicken sandwiches, three small fries, two Big Macs and two McFlurries for about $12.

Here are some of the pictures SC took of us collecting seeds (he doubled as seed bag holder).  It’s a cool thing to do (especially when it’s not a community service requirement).
