Oooh, I got my IRS scam call!

imagesI am so excited – got the IRS scam call on my cell and they kindly left a voicemail.  Usually scammers avoid me – for whatever reason – but I have been blessed.  I’ve seen posters at the library about various “IRS” scams.  This is the scam where they have creepy robo voice say that this is the IRS Final Notice before they file a lawsuit.  You are given a number to call (not the number calling…well, let’s face it, they’re probably all spoof numbers), to avoid this lawsuit.  Only thing they didn’t say was have a nice day!

and the day the IRS bothers with phone calls, will be the day we declare all income…

home again, home again…

Well, after that washing machine debacle, it was nice that we had a family outing all planned:  A Day at the Museum of Science and Industry!  PITA bought us a Family Membership on Groupon a couple of months ago – and boy is it a savings over general admission and exhibits prices!  Definitely recommend grabbing the next one that comes along.

We toured the Disney Studio exhibit which started long before Steamboat Willie and ended with clothing from Maleficent!  Spent well over an hour here; concluded with a free lesson in drawing a Disney character (mine was Olaf, but if I didn’t tell you, you would never know).

After that it was a quick tour through the Old Street and ice cream at Finnegan’s Ice Cream Parlor.  Then the IMAX D-Day movie.  I was dragging my heels, thinking it would be a gory mess, but it wasn’t that way at all.  Learned so much about the planning – lots of graphics and more.

Then home the long way – side streets all the way!  Leftovers and watched Highclere Castle, the 5,000 acre estate upon which Downton Abbey is based.  OMG!  Now I really have to watch that show…

hey! They Make crap in America, too!

The story of a 18-month old washing machine that doesn’t.  Thought that by buying Made in America I’d be doing something good – – guess I did, but for GE, not me.  Needs new board because you can’t replace just one relay, apparently.  Since it’s just out of warranty I have to decide whether I want to spend about $150 and get to ride the carousel another 18 months or rip up my ticket now and go for an older, used machine that actually works, doesn’t talk back and doesn’t require an instruction manual to run.

What really sucks is that I don’t run a commercial laundry and frankly (as long-time readers can attest) am not that clean!  75% of the laundry is from PITA trying something on then dumping it in the laundry hamper with the actual dirty clothes.

Now to hunt out Amana and Maytag wringer washers – watch out Armish peeps, the English are coming to grab your stuff!

out of the loop until tomorrow…sorry

So DH installed my hard drive (took hours!); he’s still not thrilled and plans to tweak it slightly tomorrow.  I spent most of the evening installing update upon update, which takes hours, even with a fast internet connection.  Still have to put in all my pages, etc. and passwords, which I’ll start on tomorrow afternoon.

In the meantime, were you all able to grab a boatload of inserts from tomorrow’s Trib?  We’ve still got days to clip, but you’re gonna want to be clipping the Pantene BOGO, and the Febreze coupons.  Actually, any Pantene and Febreze, no matter the insert will be useful.  I’ll keep my eyes open for printables (check under the coupons.com tab because there’s usually no warning before they pop up – and you KNOW they’re gonna be hot!).  If  you have a favorite Jewel store, you might want to drop a word to the store director so the shelves stay full.

Again, sorry about all this, but technology has made our lives so much easier, right?

Later, gator…

A bad hard drive, future therapy & stuff to run out and buy

Where have you been the past day or so I hope you’re wondering (really, really hope).  A few months ago my computer started giving me attitude, and when I ran diagnostics it suggested final rites.  And I know it’s the hard drive because diagnostics always had some issue with sectors or vectors AND I was unable to upgrade to the newest OS because of said sector/vector issues.  It told me that it was just WAITING TO FAIL.  So I bought a new hard drive – sitting nice and safe on the table even as i type – and prepared to wait it out…because that’s what I thought you did.  Until I got the grey screen of death last night while DH and PITA were at a play.  Yes, the man who refused to ever see plays with me has now seen three in a row with PITA (including two musicals!).  He decides this morning that since I found my original OS discs (no more laughing about my never throwing out anything, yah hear?) he will install the hard drive tomorrow (god bless YouTube).
I’ve been trying to work using my laptop, which was originally meant to augment my desktop, but then I kinda forgot to add all my links and passwords and bookmarkerlets and it really sucked at mah jong…so I decided today might be better spent hunting down MG217 and all at Walgreens and picking up Colgate kids toothpaste at Target (there will be a 50¢ coupon in Sunday’s paper, so buy and post-redeem…sigh…every 3 earns you a $5 gift card, so buy six, use four coupons and the Target $5 gift card coupon and, by buying the $2.79 tubes you spend $16.74, less the $15 in gift cards less the $2 in coupons..oh, right, it’s a MM!)
So I’m out hunting deals for a couple of hours.  Just pulled into the driveway (it’s already dark – boo!) when my phone rings.  PITA, asking when I’m coming back because she’s scared.  Not yet.  I quietly go up the back porch and burst into the kitchen yelling AHHH!  She screams.  A wonderful future therapy moment shared.  Turns out FirstBorn was home all along so I don’t really understand the scared part.  Then she yelled up later (I was in the tub ignoring her) that there were RATS in the basement.  RATS?  Well something LARGE.  ’cause she HEARD something.
Yeah, large sewer rats would be MY first thought, too.  Speaking of water, though, got the new water/sewer bill today – $100 for two months!  Up $20 from the previous one!  We don’t have a pool, don’t water the lawn, I’m not that clean, and I seriously doubt that watering the bushes that DH planted used a thousand more gallons of water.  OMG!  It’s cause I do too much laundry~must cut back.
Product recommendation for which I get squat (but am open to baskets of cash and/or more products):
Got a bag of samples of Dove sulfate-free shampoos and conditioners and Nexxus products.  Used the Dove last night and tonight and I have to say that my hair is super soft.  Yesterday I used too much shampoo, reasoning that it would probably be like Avalon and not suds up at all – – I was wrong.  Looked like a poodle.  Smells nice, kinda pear-y.

Sunday’s inserts (10/5)

20141003_074419.jpg
Great inserts this week – I love those single-page Olay ones! Make sure you check your papers wherever you buy them and make sure you get all inserts.

I’m baaaack!

A transformer near our house blew up last night about 9 – big boom and then blackout. PITA screamed. See, this is why they make glow-in-the-dark nail polish! I grabbed the nearest flashlight and went down to light my oil lamps…yes, I’m prepared! FirstBorn left to go driving around with a friend because “there’s nothing to do here” which translates to no internet. Gave PITA a large flashlight (not crazy enough to give her an oil lamp!) and lay in bed reading and eating potato chips by the light of an oil lamp – just like Abe Lincoln. Which totally sucked and I can see why he chose zombie killing as a hobby.

Power wasn’t restored until about 10:30 which necessitated going around the house and turning off all the lights and fans that were going and then rebooting all computers and resetting the router. modern technology makes life so damned easy…

And if you really want to enjoy a little taste of death, try calling ComEd for outage updates…

Note:  If you are smart, you’ll have a corded phone plugged in somewhere.  I have a plain one but I need to buy one with caller ID like this $11.62 AT&T cheapie on Amazon.  Because your cell phones are not going to be sufficient, they’ll blow through their battery and/or you’ll have forgotten to charge them…or all the above.  Voice of experience here.
