The story of a 18-month old washing machine that doesn’t. Thought that by buying Made in America I’d be doing something good – – guess I did, but for GE, not me. Needs new board because you can’t replace just one relay, apparently. Since it’s just out of warranty I have to decide whether I want to spend about $150 and get to ride the carousel another 18 months or rip up my ticket now and go for an older, used machine that actually works, doesn’t talk back and doesn’t require an instruction manual to run.
What really sucks is that I don’t run a commercial laundry and frankly (as long-time readers can attest) am not that clean! 75% of the laundry is from PITA trying something on then dumping it in the laundry hamper with the actual dirty clothes.
Now to hunt out Amana and Maytag wringer washers – watch out Armish peeps, the English are coming to grab your stuff!
Did you get those front loaders?! And I have my top load regular plain Maytag from 12 years ago and they work perfectly! My mother in law has gone through FOUR front loaders in that time and it’s only two people! Good luck Goddess!
My “old” machine was a 7 year old top-loader Maytag which worked PERFECTLY – until it met up with the flood. This was a GE top-loader with a large capacity tub and the least bells & whistles possible. The repair guy suggested I look for a 3-5 year old Maytag or Whirlpool since the cost to replace the board (one relay gone means the entire board has to go) and labor charge would be what you’d pay for an older machine that would probably last at least TWO YEARS. I will NEVER again buy a GE…well, expect for all those free bulbs at Target…I mean, I’m not stupid about that!
That sucks! I knew you replaced it after the flood… do I dare ask how you came out after all that was said and done?!?!

Yes, you may dare: Probably a good $50K in the hole – at least – from things that were not covered because flood insurance is not the same as homeowners when it comes to valuation. Still waiting for workers to actually show up when scheduled for even an inspection (it’s unbelievable how many don’t seem to care at all about following up!). So maybe I’m gonna have to rope DH and FirstBorn into the actual work stuff. Other than that, we’re all doing okay since it’s livable here and we have our health. gawd that sounds mawkish!
That blows! I’m so sorry. My brother has a house on the Grand River and he learned the same fate. His was closer to 30K. No FEMA, nothing. His house hasn’t had a flood in 100 years, until he bought it. We have sand bagged twice as the water rose. So fast the last time, there wasn’t an option. He stood in his office with two feet of water.

Doing the Wilma Flintstone routine on only the dog pee pads – found a way online for people without electricity…filled my laundry tub with hot water and detergent, then use a toilet plunger to agitate the items up and down, just like a machine. Drain the soapy water and fill with hot rinse water and do the same. Wring and shove in dryer and go up for a drink. well, that’s my improved model…Clothes are piling up but supposed to have delivery of Maytag on Wednesday and will post.
