Way-back posts (8/2010)

These popped up from 2010 and I had to chuckle when I remembered how sweet they were.  Driving back with PITA in her booster seat getting bopped on the head by toilet paper with every turn 🙂

Read online about Wags clearancing the Cottenelles for a buck or less. Well, since I just happened to have a whole load of $1 coupons, why not? Took a drive and we’re set for a couple of years. Well, I hope we’re set, since we’re talking 168 packages. The asst mgr was so excited she wanted to print out a duplicate receipt to post on the wall, showing people how you can save shopping at Walgreens.  Oh, how much did I spend?  Less than $12.

[also from 8/2010, about a Jewel sale on Gold Peak tea] As well you might ask.  This was another strange deal…..Coca Cola product, for which I had fifty cent coupons.  With a BOGO, it ended up costing me low tax, or two cents a bottle. Lost count after 190 bottles. People are starting to refer to my Beverage Basement.

Victoria’s Revenge

What’s a teenager to do when she suddenly finds herself in serious financial trouble and can’t pay up?

She just might turn to her mother for assistance. Especially if a court orders Mom to help out.

That’s what happened in Indiana this week, as convicted mother-daughter coupon scammers were ordered to jointly pay more than $100,000 to Victoria’s Secret. And if they don’t come up with the cash within a year, they could end up behind bars.  Read more about these two goofs here.

Sweat to save – couponing in the heat

If you’ve ever complained that it’s hard to get any work done when your office is too cold, it’s not your imagination. According to a new study, not only are we more productive in warmer temperatures – we’re better couponers, too.

“Role of Ambient Temperature in Influencing Willingness to Pay in Auctions and Negotiations” appears in the most recent edition of the Journal of Marketing. The study’s authors find that the hotter it is, the better we are at shopping, and saving.  Read the entire article here.

jetBlue Fall Sale – travel to 11/20

jetBlue’s Fall Runway Sale means you can get your tickets now instead of the last minute and still have plenty of time to plan.  Chicago only has one destination, but if you live on either of the coasts, the world is your (savings) oyster!

The APP that kept on giving: 3,000+ times

Florida police are looking for a man who got his money’s worth out of a single cigarette coupon – by scanning it more than 3,000 times over a two-week period to get more than $8,000 worth of snacks, drinks and lottery tickets for free. Here’s the Coupons in the News story.

Fewer coupons = less coupon use – duh

If you’re discouraged about the lack of good coupons lately, you’re not alone. A major coupon provider isn’t too thrilled about it either.

Coupons.com owner Quotient Technology is feeling the effects of manufacturers’ recent shift away from offering plentiful coupons. Due in large part to three major manufacturers cutting back on the number of printable and digital coupons they offer via Coupons.com, Quotient this week forecast weaker earnings for the rest of the year, and saw its stock price sink by nearly 30% yesterday as a result.

It’s a real-world consequence of what the statistics have been telling us lately.  Coupons in the News article here.

the APP is dead – long live the text?

How many savings apps have you downloaded and used for a while, then you either got bored with them, or decided the deals weren’t good enough, and eventually forgot you still had the apps at all?

If that’s happened to you, you’re not alone. According to a new report, “the era of the app may be coming to an end.” Vibes’ newest annual U.S. Mobile Consumer Report says “consumers delete apps at such a dizzying pace that brands may not want to rely on that mode of engagement for mobile shopping deals for much longer.”  Here’s the Coupons in the News article – make your own decision.

Disney+ streaming will be $12.99

Disney’s upcoming streaming service Disney+ will be available as a $12.99 monthly bundle with ESPN+ and ad-supported Hulu.  Honestly, I have to think there’s an eventual limit to how much people will pay for all these streaming services.  Here’s the entire story here.
