Vegas bye-bye: no glitter, no glitz, no way

Here’s a buttload (pun intended) selection of the 85 pix texted me by FirstBorn and honestly, I said to PITA we should go if only to visit New York, New York ’cause the real place is gonna be dead for at least the rest of the year (we would be hitting the pool every day and riding the monorail, but taking Uber!).  Craps tables are restricted to six players, three to a side, every other slot was turned off, similar player limits on all table games as well.  Only employees required to wear masks and less than 10% of the tourists did. This is his friend; at least the “cops” wore masks 🙂  I have to say I don’t know most of these places, except for the ones marked Flamingo and the New York, New York casino. I do know that the cannabis dispensary snacks are rather pricey – over $20 for a chocolate bar.  Hell, I’ll buy BOGO Pixies for that bit of cash and probably enjoy them more.  See if you recognize the weird displays ’cause I sure haven’t a clue.  Most days it was over 100°, but Uber drivers said that wasn’t a problem because you didn’t really feel that dry heat until it hit 118°.  Yeah, tell that chicken in the oven all about dry heat.

We’re tired of paying full price!

When are we ever going to see coupons for toilet paper or paper towels again? When are we going to be able to stock up on discounted pantry staples like pasta or canned soup like we used to?

As coronavirus lockdowns ease, and once-empty store shelves are more fully stocked again, grocery shopping is starting to get back to normal. And just in time, too, because now that economists have declared that we’re officially in a recession, the coupons and sales we were accustomed to seeing before the coronavirus pandemic, are going to be more important than ever for cash-strapped shoppers.  Here’s the Coupons in the News article.

Safest Grocery Stores to Shop?

Remember when you’d choose a place to grocery shop based on which store had the best sales and the friendlier coupon policy?

Those were the days. These days, coupons and deals have largely taken a back seat to safety and social distancing. And some stores are doing a much better job than others.  Here’s the entire Coupons in the News article.  Save your eyes, ’cause the surveys all love Costco and H E B, but if you don’t have a membership to one or live in a state with the other, it really depends on the store and how well they follow rules and guidelines.

Price-gouging toilet paper lawsuit

First, it was masks and hand sanitizers. Then it was eggs. Now, a retailer is being accused of price-gouging during the coronavirus pandemic by charging too much for toilet paper.

A California woman has filed a federal lawsuit against Albertsons, the owner of the Safeway supermarket chain. She accuses the retailer of overcharging its customers for toilet paper, which became a hot commodity in the early days of the coronavirus crisis.  Entire Coupons in the News article here.

Got jet skis? Get your diploma

Students from Somerset Island Prep charter high school in Key West replaced the typical auditorium and stage with clear water, some sun and jet skis.  Here’s a fun article in CNN about one school’s novel way to celebrate graduation this year.

FirstBorn does Viva Las Vegas again

And once again FirstBorn has braved the world outside his bedroom to experience the glitter and glitz of Sin City.  I’ll be posting some photos here and more on FB, showing changes all over.  His Southwest flight was packed – middle seats kept empty; somehow that wouldn’t inspire great confidence, but then you wouldn’t see me heading out to Vegas either :).  Yesterday’s temp was 108°, but his Uber drivers were pretty unanimous that you don’t really notice it until it hits 118°.  wtf!   I hate snow and ice, but at least we have a reliable source of water in Chicago – good luck with that pond formerly known as Lake Mead.  Here you see the statue in front of Caesars Palace wearing a gold face mask.

Only including shots of his room at the Flamingo because he was so surprised by all the USB charging ports everywhere, including in all the light fixtures.  Very smart.

Bye-bye BI-LO

It’s not the most storied or beloved grocery chain around, but BI-LO has been a survivor for the past six decades, living through two bankruptcies and persevering through at least two attempts by its owner to sell off the entire chain. But now, the owner of the southern grocer says it’s finally time to say an official goodbye to BI-LO.

Owner Southeastern Grocers announced yesterday a “strategic decision to no longer operate stores under the BI-LO banner,” as part of “a series of transactions that will ensure the company continues to thrive and support the long-term growth of its core banners,” namely its other holdings Winn-Dixie, Harveys Supermarket and the Hispanic-focused South Florida chain Fresco y Más.  Here’s the Coupons in the News article if this deal will impact your shopping.
