We switched to Ooma a couple of years ago; I only wish we’d done it sooner.  The sound quality is better than from our landline (no static) and the ability to add hundreds of numbers to my blacklist is a bonus.  I get all the bells and whistles (call-waiting ID, etc.) but pay very little.  Buy and get their basic package – which still give you plenty – and only pay the monthly tax bill.  You can also use your same cordless phones.
