Update: Rachel emailed me that she learned the Scott catalina is not going to be run the same as the last time. This time you get a lousy buck for every two product categories you buy. Well, let’s just camp out at Jewel until this one breaks, okay? Seriously, between these pitiful promotions and the 40¢ for two item coupons, I’m starting to think I’m in the 60’s.
I ran into a reader today who was waiting for the Scott paper catalina to start on the 5th, ’cause she really needs paper towels…remember that post from last Sunday? The one with the picture of the newest Jewel booklet A Winter’s Feast (prime rib on the cover)? The one that has a $1 off any Homelife cleaning product? Coming back to you now?
Well, I just picked up eight of the paper towels (along with something from the olive bar – shaddup) and a few more coupon booklets. Both the sale and the booklet dates are through the end of December, so lots of free towels in our future.
The Scott catalina promotion that starts on Thursday (I believe) is the same one that ran last May: Buy 1 out of different categories and get a $1 OYNO for each category. In other words, buy one tp and one pt and get a $2 cat; buy one tp, one pt and one Naturals wipes ($1/2 coupon in 11/13 s) and get back $3. There is a $2 off two Scott products here in CouponNetwork, but that’s it for coupons at this time. When I find out the Scott prices (if they’re going on sale), I’ll post some scenarios.
Could you also do the go to customer service run like with Scott? I read on Mum that you only get $1 for buying 2 this round.
Grrr
Of course you can. It’s probably easier to run it at Scot since you won’t be tying up a cashier for a long period of time. Honestly, though, with the deal being only $1 for two categories? Not my idea of a deal at all. Get your free paper towels from Jewel Homelife through the end of December and I’ll sell you some nasty Scott tp from my stockpile. It’s only a treat if you’re used to Small Steps.
Ok cool. A few small steps from sand paper…yeah…she uses that too.
I’m going to need to stock up on those books. I wonder if Rebecca will be free to help me run this one? 😉
Oh, don’t be mean – she would look at the coupon and say you aren’t buying the pictured items. Then customer service would come over and run it through…until the next time.
She’s really very nice, but not the…well, you know the rest.
Why don’t you hit up the Ultras for Small Steps? They’ve had them in the papers quite often – I have probably a few hundred (which I am NOT going to sit around and clip).
You should raffle off those Marcal coupons, and people have to clip themselves. Free TP!
Oh sure, and get sued for butt rash?
sure, if you can find any of the books..no free towels for me!
Seriously? The Lisle Jewel has a large cardboard display near SCOT and customer service – I left a few (insert pat on back here). Check other stores as you drive by them. Maybe other readers could let us know where they are being placed?
Are these still on sale?
Roosevelt Road is my ‘home’ Jewel, and I agree with LauraC that this is a good Jewel for the couponer. People leave behind a lot of catalinas there, too. Seems like at least one good one shows up in my cart or is left behind at the self check each time I go. There are still quite a few of the roast beef winter feast books (and the books of liquor rebates, mostly expired) in displays in produce, the deli, and hanging on clips at the end caps, fwiw. It draws a lot of college students…I sometimes have to fight my way through little throngs of them in front of the Hot Pockets section of the freezer case….
But yea, never had an issue couponing there, Catalina machines treat me pretty well, usually has the stuff I need to make a deal work, have even drawn a little crowd of people cheering for my deals. LOL.
Disadvantages: pretty small, seems to be constantly getting stocked so be ready to squeeze past pallets, almost never has any scratch/dent, clearance, or other special markdown section, alcohol is upstairs which is very inconvenient (not sure it is even possible to do deals that combine food and alcohol purchases). But there is a TJ’s across the street, so who wants Jewel wine anyway :)?
Contrast that mostly friendly environ to the Dominick’s just down the road, where they treated my couponing like criminal activity for no reason….
I am sure there are locations where it’s the opposite. Amazing how much a difference the store management can make.
Yes the paper towels are on sale! Not all of the shelf tags have been updated. I spent a whopping 68 cents at Jewel this morning and ended up with 2 of the Cure 81 hams, 1 everyday essentials pasta, 1 homelife paper towels and a loaf of jewel sour dough bread. I was able to rangle the $5.00 off of $25.00 coupon so that’s part of how I got it at 68 cents vereses $5.68. I love the Jewel downtown where people don’t coupon! Stuff is in stock and they tend to have lots of coupon booklets. Heck the lady in front of me didn’t even want her game pieces…..
Dear gods, if I ever heard of a reason for a road trip, this is it!
I just got a 25 cent coupon for one of those damn hams!!!
I got a couple of those at the beginning of the contest and that was my big laugh of the day – a whole friggin’ 25 cents! Of course, that was before they had the other coupons, but still. Does Supervalu use marketing ideas and values stolen from Mad Men’s era?
Went back at lunch time. My bill was 70 cents this time. Same items as above just different bread. Used the $1.00 culinary circle bread coupon that was emailed.
The paper towels are not “cleaning products” at the Countryside Jewel. Three cashiers and one customer service person decided that they were paper products. I HATE Jewel.
If you wipe the floor with a cashier’s ass, does that make it a cleaning product? just wondering…
I have searched everywhere for this coupon. I spent my time before work, and was late, trying to find it. I looked in the holiday coupon booklet and the regular coupon booklet they have. All I saw was one for $1 off of Homelife trash bags. 3 associates had no idea what I was talking about either. I swear, I will never disagree with anybody who says that couponing is too difficult / time consuming.
On the plus side, I picked up the envelope, thanks!
The $1 Homelife coupon says cleaning products. The paper towels are pictured on the same page with the coupon. We use paper towels to clean, not trash bags. Hope you picked up lots of booklets.
Found it. I kept looking through the wrong booklet multiple times, and only went through the other one once. It’s in the glossy booklet, not the “paper” one.
Anyways, although I don’t care, I think that’s kinda shady on couponers’ part to say that entails paper towels. Does the register beep when you use it? Yes, it’s a cleaning product, but so is water, baking soda, lemon juice, vinegar, napkins, etc.
If you read the page that the coupon is on, it specifically calls out paper towels. I would agree if it didn’t say that, but does call it out as a cleaning product. And no the coupon does not beep.
Well then what’s the problem? From what I read it sounded like a gray area.
Justin, you’ll find that sometimes there is no good reason why a cashier doesn’t want to take your coupons – they just dislike people using more than, say, one or two per $100 order. I was actually shocked at a very coupon-friendly Wags store when the cashier really didn’t want to use the Mars IPs on the Snickers Nutcracker – she said the coupon was for M&M candy. I pointed out it was the same coupon as last year and the company is Mars! She said she didn’t think they should have taken them last year either. Mind you, she did take them and probably only spoke up to me because she knows how many coupons I use, but really now! That’s not even the slightest grey area there!
Ya, gotta wait for a gray area to insult you. However, if you rolled up to the register with 100 air fresheners, all free with coupons, I’d something to you as well though.
See this post where I price-matched the DG ad at Wmart and then picked up a few hundred of the Air Wick sprays for what was that? Oh, right. COUPONS and tax.

So I went into the Lisle Jewel after work, tossed a whole pile of those booklets in the cart, as well as 40 rolls of paper towels. They called the store manager because she said it’s “1 per customer”, and she kept leaving out the “per transaction” part. The manager left it up to the person who called, so if she hated couponers, she could have shut me down.
Each transaction required the self-checkout person to come over, swipe their card, and insert the coupon. It took about an hour. Oh, and the oddest thing, I wasn’t charged tax, so I didn’t pay a single cent for the whole lot.
Aside from the usual looks and questions, I heard one guy say that I didn’t have any spirit.
Oh, and I accidentally cleared the shelf. I thought there were tons, but I didn’t notice that there are not just the regular rolls, but big rolls and even Halloween rolls, of which some ended up in my cart accidentally, so when I went to swap them for the right ones, I noticed I took them all.
Of course you weren’t charged any tax – you were using a store coupon. I keep explaining this to people, but in IL mfr coupons are treated as a form of cash and you are taxed on the entire amount. Store coupons reduce the price of the item and you are charged on the balance. In this case it’s zero – same with the Target clearance jeans that were $4.98 and we used the $5 Target store coupons to get lots of free jeans.
And in the future, it’s better to only do a few of these towels at a time. I even stopped because the Scott deal makes everything so cheap and I want Jewel to appreciate my business (since they’re getting completely reimbursed by Scott for that deal).
Makes sense about the store coupon; they’re lowering the price of the item for you, not a coupon, in a way.
I did this at peak shopping time too, my bad, but the problem is I don’t run around town like you do. I’m lazy. I go to Jewel like twice a month. Walgreens, only when there’s a really good deal. Walmart, only when I need stuff. I basically wait til I have a list of things I need and/or a list of deals. That’s why I miss out on so many deals, because I won’t go out just to do one deal worth $3.
They hated me, but I thanked them for their patience.
Good that you thanked them, but you have to learn how to shop smarter. You don’t wait until you have a list of stuff to get. Start driving a circuit and stop along that route – run in for a few items and then off to the next store on your way to somewhere else. You’d be amazed at how quickly you can run these deals. I don’t spend that much time and there have been weeks when I shopped Jewel maybe one time (’cause the deal sucked). And quite often I run the deals only to be able to post and show everyone what’s available, not necessarily what I needed personally.
