Posts from a reader – glass 1/2 full or 1/2 empty? You decide…

I received this post earlier, but wanted to clear posting this with her.  I think it’s funny because every time something goes wrong in our lives we adapt and say It’s not so bad. At some point though, we have to wake up and smell the coffee…

I am learning to appreciate every single thing in my life.  Those little tiny things that make such a difference in our lives that we just take for granted. I have this huge laundry list of stuff that is broken.  It started with the pool heater, before the holiday.  Not that big of a deal. It is the end of the season, so we can live without the heat.  Oh, except the pool cover collapsed this past winter, and would you believe the pool places are too busy to even come out to measure it to replace the cover??? I get the pleasure of looking at the acorns dropping by the dozen into the sub zero temperatures of that water, AND there is no way my body is going into it to fetch them out!!!  Again, not that big of a deal.  So we are going to keep cycling the pool so that it keeps it clean, somewhat.  It is bleeding off some of the water, so I grab the hose and start filling the pool.  When the water is at an acceptable level, I ask Miss 14 year old to please turn it off. She returns with a bewildered look and says simply, “I can’t turn the hose off.”  What?!  So, I paddle on back there and sure enough, I literally can’t turn the hose off. So, we kink the hose and put on a sprinkler to water the lawn.  Multitaskers that we are.  My darling husband comes home and tells me he has a surprise for me.  I told him I had one for him as well!  He hands me this beautiful white chocolate truffle, my favorite. I request he changed out of his suit before I tell him my surprise.  Needless to say, I enjoyed mine more.  He did turn it off with some tools, but it is currently inoperable.  No biggie again, right?!

So, next day, my dishwasher stops working.  And it turns out, it really doesn’t bother me that much to hand wash dishes.  Of course, if you have seen how my two guys cook, you would know that’s a pretty broad statement!  And, of course, you can imagine how the clutter in my sink is just about sending my OCD into orbit…
I believe I didn’t mention my computer died.  Which in and of itself isn’t so bad either.  I had no concept how convenient that stinking thing was or really how much time I wasted on it either.  Bittersweet, really. (I am on my husband’s laptop now… but the fact it’s here would ruin the upcoming story…)
So, glass half FULL is my motto still. Optimism. I am determined to enjoy the last of the summer and the girls being home!  (Even if the house is falling apart…) We have spent so many wonderful days together this past summer.  I know the days are numbered on how long they really will even hang out with us still.  We need to enjoy it while it’s still acceptable (???) to want to be around us. We have such amazing girls and I love & enjoy their little personalities!
Next day… All this dish washing is not such a good thing for the sink.  Sink is leaking.  So, I do the prudent thing and grab a bucket and put it under the leak. Temporary fix, but really I am female. Let’s take an inventory so far…  Computer broke. Check. Dishwasher broke. Check. Pool heater broke. Check. Hose in back broke. Check.  Sink leaks. Check. So far that’s a lot of water, no???
Next day, you will NEVER guess what happens?!  My sweet wonderful husband crawls back into bed in the morning and snuggles with me, he whispers that he loves me. Almost the most perfect way to wake up!  Then he snuggles closer and says, “Bad news… the water isn’t working.”  Glass half full baby!  The sink isn’t leaking now!
The water came back on, but it continued to work sporadically.  We have a nice couple of guys here now, right out the window, trimming the branches so they can yank the pump and make the water work.  I feel shameful not to realize how amazing and lucky that we have the luxury of running water!!!  GLASS HALF FULL!
I am laughing just re-reading this!  It really is funny, especially for others!!!  I hope you get a laugh out of my disastrous Labor Day weekend/week.
So for today…  Remember to always see the glass half full. It is so much easier to laugh, than to cry.  AND, of course there is always someone worse off than you, so today, be grateful for your toilet actually flushing!
Have a marvelous Monday!
