Over the years I’ve read about the wonderful world of vinegar and how it can be used for cleaning practically everything. Yes, it makes a great window cleaner, dyes Easter eggs fine and I’m sure that using it on kitchen counters is also good (I’ve even used it in homemade wipes).
I also know that fabric softener coats towels, clothes – heck, anything you wash – so I’d been omitting it on clothes that went on the line. But I started pouring white vinegar in the liquid softener section about two weeks ago and was amazed at how soft and thirsty the towels came out, along with pretty much everything. The slight vinegar smell I noticed when things came out of the washer was entirely gone after the dry cycle.
A couple of nights ago I broke it to DH: Have you noticed how much fluffier and more absorbent the towels are over the past couple of weeks with my new fabric softener? (He obviously hasn’t noticed, but plays along). And how do you like the smell? (He takes a towel and says he doesn’t smell anything.) At this point you spring the trap and tell him you switched to white vinegar instead of fabric softener a couple of weeks ago.
He’s stuck now, cause he’s already admitted there isn’t any smell and he’s been using towels and wearing clothing softened with vinegar. so now i need to sell my Bounty stockpile…
Oh, and I used the 75¢ EE coupons from today’s inserts to get them each for 24¢ or 96¢ a gallon (gallons are $1.99 or $1.75 after coupon).
Use white vinegar to “descale your coffee maker”–
after using you will need to run through 2 to 3 pots of clear water.
Holy vinegar! I am currently boiling water and splashing it down my drains! We must be on the same wavelink! I put in about a half cup of baking soda, then a half cup of white vinegar, then dump down a huge pot of boiling water. I should do it monthly for my septic system, but it’s closer to every other. I have lived here for 12 years and never had a problem with drains or septic. (And have 5 girls with super long thick hair@!!!)
I also use vinegar and baking soda to clean tons of things. I rarely use chemicals… even my oven, as I hate oven cleaner smells. I heard that’s the most toxic chemical ever! I use a paste of baking soda, dishsoap, water, and a sprinkle of lemon juice. Spread a thick layer on the entire oven, let it sit overnight, then just wipe. Sucker looks brand new!
I have also done the vinegar in the laundry, but I could smell it still. I may try it again now that you suggested it though! Happy Monday!
