Jeweless

Since I was on Butterfield anyway, decided to keep on driving west and hit the 24 hr. Jewel at Danada Square.  I’d been hearing about some deals with the OYNOs that sounded sweet, but weren’t.  I’ll explain…

The Tyson prepared meats packages are part of the cat promotion, but you have to buy 2 packages to get the $2 cat.  Even with the peelies for the puny 4-packs of Kings sweet rolls, you’re talking $3.99 x 2, or $7.98 less the $2 cat.  Sorry, but these are only about a pound each and you’d need a hell of a lot of filler – potatoes, rice, noodles – before you could feed a family of any size.  Now, as someone pointed out to me, if you are single and dislike or are tired of frozen meals and don’t have a lot of time or desire to cook, well, then this is a nice deal.  It would be nicer with coupons, but it is what it is…

Since I was there anyway, I decided to liberate some wts.  Noticed that there were full tearpads on the Tostitos display and wts taped to the Budweiser display.  The fact that they expired yesterday did not escape my notice.  I was able to get a few (and I actually mean that) beer tags, then decided to pick up the Johnsonville brats for the $1 cat.  I had a wt for $3 off any Johnsonville brats or other sausage and a previous $1 cat, so figured I would pay low tax.  I told the self scan woman that the tearpads of coupons on the Tostitos display were expired.  She first said that they would still accept them.  Apparently the look I gave her was enough to make her go and take them down and then go over to the beer display and remove those as well.  When I scanned my sausages and hit the “coupons” button, self scan lady read the wt and said I needed to buy beer to use it because it’s not like some of the other coupons that say no alcohol purchase required.  I said that Illinois law prohibits the purchase of alcohol as a requirement of coupon use and to call the manager;  she replied that she was the manager.  I also told her that the information was directly from Jewel corporate in the Tribune and the two cs women both said that they never got any information from corporate and they would have about this.  Since I never engage in a pissing match (and I don’t want to imply that they were being mean in the least), I said to cancel the transaction and left.  Well, I’ll pick up the sausage at my Jewel, where they know Jewel policies.  But at least I gots me more wts!

  1. I have been having a problem with x2 Jewel’s up north where I live. They would not let me use the $3 Johnsville/Bud coupon b/c it’s not a manf. coupon but a Jewel coupon. I need a little guidance here, help please!

    • Wts come in both store and mfr varieties. I don’t use a lot of store wts because I’m not certain how/if Jewel, in this case, gets reimbursed. I’ve been in contact with some people who are really using this promo as a stock up deal, since after the OYNO, the brats are free. Perhaps you should ask the customer service manager (if you have a good relationship with her/him) why they are differentiating between store and mfr coupons. Conversely, you could drive down here and hit both the Lisle Jewel and Wags!

      • I just sent you an email on this. This whole “no beer purchase required” coupon thing is new to me……..okay, its supposed to be new to a newbie but you get the point :). Can I get a quick 101? Is IL a “no beer purchase required” state by law? And there’s a deal right now at Jewel? ? What is Wts?

      • If the Lisle Jewel is truly consistantly taking WT’s -I am driving down tomorrow.-I’ve had it with the craziness of today we are, tomorrow we may take some,-or not. I started having flashbacks of being at Dom’s!

  2. Thanks for the heads up. I was going to go there to get brats on Monday. Now I won’t and will take a drive. This Jewel is hit or miss with WT’s and Coupons. You should call corporate, I get tired of doing it.

  3. You may not know, but up until the Danada area was built in the late 80’s/ early 90’s Wheaton was a dry town. You could not buy ANY booze in Wheaton (with one grandfathered exception on the north side). This is why I think the Wheaton stores are really picky about anything booze related. That’s what happens in the town famous for having the most churches!

    • OK, that’s your Jewel theory; what’s your take on the Dominicks across the streeet? So self-righteous that they would originally refuse to take any coupons on a Sunday and somehow it became more convenient to stretch that policy out the whole week? But convenient and Dominicks in the same sentence just sounds wrong.

  4. On page 3 of the Jewel Coupon Policy, it states: “Illinois/Iowa: Liquor coupons that state they are redeemable on a purchase of liquor and a non-alcoholic item are redeemed without the customer having to purchase the liquor item, however, some restrictions may apply when printed on the coupon (e.g. “One coupon per customer”).

I carry the printed coupon policy with me and have used it a couple of times. It always gets the job done!

    • Ooh, excellent catch! Here is the section of Jewel’s coupon policy dealing with what we consider wine tags:

      Coupon Acceptance Information:
      Manufacturer Coupons:
Buy 1 Get One Free and Cents off coupons. A customer may use a B1G1Free manufacturer coupon and a manufacturer cents off coupon on the one item that is being purchased as long as the coupons do not exceed the price of the item. (e.g. customer purchases 2 cans of Bush’s Beans, they have a B1G1Free manufacturer coupons and present a $1 off coupon, as long as the price of the 2 cans of beans exceed a $1 both coupons may be redeemed).
A coupon can NOT exceed the price of the item.
A coupon value can NOT be altered.
Illinois/Iowa: Liquor Coupons that state they are redeemable on a purchase of liquor and a non-alcoholic item are redeemed without the customer having to purchase the liquor item, however, some restrictions may apply when printed on the coupon (e.g.”One coupon per customer”).
      (italics mine)
Indiana: Liquor Coupons are NOT to be accepted – No coupons allowed for liquor purchases.

As you can see, people in Indiana are screwed. well, in more ways than one.

      • I cheated and pulled it from Jill Cataldo’s site. If you download the pdf file, it is the Jewel corporate coupon policy which is set out for Jewel employees to follow and even gives examples on the last page.

  5. Jewel does not get reimbursed for the store ones — they count on people buying the beer and make their $ back that way. So I don’t feel right using em. The manufacturer ones, on the other hand…. There’s a $3.00 mfr one for Johnsonville at a lot of Dom’s, apparently, so if you can find those use em instead.

  6. So, even if it is a Jewel coupon they should still honor it? I brought my copy of the coupon policy today and tried again to talk to CS and they would not budge and said that I had to buy the beer unless it was a manf coupon. What gives? I am going to the dreaded Doms tomorrow to see what I can find there.

    • Illinois doesn’t care if it’s a Jewel or a manufacturer coupon, the law is the same for all. The problem with going to the stores on weekends is that most of the personnel are part-time workers. Go during the week when the cs manager is there (not the acting manager) and take up the issue with her/him and let them know that you were told that only mfr coupons will be accepted without liquor purchases.
