Seriously, I was just driving by and decided to run in for a few wine tag items. I’m trying to pick up just a few at a time, instead of waving red flags to the beer mfrs – yooo
hooo, look what I can do! So here we have 4 Jays chips, 4 Doritos, two Craisins and two packs of pub burgers. The Doritos are running me a buck each, ’cause the sale price changed, and I’m putting out $1.50 for each pub burger pack. Total OOP was $7.70 and life is good.

The Dark Side of Couponing
Hi,
I read your page every day, but I am a little confused. What are wine tags ? Are they like the ones on beer that say buy
this pack of beer and get chips free? And in reading the Strack info would that mean I would just get the chips free without buying any beer and just giving the cashier the coupon ? I live in Plainfield so that would be great.
Thanks for your help.
Very good! You guessed right. Wine tags are the term we use for any of the alcohol coupons, be they hang tags, tearpads or peelies. A very few say No Alcohol Purchase Required (NAPR), but most do not. IL does not permit the purchase of alcohol as a condition of getting something else, so up until recently, we were talking free or greatly reduced food, here. Like my pub burgers and fruit purchases. Jewel has decided to pull the plug on this deal (probably under pressure from beer and spirits mfrs) and as of 6/23 they will no longer accept these coupons without alcohol purchases. IL is currently looking into changing the law. So yes, you could go into your local SVT and get chips (or whatevers) for free.
Please note that if you do try to use wine tags at SVT, make sure that the coupon has a double bar code (the regular one and the funny broken in the middle one), not the single one denoting store coupon, as their policy says they don’t accept store coupons from other stores.
Thanks! !!!!
