The Rosie Project: A Novel  MEET DON TILLMAN, a brilliant yet socially challenged professor of genetics, who’s decided it’s time he found a wife. And so, in the orderly, evidence-based manner with which Don approaches all things, he designs the Wife Project to find his perfect partner: a sixteen-page, scientifically valid survey to filter out the drinkers, the smokers, the late arrivers.

Rosie Jarman is all these things. She also is strangely beguiling, fiery, and intelligent. And while Don quickly disqualifies her as a candidate for the Wife Project, as a DNA expert Don is particularly suited to help Rosie on her own quest: identifying her biological father. When an unlikely relationship develops as they collaborate on the Father Project, Don is forced to confront the spontaneous whirlwind that is Rosie—and the realization that, despite your best scientific efforts, you don’t find love, it finds you.

I just finished reading The Rosie Project last night.  Read the first few pages and you’ll be hooked – it’s funny, brilliant and very well-written.  Luckily the author is working on a sequel.

Will the terrifying little effigies Isaac made explain the incidents around the ward, or provide the clue Caffery needs to predict what he’s got planned?

Thursdays in the Park  Jeanie is on the brink of turning sixty, and the man she’s been married to for more than half of her life has suddenly abandoned the marital bed. When Jeanie’s husband George retreats from his conjugal duties, she is deeply hurt and very confused: Has she done something wrong? Is he in love with someone else? Her pained bewilderment turns to anger as he remains unable, or unwilling, to provide answers. The bright spot of Jeanie’s week is Thursday, the day she takes her granddaughter to the park. There, one day, she meets Ray — age-appropriate, kind-hearted, easygoing, and downright sexy. In short, he is everything that George is not. As her relationship with Ray begins to blossom and she begins to think that her life might hold in store a bold second act, she begins to wonder if she has the courage to take a step off the precipice of routine and duty and into the swirling winds of romance.

Everything Beautiful Began After  A “swift and engaging story” (The Wall Street Journal) set among the ruins of Ancient Greece. In the aftermath of an earthquake, Rebecca, George, and Henry contend with a tender love triangle. “A novel you simply must read!” (Andre Dubus III, New York Times bestselling author of The House of Sand and Fog)

Love Begins in Winter  Van Booy’s sentimental second collection deals heavily in the neuroses and personal traumas of his characters. The longish title story follows Brunno Bonnet, an emotionally debilitated cellist with a fondness for stones who encounters Hannah, a bird-obsessed shop owner with a fondness for acorns. In the beautiful The Missing Statues, Max, a young diplomat is reduced to tears at the edge of St. Peter’s Square in Rome as memories of childhood in seedy Las Vegas overwhelm him. In the excellent The Coming and Going of Strangers, a multigenerational story of heroism, tragedy, love and family finds its roots with Walter, a Romany Irish gypsy who falls in love with a Canadian orphan girl. Though Van Booy’s tendency to deliver a late-story surprise becomes predictable, each of these stories has moments of sheer loveliness.
