Kroger/Albertsons merger no go

A federal judge has ruled in favor of federal and state regulators who challenged Kroger’s planned $25 billion acquisition of Albertsons. The Tuesday afternoon decision to grant a preliminary injunction only temporarily blocks the merger – but it may doom the deal for good.

The Federal Trade Commission, joined by attorneys general in Arizona, California, Illinois, Maryland, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Wyoming and the District of Columbia, had sought an injunction to suspend the deal until after a full review could be completed, to determine if the proposed combination would violate antitrust laws and stifle competition.

Citing the plaintiffs’ likelihood of success in proving the deal is anticompetitive, the judge granted the injunction that stops the merger in its tracks for now.

And possibly for good, as Kroger had signaled it would abandon the deal if an injunction were to be granted.  Here’s the Coupons in the News article.

Dollar Tree for cheap bleach

May be an image of medicine and textI go through a lot of bleach – yeah, probably a suspicious amount, now that I think about it 🙂 but all dog toys, rugs, pee pads, etc., have bleach added to keep them healthy and vermin-free.  Hmmm, house humans only get bleach on white towels.  Something odd here.

I remember fondly those days after lockdown, when supplies started returning and Jewel was clearancing out non-inventory bleach for insanely low prices (10¢ a quart for Cloralen); naturally I bought it all.  For some reason, bleach is one of the few products that not only hasn’t come back down to earth in terms of prices, but has actually increased!  Last time Pete’s Fresh Market ran a $1.89 sale was in 2015 and there were coupons!

I’m down very low, so Pita and I head out last night.  FirstBorn yells down the stairs “You’re going out!!? What time is it?”  Five.  “Oh, thought it was about 9.”  Picked up the Saturday freebie at Jewel, grabbed two non-gallons of bleach (121 oz) for roughly $6 and $7 and decided to hit up Dollar Tree.  Had only seen tiny quart bottles there for so long it kind of fell off my radar, but was I in for a surprise!

Picked up a 96 oz lavender scent bottle for $1.25 and tubes of little bleach tablets that you can either drop in the machine or do what I plan, fill up a used bottle with water and dump a bunch of tablets inside (each tube equals a half gallon).  So I can either pay 1.3¢ per ounce for scented or 1.9¢ for an easily-stored item.  Know which way I’m leaning, but we’ll see how it turns out.  I do know I won’t be buying bleach at Jewel until their prices drop, but with the compensation packages paid their CEO, not bloody likely.

Edit: Jewel Freebie: Sparkling Ice+Energy

The one APP I always use is Fetch Rewards and this freebie gave me 800 points per can! Ibotta is great, but often the rebate won’t include Jewel or Dollar Tree and that’s where Fetch Rewards comes into play, ’cause they don’t care where you shop (even online)! Scan the receipt and if there’s an item that’s part of a bonus rebate, you get it automatically plus they have a minimum of 25 points for every scan.  Use by promo code WVAB6 and I’ll earn some initial points (it’s always changing), but nothing thereafter.

The Saturday Sampler this week is an 12 oz can of Sparkling Ice + Energy Drink.  Several varieties shown.  Add by Sunday and redeem by Monday.  Click on the U™ account link and check if you have any other freebies because sometimes rando stuff appears.
