Rapture, Blister, Burn @ Goodman Theatre – Goldstar has tickets

unnamedThought-provoking yet riotously funny, Rapture, Blister, Burn is a comedy by Gina Gionfriddo, whose TV work includes writing for the Emmy-nominated Netflix series House of Cards. It’s an impassioned social critique about Catherine, a famous feminist academic returned home to take care of her elderly mother. There, she encounters an old flame and an “ex” best friend, both of whom seem to be excelling at the kind of conventional life Catherine rejected. But first impressions can be very deceiving. Sparks fly as this production at Chicago’s Goodman Theatre address an age-old question with fresh insight: What do women really want?  Get the answers for less with tickets from Goldstar starting at $24.50 (plus service chargees) to February performances at Goodman Theatre.

3 Joffrey Ballet Premieres on Goldstar – 10 dates!

unnamedThe Joffrey Ballet’s Unique Voices premieres three diverse displays of bodies in motion at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Choreographer Stanton Welch’s abstract Maninyas is a powerful, exotic and passionate ballet that explores the sometimes frightening process of revealing oneself, layer by layer, in a relationship. James Kudelka’s The Man in Black pays tribute to Johnny Cash. Six of the country legend’s later songs are given visual resonance in a suite of country & western-style dance riffs, all performed in cowboy boots. Rounding out the Unique Voices program is Alexander Ekman’s Tulle, which features the full Joffrey company, voice-over commentary and three large onstage LED screens. Part homage and part tongue-in-cheek critique, this “ballet about ballet” displays Ekman’s fresh wit and serious craft.  Choose from ten performance dates in February, starting at $41.50 (plus service charge).

In The Heat of the Night comp tickets (River Forest)

unnamedBased on the incendiary novel that spawned an Oscar-winning film of the same name, In the Heat of the Night is a detective thriller set during the Civil Rights Movement. L.A. Theatre Works’ riveting stage adaptation brings this drama to a new audience, channeling the year 1965, when the country was fraught with sit-ins, tear gas, marches and assassinations. Almost half a century later, as our nation continues to fight the plague of prejudice, the time is right to revisit this powerful story that helped shape an entire generation.  Goldstar has comp tickets ($7 service fee) to the February 13 7:30 performance at Lund Hall in River Forest – full price tickets are $26.  I’ve attended shows here before – it’s beautiful and very easy to get to, since it’s right off Harlem.

Comp tickets to The Importance of Being Earnest

unnamedThough they’re all about dodging social obligations or commitment of any kind, two wily young bachelors each attempt to come across as very earnest — while masquerading as guys named Ernest — as they set out to win their well-dowried ladies’ hearts. Of course, their misguided plan goes hilariously awry. Oscar Wilde’s enduring 1895 satire is a comically sly romp through Victorian society, filled with one-liners and double entendres that still pack a mighty punch today. Revived numerous times on Broadway — most recently in 2011 — The Importance of Being Earnest was also adapted into a 2002 film starring Oscar winners Reese Witherspoon and Colin Firth. Go Wilde with ShawChicago Theater Company’s concert reading of Earnest at Chicago’s Ruth Page Center for the Arts.  Three February concert readings are COMP ($8 service charge), while the other dates – through March – start at $7 – full price is $30.
