The Joffrey Ballet’s Unique Voices premieres three diverse displays of bodies in motion at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre. Choreographer Stanton Welch’s abstract Maninyas is a powerful, exotic and passionate ballet that explores the sometimes frightening process of revealing oneself, layer by layer, in a relationship. James Kudelka’s The Man in Black pays tribute to Johnny Cash. Six of the country legend’s later songs are given visual resonance in a suite of country & western-style dance riffs, all performed in cowboy boots. Rounding out the Unique Voices program is Alexander Ekman’s Tulle, which features the full Joffrey company, voice-over commentary and three large onstage LED screens. Part homage and part tongue-in-cheek critique, this “ballet about ballet” displays Ekman’s fresh wit and serious craft. Choose from ten performance dates in February, starting at $41.50 (plus service charge).
