Bad news on the Wags Pur Absorb front – Update

Okay, here’s the latest update on the Pur situation/substitution.  Wags is giving us a choice of three items:  Bifera 30 ct. (normally $19.99), Walgreens Ferrous Sulfate 65 mg Iron Supplement Tablets 260 ct (normally $13.99) or Walgreens Ferrous Sulfate Tablets 100 ct (normally $8.99).  Obviously, we’d all pick the Bifera but Lisle only has two of these in stock.  They’re contacting other distributors to see if this product is available (’cause we’d like to get it in THIS WEEK) and what their cost would be.  Funny how the name brands aren’t in stock but they have lots of the Wags stuff, huh?  Will update once again with any news.

Yes, yes, we all know about the recall of the Pur Absorb iron supplement, which is going to impact our deals this week.  And it’s a trickle-down effect, since we won’t be running the same scenario.

The problem is that this is not a total recall but only one lot – unfortunately, it’s the one lot that every damned store in the Chicagoland area checked so far is carrying (this is one big-ass lot, people!).  Emails have been sent out to see what, if any, substitution can be made with a similar product (I’m pushing for the 60 ct Slow FE tablets), but until we get more info, our hands are tied.  It’s also important that stores have sufficient quantity of that substituted item (which would probably work with the Slow FE).

I’ll post immediately upon learning anything at all about this deal.  ’cause the goddess is pissed at wags lately.

  1. Will all the Walgreen stores subsitute for us or only certain ones? This is an item I need on a regular basis so I was planning on stocking up. I normally take the Slow FE tablets but started using the Pur ones when CVS offered them a few months ago.

    • Decision is strictly corporate, which means, like the Full Fast substitution, the products chosen will generate the same RR at ALL stores automatically (except I don’t know if the $8.99 Wags brand product will generate a $10 RR, but that would be cool!).

    • As I posted, I have found NOTHING about a recall on either the manufacturer’s website or the FDA site for both voluntary and involuntary recalls of all foods, drugs, biological devices, etc. – NOTHING! I’ve spoken with other people about this and they’ve been unable to find any recall news. AND CVS is still selling this product (which admittedly could be a different lot number) so my guess is that Wags, once again, could not get the product into their warehouse even though they have a six-month lead time and are using this excuse to clear out their Wags brands. but then, I’m a cynic like that. However, you could take the two boxes to Walgreens and demand your money back (if these are the lot numbers I posted). The least you could get would be a gift card for the full price (they can’t say you just bought them on sale ’cause you would counter – you’re selling recalled products now?)

      • I just received this email from Pur Absorb…:

        Hi Madison,

Thank you for your interest in pur-Absorb and I apologize in advance for your concern.
Spatone pur-Absorb Iron Supplement has not been recalled. Due to Iron oxidation and the potential resulting product discoloration, Nelsons has taken corrective action on lot numbers with the suffix: 428, 429, 430, 431, 432, 436, 437, 438 and 439. This is not something that we have experienced previously with our product, and there is no health hazard if consumed. This situation is limited to a few batches shipped by Nelsons between December 2011 and early January 2012 and has been corrected for all subsequent batches.

Nelsons will gladly replace the product or give you a full refund. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused. Feel free to contact us at 800-319-9151 if you have further questions or concerns.

        Just throwing this out there…

  2. I am not sure about this whole thing. I went to the Wags on Lambert in Glen Ellyn and they product is still on the shelf (lot 432). I asked the manager about the recall and he knew nothing about it. He scanned a box and said if the product scanned at the register then he could sell it. He did not see any information on the recall at all. He said that their internal message system only said that they would not be receiving anymore Pur-Absorb but that was it. This AM . . . I just got off the phone with Mr. Hutchinson at Steeple Run Wags and he said he can’t sell the product but there were 3 possible substitutions: 2 Wags products and the Bifera. There is a 1,000 units of one of the Walgreens items but he was not sure if he could get it in by Saturday. Goddess. . . some advice here. Thanks.

    • My guess is that the stores that have stock on the shelves are being run by mgmt too lazy to read their emails (and no, I’m not kidding ’cause I’ve seen this before). Since you’re not going to be able to find the Bifera, I’d go with the MM on the $8.99 Wags product: You pay $8.99 and get a $10 RR (will say purabsorb). You can then flip back and forth with Blink/St. Joseph’s aspirin and a filler (for $10) on one transaction and the Blink RR and a buck for the Wags $8.99 iron. Rinse and repeat. You will be stockpiling the St. Joseph $2 RRs, since you can’t use them in this deal.

  3. I’m still waiting on a call back from “Ashley” at Wag corporate….head of medicinals, pills, and vitamins or something like that. I have a feeling Hell will freeze over before I get a return phone call. I guess that I just want them to OWN the fact that they are playing games with advertising product, and “recalling” it when the planets align for us couponers!
