In 2006, 16-year-old Sam Spitz of Chicago was sickened by chicken contaminated with antibiotic-resistant campylobacter. He battled the pathogen for months, ultimately losing 30 pounds before making a full recovery. The experience inspired him and his family to become passionate advocates for a safer, more sustainable food system that is not reliant an antibiotic overuse. The Spitzes’ journey is documented in a new film, “Food Patriots,” which shows the family’s often-hilarious and poignant quest to raise food in their back yard while meeting other sustainable-food activists along the way.
Click here to watch the trailer for “Food Patriots” and RSVP for the free online premiere next Wednesday, Feb. 26, at 7 p.m. CST/8 p.m. EST. I just watched the trailer and I’m signing up so I can watch the entire show: it’s funny and scary and I want that Fresh Produce Bus driving down my streets!
Right after the screening, we will join Sam, his parents, Jennifer and Jeff, and other food and health advocates for a Twitter chat (#FoodPatsChat) about how you can become a Food Patriot and help create a more sustainable food system.
