There is never a reason to pay full price at Kohls – actually, I don’t think it’s even possible. The next big round of clearance deals starts tomorrow, July 5. If you wait until the 7th, though, you can take an additional 15% off when you use promo code EXTRA 15AF. Example? The shoes at left were originally $49.99, marked down to $9.99. If you wait until July 13th, you can take 15 or 20% off when you use your Kohl’s charge card AND you earn $10 in Kohl’s Cash for every $50 you spend.
What I like about Kohls is that you can combine their promotions in one transaction (like Kohls Cash stacked with $/$$ coupons), which can give you some mighty cheap “stuff.”
What I don’t like about Kohl’s is that like you said, you never pay full price. Why is that a problem? Well, because their list price is bogus; you never know how much off it really is. For instance, when it shows a sheet set for $50 that’s normally $100, you assume 1. it’s sold at Kohl’s for $100 at times, or at least 2. it’s sold elsewhere for $100. But no, you’re sadly not getting that sheet set for 50% off, or anywhere close to it. Go online and look that item up, and you’ll find it at many other stores for the price Kohl’s is selling it “on sale”, or a little bit more.
Now don’t get me wrong, they do have awesome sales, but that’s my point, is you have no idea what is really a good sale, and what isn’t, without looking up the item online and seeing what it really goes for. I know this is common on infomercials to jack up the MSRP, but in stores it’s not, just Kohl’s and JCPenny.
and Jewel and Dominicks and…you get the point. Justin, the whole point of shopping the way we do is to be informed consumers. You’re just starting to pay attention to the way in which the marketing companies attempt to sway our emotions first one way and then another. But if you have a “bullshit price” meter in your gut, then you’ll know what is a good price (for you) and what it bullshit.
Ya, but I’m just saying that you don’t see Jewel saying that their steaks are $20/lb but are “on sale” for $12/lb. I mean what store can you think of that has huge tags/signs saying stuff is 30% off all over the place, when in reality it’s just normal price? Not many. And the ones that do do this don’t quite slap your intelligence in the face like Kohl’s and JCPenny does with their “sales”.
And like I said before, they really do have good sales, but you have to research it or really think about it. I’m overreacting I know, but it just gets to me when I see big sale signs all over a store when in fact those are just normal prices.
Jewel does this all the time, as a matter of fact, with their 2fer sales where they jack up the “usual” price. Face it, ALL stores pull this; you only realized it with Kohl’s. But at least you are now aware and can catch them at their games. So bravo, Justin, you’re ten steps ahead of the pack now.
