The pulsing urban environment has an energy unlike any other, and living within it helps shape who we are and our perspective on the world. Chicago Sinfonietta celebrates that energy with a concert program that explores the history and mythology of the metropolis. The newly commissioned ChiScape memorializes four of the world’s most significant architectural structures found right here in Chicago. Each building is celebrated with its own movement by a different rising young composer, selected by noted American composer Jennifer Higdon to participate in this collaborative work. The orchestra then travels from Chicago to New York City and even Superman’s hometown to celebrate city life: noted American composer Jennifer Higdon’s City Scape finds tranquility within the heart of New York, while Michael Daugherty’s G RAMMY-winningMetropolis Symphony was inspired by the fictional setting and characters of the Superman comics. Finally, Duke Ellington’s Harlem brings the swagger of the jazz life to an orchestral setting in his celebration of NYC’s center of black culture. The pulsing urban environment has an energy unlike any other, and living within it helps shape who we are and our perspective on the world.
