Based on one suggestion each night from the audience at Chicago’s Den Theatre 2A, creator, director and performer Ryan Williams will improvise an entire kung fu movie from start to finish — one that not only includes fast-paced action sequences and honor until death, but also realistic sound effects. Few theatrical debuts have more loudly trumpeted a writer’s genius than The Glass Menagerie, Tennessee Williams’ first successful play. Tom Wingfield is a poet struggling with a mind-numbing job and a smothering home life. His overbearing mother, a former Southern belle, constantly pushes her son to bring home “gentleman callers” for his painfully shy sister. When Tom finally produces a male visitor, the guest’s presence sends shockwaves through the family — and the fragile fantasy world they’ve built is irreparably cracked. Summer is nearing full throttle, and with sunshine and school breaks comes travel. Last 4th of July, it was projected that 41 million people would travel, and the number grows annually. Direct from Italy, Cirque Italia brings all the artistic beauty and incredible strength, acrobatic and aerial feats of a traditional European-style circus to their own big top in Cicero for an aquatic spectacular. Hundreds of performers dressed in Elizabethan costumes create a magical world of music and excitement, with games, rides and 20 stages of entertainment options ranging from knife throwers to improv troupes. More than 150 artisans will also be exhibiting and selling their original hand-crafted items, including hand-blown glass creations, pottery, authentic clothing and weaponry. All the frolicking and cavorting can leave one in need of refreshment, though fear not — there are dozens of food and drink options available for purchase, including the signature giant turkey leg and ice-cold sassafras.
