coupon industry to mfrs – put out more!

On the heels of recent reports that coupon use is likely to rise the longer the economy suffers, comes this reality check – coupon use can go up only so far, until there are more coupons available to use.

So coupon industry leaders are urging manufacturers: if you want people to buy your brands in these troubled times – don’t forget to offer some coupons. Coupons in the News article here.

Paper coupons have gotten a bit of a black eye during the coronavirus pandemic. Year after year, coupons have gotten worse as the economy has gotten better. It seemed an economic downturn might be the only thing that could give couponing a much-needed boost.

TerraCycle – for the other recycling

PITA found this one.  You know all the plastic bags of dog food and pasta pouches and lots of other stuff that don’t go in regular recycling?  It was killing her to throw them in the garbage (upset me ’cause recycling is free and garbage you pay) until she read they were TerraCycle participants.  You set up a free account and then choose whatever product packaging you want to send in (large selection) and print out the Free UPS label.  You also earn points, but that’s not the main goal for us, frankly.  We printed out two labels (each product in a separate bag or box) and dropped them off at UPS and got our tracking receipt.  Easy-peasy!

Who will process paper coupons now?

Most stores have continued to accept coupons as normal during the coronavirus pandemic. But what happens when there’s no one to sort through those coupons and reimburse retailers for accepting them? Coupons in the New article here.

That’s what the industry is grappling with right now, after one of the two leading coupon clearinghouses has been forced to close their facilities where the unglamorous but necessary work of sorting and processing paper coupons is done.

NCH Marketing Services collects redeemed coupons from retailers including Walmart, Target, Walgreens, Publix and others, and ships them all to a processing plant in Mexico, just over the border from El Paso, Texas. There, through a combination of automated systems and physical labor, millions of coupons are sorted by manufacturer, their values are added up, the manufacturers are billed and the retailers are reimbursed.
