Celebrate National Cheeseburger Day

McDonald's is giving cheeseburgers away for 50 cents and Burger King has a free cheeseburger offer on National Cheeseburger Day.

These days, you’d be hard-pressed to find anything at the store for under a dollar. But on Monday, in honor of National Cheeseburger Day, McDonald’s customers will be able to get a double cheeseburger for just 50 cents, only 45 cents more than what the chain’s original hamburger cost in 1948.

Only customers who use the McDonald’s app will be able to access the deal, and it’s limited to one burger per person. According to the company’s official website, a McDonald’s cheeseburger typically can cost as low as $1 and as high as $2.79. Here’s the short article on CNN.

Birks: in your closet & portfolio

German sandal maker and in-again fashion icon Birkenstock has filed for an initial public offering, according to a filing late Tuesday.

The filing doesn’t list the number of shares the maker intends to sell or a price range yet. Filing fees were also left blank. The company plans to list its shares on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker symbol BIRK.

According to reports in July, private-equity firm L Catterton, backed by LVMH MC, -0.39%, was mulling over its options for Birkenstock, including an initial public offering that would value the sandal maker at more than $6 billion.  Here’s the Marketwatch article.

2nd Annual Nat’l Cinema Day = $4 tkts

Missed out on the summer movies? Or want to rewatch your favorite one? You’re in luck because it’s National Cinema Day this Sunday, Aug. 27, and most theaters across the country are offering tickets for only $4.

“Building on the unprecedented success of last year’s inaugural National Cinema Day, the Cinema Foundation is calling on film fans across the country to gather for a national day to celebrate the magic of the movies on the big screen,” said the National Cinema Foundation in a statement.

“The second annual National Cinema Day celebrates the power of movies to bring us all together, and discounted admissions for all movies at participating U.S. theaters in all formats (including Premium Large Format screens) will be no more than $4.”

Approximately 30,000 screens across 3,000 locations will be participating. AMC is offering ticket/popcorn combos for $5; B&B Theatres is adding 50% off all sizes of popcorn.  Here’s the USA Today article.

Last Day to File for Facebook Claim

If you used Facebook at any time during the past 16 years (bwahaha), you can file a claim to receive a portion of the $725 million settlement.  How much depends, obviously, on how many claims are filed – we know the lawyers will get their cash regardless.  New York Times says amounts will be small, with larger amounts awarded to those on Facebook the longest.

Go to the claim website to fill out your claim, or else print out the claim and mail it to this address: Facebook Consumer Privacy User Profile Litigation, c/o Settlement Administrator, 1650 Arch Street, Suite 2210, Philadelphia, PA 19103.

The claim asks for basic information:

Your name
Your address
Your email
Your phone number
If you resided in the U.S. between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022
If you were a Facebook user between May 24, 2007, and December 22, 2022
If you deleted your account in that period, the date range when you were a Facebook user
Your Facebook user name
The payment service you prefer, such as PayPal, Venmo or a prepaid Mastercard

8/23 Amazon Fresh ad – free burgers

Here’s the Amazon Fresh ad for 8/23 – no extra coupon discounts for anyone, but they’re offering a free 4pk of burgers (16 oz, 80/20) when you spend $50 or more. Avocados are once again 5/$5 and look good.  Prepared single meals are 2/$12, lots of extra discounts on products if you have Prime.

Whoa, Baby, It’s Muggy Outside

Anyone who knows me knows how much I detest air conditioning – really, really, really, dislike it.  My 2015 LEAF (go, you trailblazer!) only had AC on less than five times in all these years and I doubt the house AC goes on for 10 all summer.  Obviously this summer has been a hot mess – literally – so between heat & wildfire smoke, it’s been painful for me to hit that dial.  Using the attic fan at night keeps it so cold that FirstBorn complains and keeps his door closed.  It does help that I’m surrounded by prairie and trees instead of concrete and asphalt.

ALDI entering full-size grocery market?

ALDI is known for its small-format stores with a small selection and small price tags. But it’s just made a very big purchase that will expand its presence and influence in the U.S. grocery market in a very big way.

ALDI announced this morning its planned purchase of the Florida-based Winn-Dixie and Harveys grocery chains from owner Southeastern Grocers. While the transaction will only directly impact shoppers and employees of the approximately 400 store locations across Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi, the move to purchase full-scale supermarkets firmly positions ALDI as a major player – and no longer just a niche discounter – in the grocery industry. Here’s the full article from Coupons in the News.

Personally, I think this is a huge misstep on ALDI’s part – look how well Sears did with their Lands End purchase.  Actually, there is a ton of M&A deals that appear to be pie in the sky marketing dreams.  that turn into nightmares 🙂
