All the news that fits – man steals 42,000 lbs of Muenster cheese

Here’s an interesting tidbit (pun intended) I got from MUM last week – she seems to trade sleep for odd news stories.  I think the comments are almost funnier than the story.

Just months after after a crooked Canadian cop was busted for cheese smuggling, an Illinois man was arrested for allegedly stealing 21 tons of Muenster from a Wisconsin cheese company. The man, Veniamin Balika, 34, then did the reasonable thing and attempted to sell the 42,000 pounds of cheese at a rest stop off the New Jersey turnpike.

all the news that fits: Double your cruise time without paying more

Looking for a way to stretch that one-week vacation into two or even more?  Why not book a Carnival cruise?

Remember how in February, an engine fire crippled the Triumph, turning what was supposed to be a four-day cruise into an eight-day public relations nightmare for Carnival?  They do, ’cause they were hit with a class action lawsuit!  CNN covered the story of the ship, which floated for five days in the Gulf of Mexico without power or working toilets, as an breaking-news event, taking live calls from passengers and calling the ship a “floating petri dish.”  The Triumph had more than 4,200 people on board, including crew and passengers.

Well, it’s déjà vu all over again!  The AP reports that another of Carnival’s ships is reporting equipment problems and a U.S. Coast Guard spokeswoman in Miami said today that Carnival Dream’s captain “notified the agency of possible trouble with the ship’s propulsion system.”  And though the ship is docked, no one has been allowed to leave!  Swell times for all.  Read the CNN full story here.

Multiple passengers aboard the Carnival Dream, docked in Philipsburg, St. Maarten, contacted news outlets complaining of power outages, overflowing toilets and limited communication from cruise officials.

“There’s human waste all over the floor in some of the bathrooms,” Gregg Stark told CNN late Wednesday. “The elevators have not been working. They’ve been turning them on and off, on and off.”

The Dream has a capacity of 3,646 passengers and 1,367 crew members.  It left Port Canaveral in Florida on Saturday.

Bumble Bee expands tuna recall

Loose seals or seams could result in product contamination by spoilage organisms or pathogens and lead to illness if consumed. There have been no reports to date of any illness associated with these products.

Bumble Bee initially announced the voluntary recall on Wednesday, March 6 after identifying an issue on a manufacturing line, which has been corrected. The company’s final assessment of all products affected with the recall include the following products with “best by” and code dates (click to see entire chart):

I’m lucky so far because I only bought EE chunk light; my Bumble Bee was all solid white albacore tuna in both oil and water…which will probably be their next recall…

Voluntary recall of Bumble Bee tuna

Ouch!  Normally the reasons they issue voluntary recalls have nothing to do with me – this one hits closer to home:  This recall is due to loose seals.  And since I know many of you bought Bumble Bee tuna with the Fiber Choice promotion overage, I’m putting this out there.  If you bought a significant amount of chunk light or albacore tuna, take the time to check your codes, please.

All the news that fits…Walmart-style

Was just about to drive over to the SuperWalmart for *cough* a few *cough* of the free burritos, when the daily Huffington Post hit my inbox.  Funny, but I never considered a handgun as a couponing accessory…

Mary Frances Alday Accused Of Waving Handgun Around Walmart When Employees Wouldn’t Honor Dollar-off Coupon

Some people will do anything to save a buck — even wave a gun at a Walmart employee.

Officials in Crawfordville, Fla., say when Mary Frances Alday, 61, was told she couldn’t use an Internet coupon at Walmart, she got angry. Real angry.

She allegedly called the manager who denied the dollar-off coupon “a bitch,” and then intentionally struck her with a shopping cart, according to The Smoking Gun.

Alday was escorted out of Walmart, but she went to her car, grabbed a loaded Smith & Wesson .38 Special and came back in the store and threatened employees with it, WTXL-TV reported.  Read the entire (short) article here.

Supervalu changes mgmt B4 3/18 sale

A very short Reuters clip in today’s Trib on the Jewel sale.  The other stores?  Who cares.  But interestingly enough, if they sold for 3.3 billion, of which 3.2 billion was debt, that means I could have probably picked up a few Jewel stores for clipped insert coupons and IPs, right?  And my first order of business would have been to fire those corporate bums.

Supervalu Inc. on Monday named a new president for its Save-A-Lot discount chain and announced other management changes as the supermarket operator and food distributor gets ready to close a deal that will make it a leaner company.

Supervalu said it should close the deal to sell five of its supermarket chains to an investor group led by Cerberus Capital Management LP during the week of March 18. It had announced the $3.3 billion transaction, which includes the assumption of $3.2 billion in debt, in January.  Read the rest here.
