For the 19th year in a row, Dance Chicago pulls out all the stops to spotlight the best companies and choreographers in the Windy City, with styles ranging from contemporary and ballet to jazz, tap, hip-hop and beyond. Called “gritty” and “unpredictable” by the Chicago Tribune, this acclaimed festival boasts more than 3000 talented artists who’ll be performing approximately 200 new works.  Main stage showcases include the Dance Slam competition, Future Stars, Streets Urban Movement and a collection of pieces by up-and-coming choreographers. The black-box theater will host one-man shows, Tap Battles and more.

The critically acclaimed RNDC has a reputation for presenting dynamic works that combine athleticism and artistic perspective with a bold, theatrical flair. When Carmen is arrested for causing a riot at work, she seduces Jose — and he’s sent to prison for letting her escape. Things get even more heated when the famous boxer Escamillo falls for Carmen and he follows her and Jose when they flee to Las Vegas.  Watch as the drama unfolds for this fiery love triangle.  Tickets are limited to weekend performances on November 22, 23 and 24th.

It’s a Wonderful Life radio play – tickets start at $10

wonderful1If you’ve never attended a radio performance, you really, really need to get tickets to one this holiday season – it’s something the entire family can enjoy.  PITA and I saw this radio show last year (@ Wheaton Drama) and have tickets again this year – yes, it’s that much fun!  Our first exposure to radio shows was in NYC for The War of the Worlds.  Even knowing it was a play didn’t stop your heart from beating faster.

American Blues Theater presents a live radio-style performance of Frank Capra’s holiday masterpiece It’s a Wonderful Life on stage at Greenhouse Theater Center. This has been a holiday tradition in Chicago since 2004, and this year’s performance once again features the original director and ensemble that have warmed hearts for many holiday seasons. Complete with live sound effects, an original score and a cast of eight wonderful actors who bring the typical small town of Bedford Falls to life on stage, It’s a Wonderful Life: Live in Chicago! recreates a 1940s-era radio broadcast of the heartwarming tale of troubled George Bailey’s Christmas Eve journey through his life history. The production includes holiday carols, live commercials from actual local sponsors, telegrams from the audience read on stage and a “Soldier Spotlight,” which honors one servic eman or servicewoman during each performance. Blacula: Young, Black & Undead comp tickets

blacula-101513-tempChicago’s award-winning Pegasus Players have put together a chilling and thrilling production featuring a vampire tragicomedy — complete with a funky musical soundtrack. Reginald Edmund’s Blacula: Young Black & Undead takes its cues from the blaxploitation films of the ’70s and ancient vampire legends. Franklin Park’s life is in shambles after losing his girl to an African Prince of Darkness. In an attempt to win her back — and possibly save the world — Park recruits a pair of bizarre vampire-slayers. This stage adaptation comes out just in time for the 40th anniversary of the cult film Blacula.  Comp tickets are for performance dates into December.

Haunting Julia: service fee-only tickets to Chicago premiere

Goldstar has comp tickets ($7.50 service fee) through December for Haunting Julia.  Athenaeum Theatre’s Alan Ayckbourn season concludes with the Chicago premiere of the renowned British playwright’s supernatural drama Haunting Julia. Twelve years after his daughter Julia’s suicide, grief-stricken father Joe meets with a psychic and Julia’s former boyfriend — the last person to see her alive — in an attempt to discover what really happened. Joe reveals that he believes Julia’s trying to contact him from beyond the grave, and among these three men the true story of Julia’s life and death is gradually revealed. Former Shattered Globe artistic director and Jeff Award-winning artist Kevin Hagan directs this thrilling conclusion to the Ayckbourn season.
