It’s a Wonderful Life radio play discount tickets on Goldstar

unnamedAmerican Blues Theater presents a live radio-style performance of Frank Capra’s holiday masterpiece on stage at Greenhouse Theater Center and Goldstar has discount tickets to performances throughout December (some are already sold out!). This has been a holiday tradition in Chicago since 2002, and this year’s performance once again features the original director and ensemble that have warmed hearts for many holiday seasons. Complete with live sound effects, an original score and a cast of eight wonderful actors who bring the typical small town of Bedford Falls to life , It’s a Wonderful Life: Live in Chicago! recreates a ’40s-era radio broadcast of the heartwarming tale of troubled George Bailey’s Christmas Eve journey through his life history. The production includes holiday carols, live commercials from actual local sponsors, telegrams from the audience read onstage and a “Soldier Spotlight,” which honors one serviceman or servicewoman during each performance. After the show, the entire audience is invited to join the cast and crew for milk and cookies.

We’ve seen this performed as a radio play at Wheaton Drama for the past few years and it’s always a kick (although I have to admit…i really can’t stand the sickeningly-sweet movie).

Watch as this season’s team — including Flight Time and Big Easy who also competed together on The Amazing Race — make trick shots, have some fun and (hopefully) beat their rivals, the Washington Generals, the last team to beat the Globetrotters in 1971. After a five-year hiatus, the Generals are back with a new coach — a former member of that 1971 team — and they’re more determined than ever to win.

Dee Snider’s Rock & Roll Christmas Tale

unnamedWhat happens when the frontman for legendary ’80s hair metal band Twisted Sister writes and stars in his own holiday musical? Find out this season at Dee Snider’s Rock & Roll Christmas Tale, a head-banging spin on the classic Christmas story that’s fun for the whole family. The play follows a heavy metal bar band Däisy Cütter, who are looking to make it big even though the ’80s are long over. In mythic rock tradition, the four guys sell their souls to the devil in exchange for success beyond their wildest dreams, but every time they try to seal the infernal pact, their metal anthems turn into warm-hearted carols, and soon the rockers are forced to realize their dreams of stardom are no match for the Christmas spirit. Snider, who also starred in a run of the Broadway hit Rock of Ages, authored and performs in this new stage work, which promises to be as warm-hearted and funny as it is rockin’.  TIckets on Goldstar for performances through the month of December start at $49.  This is the same theater where PITA and DH saw Evil Dead:  The Musical.  There was even reduced parking!

Comp tickets to Travel & Adventure Show (January)

With advice on top local, national and international destinations, show-only specials and giveaways, hands-on adventure activities (scuba diving, animal encounters, indoor rock climbing and Segway riding), exotic culinary demonstrations, and live cultural performances, attending the Travel & Adventure Show almost feels like its own little getaway.

I know I’d be psyched about spending a January day drooling over warm climes and possible giveaways thereto…

I Love Lucy: Live on Stage (additional dates on Goldstar)

unnamedWitness the classic antics of America’s favorite ditzy redhead and her Cuban crooner hubby as the beloved ’50s sitcom I Love Lucy is transformed into a live stage show with this Goldster offering.  Step back in time onto the Desilu soundstage, where a charming host will give you a behind-the-scenes look at the latest hi-fi technology that makes this new thing called “television” possible. Then, the show starts, and Lucy, Ricky, Fred and Ethel are up to their hilarious misadventures in the familiar cozy surroundings of their New York apartment building and the famed Tropicana Nightclub, where The Ricky Ricardo Orchestra delights with “Babalu” and other Cuban dance numbers. In between scenes, the Crystaltone Singers perform live advertising jingles from the show’s newest sponsors (Brylcreem, anyone?) in perfect ’50s-style harmony. This is your chance to be a member of the studio audience at the taping of two classic I Love Lucy episodes — “The Benefit” (Lucy agrees to get Ricky to perform in a benefit for her women’s club, as long as she’s the star of the show) and “Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined” (drops from the eye doctor make Lucy’s vision blurry just as she’s about to have a jitterbug audition for a movie role).  Tickets to the December 9, 10 & 11 7:30 performances are $40 through Goldstar (plus $8.50 in service charges).  These are orchestra, front mezzanine and dress circle tickets.
