Broadway musical favorite The King and I comes to the Civic Opera House in a spectacular production from Lyric Opera of Chicago. One of Rodgers and Hammerstein’s most beloved and enduring creations, this multi-award-winning show was most recently the recipient of four Tony Awards, including Best Revival of a Musical. Set in 19th-century Bangkok and inspired by a true story, the show follows Anna, a British widow hired to tutor the King’s many children. Although their very different backgrounds initially result in conflict, the sparks set off by their culture clash lead to greater understanding and respect between the two. Hazel Burke has been the take-charge, no-nonsense maid for the Baxter family for many years. But the social changes of the 1960s have turned life in this once idyllic suburban home upside-down — housewife Mrs. Baxter is contemplating joining the workforce, which causes no end of consternation for the more traditional Mr. Baxter. In this production at Chicago’s Drury Lane Theatre, the unflappable Hazel must save a marriage, debone a turkey, lead a conga line and uncover a matter of national security — all in a day’s work!  I used to watch these old reruns…where was that, Nick at Nite?
