unnamed

There just aren’t enough superlatives in the universe to describe the iconic entertainer simply known as “Barbra,” but the L.A. Times comes close, remarking during her last tour that she “isn’t just a star — she’s a world view, a style of being, an entire cosmology, with the highest possible thread-count sheets.” And now she’s bringing The Music … The Mem’ries … The Magic! to Chicago’s United Center. The best-selling female recording artist in history and the only artist to chart a No.1 album in six different decades, Streisand’s upcoming tour will feature hits from her unparalleled career, as well as cuts from her forthcoming CD, which features duets of Broadway favorites with some of today’s top film stars. Streisand received the highest civilian honor our nation bestows, the Presidential Medal of Freedom, in 2015, to go along with her Kennedy Center Honor, Emmys, Grammys, Oscars, Tony and Peabodys. If you’ve never caught this legend live in concert, now’s your chance to experience the out-of-this-world wonder that is … simply Streisand. Each ticket you purchase includes a CD of Barbra’s new album Encore: Movie Partners Sing Broadway, to be released on August 26.  Tickets to her August 9 performance at The United Centre are now available on Goldstar.

Batshit crazy? No BATSU! Chicago

unnamed (1)Eating a bowl of wasabi, wrestling a sumo champion or filling your underwear with ice… You’ve seen examples of bizarre and over-the-top Japanese television and their American counterparts like Wipeout, now see BATSU! Chicago live on stage with comedy troupe Face Off Unlimited. Batsu is Japanese for “penalty game” and you can expect these four warrior-comedians get shocked and splattered as they compete in the lounge theater at Kamehachi. Chicago’s original sushi bar, Kamehachi is in the heart of old town and offers a full bar and menu.  Get tickets starting at $10 on Goldstar.  I admit I do not see the point of any of these Japanese shows – – must be a guy thing.

A smash hit across the pond, Thrones! The Musical — A Parody of Game of Thrones makes its way from the UK (where it sold out its entire run at the 2015 Edinburgh Fringe Festival and its subsequent performances at London’s Leicester Square Theatre) to the Apollo Theater Chicago. This must-see musical creation, updated to include the sixth season of the HBO show, asks all the important questions that plague the diehard fans of Game of Thrones. Questions like: Will Tyrion’s accent ever improve? Will Jon Snow ever get a clue? How red can one Red Wedding really get? Is Gandalf still alive? OK … so they may have a few of the details wrong, but the show’s hilarious songs are as sure to slay you as if you were one of the infinitely unlucky characters on Game of Thrones. Tickets start at COMP for 7/21 or otherwise pay $14.50 for performance dates through August 21st.
