UB40 at Ravinia – tickets on Goldstar

unnamed (4)

Buying instruments with cash netted from a bar fight, UB40 couldn’t have had a more humble start (especially since, once they got the instruments, the band still didn’t know how to play them). Nevertheless these working-class guys from the West Midlands of Britain became one of the most adventurous — and commercially successful — reggae bands of all time. Featuring original band members Ali Campbell, Astro and Mickey Virtue, the Grammy-nominated group brings their signature high-energy, funky sound to the Ravina Pavilion in Highland Park for the Ravina Festival. With a smooth-yet-rootsy blend of reggae and pop, UB40 has sold more than 70 million albums and charted dozens of global hits, including “Red Red Wine” and “Can’t Help Falling in Love.”  Tickets to their September 2nd performance are $30-35 on Goldstar.

Noble, athletic and supremely trained, these horses and talented riders dance in precise, synchronized movements, demonstrating an unparalleled harmony between man and animal. An endangered breed with less than 8,500 horses worldwide, the fascinating story of how the Lipizzans made their way from Austria to Illinois during the Nazi occupation is just a starting point to this incredible show. Brian Wilson performs Pet Sounds!

From his early songs about cars and surfing to the 1966 masterpiece LP Pet Sounds and beyond, Wilson’s “teenage symphonies to God” broke new ground in rock music, combining elaborate vocal harmonies with unconventional instrumentation. He’s been productive in recent years, reuniting with The Beach Boys for a 50th anniversary tour and releasing his 11th solo studio album, 2015’s No Pier Pressure. This concert also features special guests Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin.
